The global automotive market (sales) increased by 3.5% in 2021 (2/2)
- The global automotive market (VP+LCV), which increased by 3.5% in 2021, remains down 9.5% compared to 2019. The six leading markets are China (33% of the global market), the United States States (19% of the world market), Europe 29 countries (17% of the world market), Japan (6% of the world market), India (5% of the world market) and Brazil (3% of the world market worldwide). These six markets represent 83% of the global market in 2021.
- China is one of the few countries to have progressed in 2021, the gap between China and its pursuers the United States and Europe has therefore increased last year. These last two markets could not exceed 15 million vehicle sales while China exceeded 25 million sales. The third level of market volume is represented by Japan, India and Brazil, a volume close to 5 million vehicles each. The gap between these three countries has narrowed considerably over the past ten years.
- The next three countries are Korea, Russia and Canada which each represent 2% of the world market.
- The first sales figures by manufacturer reveal that the Toyota group remained the world's leading manufacturer in 2021 (10.5 million vehicles sold) ahead of the Volkswagen group (8.9 million units), the Renault-Nissan group (7.7 million units), the Stellantis group (6.3 million units), the Hyundai-Kia group (6.2 million units), the GM group (6.0 million units), the Honda group (4.4 million units) and Ford group (3.7 million units). Compared to 2020, the GM group lost one place and the Stellantis group resulting from the merger of PSA and FCA took fourth place.

- According to Inovev's calculations, global vehicle production (PC+LCV) increased by 3.5% in 2021, which is less than expected in 2020. According to manufacturers, the semiconductor crisis would be responsible for this situation (after a year 2020 marked by the coronavirus crisis), but it is possible that the sharp increase in the average price of cars will slow down purchases and encourage potential customers to keep their vehicle longer. Compared to 2019, global production (PC+LCV) is down 13%. The second half of 2021 was significantly worse than the first half of 2021, as the gap between sales volumes then increased compared to 2019 and even compared to 2020, but the month of December returned to the level of previous years, which bodes well for a gradual improvement in the situation.
- China, which is one of the few countries to see its production increase in 2021 (+3.3%), represents 33% of global automotive production, ahead of Europe 29 countries (17%), the United States (12%) and Japan (10%). These four markets represent 72% of global automotive production, with disparities in flows, since China imports and exports few vehicles, compared to the volume of its production, while Europe exports and imports a significant amount. of vehicles, that the United States imports far more than it exports (despite the performance of Tesla, which exported 92,000 vehicles last year) and that Japan exports far more than it imports (this country exports half of its production while Japanese manufacturers already have many factories transplanted abroad).
- For 2022, Inovev expects a 5% increase in global production.

The breakdown of global sales of BEV, PHEV and HEV-Full in 2021
- The global market for cars with alternative engines represented 9.3 million vehicles in 2021, or nearly 12% of the total for all engines. All-electric cars (BEV) accounted for 4,548,627 units, of which 2,751,755 were sold in China, 1,176,280 in Europe, 490,298 in the United States, 18,555 in Japan, 42,276 in South Korea and 69,463 in the rest of the world.
- Plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV) represented 1,780,162 units including 597,752 in China, 961,756 in Europe, 176,292 in the United States, 24,202 in Japan, 17,405 in South Korea and 2,755 in the rest of the world.
- Non-rechargeable hybrid cars (HEV-Full) represented 2,971,308 units including 515,705 units in China, 646,604 in Europe, 801,895 in the United States, 857,540 in Japan, 38,747 in South Korea and 110,817 in the rest of the world.
- China therefore registered 3,865,212 cars with alternative engines (i.e. 18% of the Chinese market), Europe 2,784,640 units (i.e. 24% of the European market), the United States 1,468,485 units (i.e. 12% of the American market), Japan 900,297 units (24% of the Japanese market) and South Korea 98,428 units (i.e. 7% of the Korean market).
- BEVs represent 13% of the Chinese market, 10% of the European market, 4% of the American market and 0.5% of the Japanese market. PHEVs represent 3% of the Chinese market, 8% of the European market, 1% of the American market and 0.5% of the Japanese market. HEV-Full represent 2% of the Chinese market, 6% of the European market, 7% of the American market and 23% of the Japanese market. BEVs are therefore mainly sold in China, PHEVs in Europe, HEV-Fulls in the United States and Japan.

Comparison of sales of European Premium manufacturers in 2021
- Premium manufacturers are brands specializing in high-end cars. In a global market growing by 3.5% in 2021 compared to 2020, to nearly 80 million units (VP+LCV), European Premium manufacturers represented 7.5 million vehicles, i.e. slightly less than 10% of worldwide sales. The sales growth of these manufacturers is slightly higher than that of all manufacturers, which means that the demand for this type of model is increasing.
- The BMW brand remains the European leader in this market, with 2,213,795 units (+9.1%), followed by Mercedes (2,054,962 units; -1.6%) and Audi (1,680,500 units; -0, 7%). Behind, the other brands are well behind. Volvo moved into fourth place (698,693 units; +5.6%), ahead of Land Rover (334,586 units; +3.4%), Porsche (301,900 units; +10.9%), Jaguar (86,270 units; -15.9%), DS (54,175 units; +5.2%), Alfa-Roméo (39,889 units; -30%), Maserati (20,000 units), Bentley (14,600 units), Ferrari (11,155 units), Lamborghini (8,405 units), Rolls-Royce (5,586 units), Aston-Martin (5,833 units) and Alpine (2,659 units).
- The non-European competitors of these Premium brands are having difficulty making progress, no doubt because of the reputation and age of the European brands in this category. Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler, Lexus, Infiniti and Acura are seeing their sales stagnate or even decline. On the other hand, the Californian brand Tesla almost doubled its sales in 2021 compared to 2020, but it still remains far from the European Premiums (936,000 sales). As for the Korean brand Genesis, it is barely emerging (200,000 sales) and is in the process of expanding its range to reach the level of its Japanese competitors.
