Uzbekistan has a single carmaker that monopolizes the whole market

Uzbekistan is like Ukraine and Kazakhstan, former republics of the Soviet Union. Inhabited by 27 million people, almost two times more than Kazakhstan (16 million), but almost two times less than Ukraine (46 million), Uzbekistan has still a very low motorization rate. However, the Uzbek market has gradually increased from 118 000 units in 2011 to 158 000 in 2013. Most new vehicles sold in this market are locally produced by a single carmaker: GM Uzbekistan a joint venture established in Asaka in 1996 between the U.S. carmaker General Motors (25%) and an Uzbek assembler called Uzbek OJSC UzAvtoSanoat (75%). The manufacturer sells vehicles (segments A, B and C) under the Daewoo brand, except for the Cobalt (segment C) launched in 2012 and sold under the Chevrolet brand.

GM Uzbekistan has always produced models under the Daewoo brand (now GM Korea): Nexia, Matiz, Damas, Spark, Lacetti, Captiva, Epica, Malibu. At first they were assembled from spare parts imported from Korea. These Models are now produced entirely on site, except for the Captiva, Epica and Malibu, supplied in smaller quantities.

GM Uzbekistan produced 246 641 vehicles in 2013 (against 236 201 in 2012), including 157 784 sold locally, the rest is exported, mainly to Russia. Uzbekistan has a growing automobile production (multiplied by 2.5 to 8 years) and continuous growth of its car market since 2005.

Citroen unveils its new city car the C1

Citroën has unveiled the second generation of its C1 city car from segment A, which will be produced as of the summer of 2014 in the Toyota-PSA plant in Kolin, Czech Republic, alongside the new Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo .

Unlike the small Peugeot, the Citroën will not change its name. Nevertheless, it replaces a model produced at more than 760 000 units between 2005 (launch date) and 2013, slightly less than the Peugeot 107 (790 000 units) and a little more than the Toyota Aygo (740 000 units) over the same marketing period.

Produced in both a three and a five door model, unlike its main competitor the new Renault Twingo available only in a five door version. The new Citroën the C1 differs from the Peugeot 108 in the design of the front of the car.

The C1 (like the 108) will be available only in a petrol version with two 3-cylinder engines a 1.0 from Toyota and a 1.2 from PSA Peugeot-Citroën. These models follow the general trend of abandoning diesel vehicles on segment A (following the new European regulations on gas emissions).

Inovev expects a production volume of nearly 100 000 units per year for the Citroën C1 (three and five-door versions) .

The equivalent model by Toyota (new Aygo) is expected to reach a production volume of around 100 000 units per year, like the Peugeot 108. We must remember that the Kolin plant has a current production capacity of 340 000 vehicles per year.

The Ukrainian market has lost two thirds of its volume since 2008

Ukrainian passenger car market fell by 10.2% in 2013, down to 213,322 units (against 237,602 in 2012 and 220,619 in 2011).
This market, geographically and politically close to Russia is comparable to that of Sweden, while the population is five times greater in Ukraine than in Sweden (46 million against 9.2 million). The motorization rate is therefore five times lower in Ukraine than in Sweden (about 100 cars per 1 000 inhabitants in Ukraine). It is hardly higher than in Iran, and 2.5 times lower than in Russia.
Ukrainian passenger car market has experienced two exceptional years in 2007 and 2008 ( around 600,000 units per year), but it’s regular level is around 300,000 units per year.Since 2009, the country is immerged into a deep economic crisis (debt).

As for carmakers, the Renault -Nissan group is leader of the Ukrainian market (thanks in part to AvtoVAZ) with 15% market share, ahead of the Hyundai-Kia group (14%), the Volkswagen group (13%) and ZAZ (8%), a local manufacturer that produces former Daewoo vehicles under its name. Note that the largest increase in three years has been achieved by the Chinese automaker Geely, which rose from 3% of the Ukrainian market in 2011 to 5% in 2012 and 8 % in 2013.

As for models, the ZAZ Sens (=Daewoo Lanos), which is produced in Ukraine, remains the market leader in 2013 (7,096 units), ahead of Hyundai Accent (5,573 units) , Geely CK (5069 units) , ZAZ Vida (Chevrolet Aveo) and Renault Logan (Logan Dacia).

Opel is reorganizing its entry range models (segment A)

With the imminent end of life of the Agila (2014), Opel is reorganizing in Europe its entry range models (segment A). Opel's entry level model will no longer be a five-door hatchback with a design based on that of a Suzuki (ie the Splash), but a small three-door hatchback, the Adam. The launch of the Adam dates back to 2012, and it better matches the current market for small Premium sedans (like the Fiat 500, segment A and the Citroën DS3 segment B).

The Adam will also soon be marketed in a soft top version (like the Fiat 500 and DS3) and in a "mini-crossover" version (like the Fiat Panda) but without AWD.

When observing production levels of both the Opel Agila and Opel Adam sold in the same markets we can see that the two curves intersect in 2013, proof that the Agila no longer corresponds to the request of the market (this model has been declining continuously since 2009) while the Adam better corresponds to the current demand, this model is expected as of 2014 to surpass the production levels of the Agila during its best year (2008). The Agila is produced at the Suzuki plant in Hungary (Esztergom) and the Adam at the Opel plant in Germany (Eisenach).

As for the Corsa (segment B), positioned just above the Adam in terms of range, it will be restyled next fall.

Ukrainian production collapsed after 2008

Ukrainian automobile production followed exactly the curve of the domestic market, which fell in 2009 and has not really recovered since. The 2008 financial crisis has placed the country in a situation of near bankruptcy like Greece in southeastern Europe.

Banks limited drastically access to credit in 2009. Consequently car sales, that had boomed in 2007 and 2008, suddenly tumbled by almost 65%! Ukrainian automobile production that supplied the domestic market with only 4 carmakers (ZAZ , Bogdan , Krasz, Eurocar) selling nine different brands (ZAZ, Lada, Chery, Geely, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda, Ssangyong) collapsed at the same time, from 400,000 units annually in 2007 and 2008 to less than 100,000 from 2009 ( a drop of over 75 %). In 2013 , less than 50,000 vehicles were produced in Ukraine, and the question of the survival of the automobile industry in this country is now acute.

Note that the Ukrainian vehicles are produced by using kits from abroad: ZAZ Sens (from Korea = Daewoo Lanos), ZAZ Forza (from China Chery = Fulwin2 ) A13 Chery and Geely CK (from China) , Lada 2110 (from Russia), Chevrolet Aveo (from Korea) , Hyundai, Kia and Ssangyong (from Korea), Skoda (from Czech Republic).
