Ssangyong changes hands again
- The Korean manufacturer Ssangyong, which specializes in SUVs, is once again changing ownership.
- Created in 1954 and having started car manufacturing in 1988, Ssangyong was taken over in 1997 by its compatriot Daewoo. In the year 2000, Daewoo was taken over by GM, which refused to take over Ssangyong, as it already had many SUVs in its range. In 2004, Ssangyong was taken over by the Chinese SAIC, but the Korean manufacturer went bankrupt in 2009, following the subprime crisis which affected many car manufacturers. SAIC then separated from Ssangyong, which was bought in 2011 by the Indian Mahindra, also specializing in SUVs. But the Korean manufacturer went bankrupt again in 2020 following losses accumulated over fifteen quarters and production dropping from 150,000 units in 2015 to 133,000 in 2019, 107,000 in 2020 and 77,000 in 2021. In January 2022, a consortium led by Edison Motors buys Ssangyong from Mahindra.
- Ssangyong is therefore returning to its country of origin since Edison Motors is a Korean manufacturer of electric buses.
- The objective of this company is therefore to switch the Ssangyong brand to all-electric (today this brand does not offer any electric model) between 2025 and 2028, and thus compete with Tesla and Volkswagen.
- The Korando will be the first model of the brand to receive a 100% electric motor, then this type of motorization will be generalized to all of the brand's models. Edison Motors plans to launch 10 new models by 2025 and 20 new models by 2030. The stimulus program is ambitious.

Tesla sold nearly a million cars worldwide in 2021
- The Californian manufacturer Tesla, which specializes in the production of electric cars, sold 936,172 vehicles worldwide in 2021, which represents an increase of 87.4% compared to 2020. Indeed, Tesla's sales in 2020 had not exceeded 499,550 units, which already represented an increase of 36.9% compared to 2019, while the year 2020 had been seriously affected by the coronavirus crisis, and the global automotive market had fallen by more than 15% that year.
- Tesla benefited from the growing global demand for electric vehicles, a suitable range of electric cars (2 sedans and 2 different segment SUVs) and the start-up of its factory in China, a country where the demand for electric cars is very high, strong and which today represents more than half of the brand's production.
- Tesla also has a head start on its competitors in that its range of electric cars has developed earlier (since 2012). It should also be added that the rental company Hertz has ordered 100,000 Tesla, which will be delivered in 2022 and 2023, which will further increase the brand's production volume.
- Sales in 2021 focused on the Model 3 and Y which accounted for 911,208 sales, with the more expensive Model S and X accounting for just 24,964 sales. The upcoming arrival of the Model 2 should boost Tesla's business, especially since the brand will soon have a third factory, located this time in Germany.

The Toyota Yaris remains the most produced car in France in 2021
- The Toyota Yaris remained the most produced car in France in 2021 (as in 2020), ahead of the Peugeot 3008 which had beaten it in 2018 and 2019. There was only one generation of Yaris produced at the Onnaing site last year, while the previous year two generations had accumulated, and the total production was 156,464 units against 147,547 Peugeot 3008s produced at Sochaux. In 2020, the Toyota Yaris had been produced at 188,142 units (including two generations) and the Peugeot 3008 at 148,733 units. Despite a 16.8% drop in its production volume in 2021 compared to 2020, the Toyota Yaris remains a European success while the Peugeot 3008 has lost a lot of influence in the last two years mainly due to the success of the Peugeot 2008 which took him many customers, this model being manufactured in Spain and no longer in France.
- The Toyota Yaris sold 179,383 units in Europe in 2021, while the Peugeot 3008 did not exceed 150,000 units. The Peugeot 2008, for its part, exceeded 180,000 sales, which means that it would undoubtedly have been the most produced car in France if the Stellantis group had decided to manufacture it in France, like the previous generation.
- It should be added that the Onnaing site began manufacturing the Yaris Cross from the third quarter of 2021, and that 47,791 copies left the factory until December 31. The Onnaing plant therefore manufactured a total of 204,255 vehicles in 2021.
- Finally, it should be noted that the Czech site in Kolin began production of part of the Toyota Yaris in the fourth quarter of 2021, a production volume which is estimated at 7,730 units manufactured until December 31. The production target for the Yaris in Kolin is 100,000 units per year at cruising speed.

The European PC market (29 countries) fell by 25.5% in 2021 compared to 2019

The European PC market (29 countries) fell by 25.5% in 2021 compared to 2019
- The European market (European Union + Great Britain + Switzerland + Norway) for passenger cars fell by 1.5% in 2021 compared to 2020 and by 25.5% compared to 2019, since the year 2020 had already experienced a drop of 24.3% compared to 2019. The European market has therefore stabilized at a low point, due to both the health crisis and the semiconductor crisis, but it is also likely that the strong increase in the average price of cars as well as customer wait-and-see attitude towards electric vehicles is slowing down purchases and encouraging potential customers to keep their car longer or to buy a second-hand car.
- The levels for 2020 and 2021 are therefore lower than those for 2012 and 2013, which had been particularly mediocre. Actuelly we get back to the 1986 level… For 2022, Inovev foresees a slight revival of the European market, with an increase of nearly 5%.
- In 2021, the Volkswagen group has a 25% market share, ahead of Stellantis (20%), Renault-Nissan (12%), Hyundai-Kia (9%), BMW (7%), Toyota (6%) and Daimler (6%). Ford is the manufacturer that suffered the most in 2021 (-20%), with the Renault-Nissan group (-13%) which suffered from the collapse of Mitsubishi (-29%). On the contrary, some manufacturers are seeing their sales progress, such as Tesla (+71%), Hyundai-Kia (+21%), Toyota (+9%), Suzuki (+9%), BMW (+1%), Volvo (+ 1%) and all Chinese manufacturers (+127%) which registered 82,500 cars in Europe in 2021.
- By model, the Volkswagen Golf remains the European market leader in 2021, but it is now closely followed by the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008, Renault Clio and Dacia Sandero. The precise figures will only be known in a month.

The French market is down 25.1% in 2021 compared to 2019

The French market is down 25.1% in 2021 compared to 2019
- The French automotive market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2021 compared to 2019 (-25.1%), a level which remains very slightly higher than that of 2020 (+ 0.5%). In total, France registered 1,659,146 passenger cars last year, up from 1,650,118 in 2020 and 2,214,428 in 2019. This is the lowest figure since 1975, after 2020.
- The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2021 relate to the lack of supply of the semiconductors that automakers need to make their cars marketable. But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars as well as a wait-and-see attitude by customers towards the electric vehicle is holding back purchases and causing potential customers to keep their cars longer or to buy a used car.
- The ranking by brands shows that Peugeot for the first time supplanted Renault on this market in 2021, with 285,966 units against 268,975, these two brands being the best-selling on the French market, ahead of Citroën (161,926 units), Dacia (125 207 units) and Volkswagen (105,299 units).
- By groups, Stellantis is the French market leader in 2021 (560,361 units), ahead of Renault-Nissan (424,185 units), Volkswagen (220,957 units), Toyota (100,876 units) and Hyundai-Kia (89,465 units).
- The best-selling models were Peugeot 208 (88,057 units), Renault Clio (85,385 units), Dacia Sandero (77,054 units), Peugeot 2008 (75,478 units), Citroën C3 (65,395 units) and the Renault Captur (52,605 units).
