2016 Japanese Hybrid Vehicle (HEV) Market

2016 Japanese Hybrid Vehicle (HEV) Market
- With nearly 1 million non-plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in Japan in 2016 (up 5%), the Japanese market is the world's leading non-plug-in hybrid vehicle market (HEV), far ahead of the US (347,000 in 2016), Europe (233,000 in 2016) and China (less than 50,000 in 2016).
- The Japanese non-plug-in hybrid market had declined in 2015, but increased again in 2016, due to the renewal of the Toyota Prius which holds a prominent position (25% of the non-plug-in hybrid market).
- This is due to the fact that Toyota has been promoting this type of engine since 1997 and has made it available in most of its models, with the result that today half of the Toyota vehicles sold in Japan are non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HEVs), two thirds of the HEVs sold in Japan are Toyota, and that HEVS make up a quarter of the Japanese market overall. In comparison, the market for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) is very low in Japan: there are only 22,500 sales in 2016.
- The Toyota group has five models in the top 10 hybrids (HEVs) in 2016: Prius, Prius C (Aqua), Corolla, Crown, RX400h and NX300h. Suzuki, Nissan and Honda are offering new models that account for one-third of hybrid sales in Japan.

- 詳細
2016 World Hybrid (HEV) Vehicle Market
- The worldwide market for non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HEVs) grew by 5% in 2016 to 1.65 million units. The market was notably driven by the launch of the new generation Toyota Prius which accounts for nearly 25% of global sales of this non-plug-in hybrid market (400,000 units in 2016 out of a total of 1.65 million).
- Sales of hybrids quadrupled worldwide between 2006 and 2016, from 0.4 million to 1.65 million units, while at the same time worldwide sales of vehicles (all engines combined) increased only 40%.
- Compared to worldwide sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid Plug-In (PHEV), worldwide sales of hybrid vehicles (HEVs) are still much higher, but the gap between the two types of vehicles is decreasing year by year: 2.7 times more in 2016 (1.65 million compared to 0.6 million), whereas in 2014 it was 5.7 times more (1.65 million compared to 0.3 million).
- In 2016, Japan accounts for 59% of the world market for hybrids, the United States 19% and Europe 13%.
- The Toyota group sells more than 70% of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles globally, 1.2 million units in 2016. The Hyundai-Kia group will attempt to take a growing share of the hybrid market with the Hyundai Ioniq and the Kia Niro, as well as some 20 other new models to be launched by 2020.

Nissan Avila plant will stop utility vehicle production in 2019

Nissan Avila plant will stop utility vehicle production in 2019
- Nissan (a subsidiary of the Renault-Nissan Group) is currently producing the Nissan NT400 / 500 (formerly Cabstar) and Renault Maxity at its Spanish plant in Avila, at a rate of 15,000 to 20,000 units per year.
- The NT400 and NT500 are sold throughout Europe by the Nissan network, while the Renault Maxity is sold through the Volvo Trucks subsidiary Renault Trucks in the same region.
- The Volvo Trucks Group produces and markets trucks and buses under the Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, Mack Trucks and UD truck brands. This group is one of the top two in the world, with the Daimler Group.
- In 2016, less than 19,000 units (NT400 / 500 and Maxity) came off Avila assembly lines.
- Given the low production volume of these models and, according to Renault-Nissan analysis, the high level of investment needed to bring them into line with future heavy vehicles standards Renault-Nissan prefers to abandon production of this type of vehicles to focus on their core commercial vehicle business: LUVs for Nissan and trucks for Renault Trucks.
- The Avila plant will therefore cease this activity in September 2019, to become a body spare parts production facility.

Toyota sold 1,2 million non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV) in the world in 2016

Toyota sold 1,2 million non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV) in the world in 2016
- Pioneer in the field of non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles (HEV) since 1997, the Toyota Group (Toyota and Lexus) crossed the 200,000 annual sales mark eight years later, in 2005, and 400,000 annual sales in 2007. The 1,200,000 annual sales level was reached in 2012. From 2012 to 2016, annual sales have stabilized at this level.
- This stabilization of global Toyota hybrid sales can be explained by the fact that competition has increased considerably, not only for non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles but also for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV).
In addition, in the US, sales of Toyota non-rechargeable hybrids suffered from the fall in oil prices which favored sales of thermal vehicles, including SUVs and pick-ups.
In addition, in the US, sales of Toyota non-rechargeable hybrids suffered from the fall in oil prices which favored sales of thermal vehicles, including SUVs and pick-ups.
- Inovev expects a revival of non-rechargeable hybrid Toyota sales over the next four years, notably due to the expansion of its range of vehicles (RAV4, CHR), and the ramp up of the new Prius even though competition will continue to grow around the world.
- Inovev expects 1.4 million Toyota Hybrid and Lexus Hybrid sales in 2020.

PSA will increase production capacity at Trnava factory

PSA will increase production capacity at Trnava factory
- In view of the success of the new generation of the Citroën C3 (54,000 sales in the first quarter of 2017, compared with 37,000 sales in the first quarter of 2016 for the old generation), PSA group decided to increase the capacity of its Slovak plant at Trnava where this model is produced (alongside the Peugeot 208). At this rate, more than 200,000 Citroën C3 will be sold for the whole of 2017, to which will be added 150,000 Peugeot 208 scheduled this year in this plant, that is to say more than 350,000 vehicles in total. However, the Trnava plant now only has 300,000 vehicles capacity per year.
- The planned transfer of 70,000 Peugeot 208s in 2017 and 2018 from the Trnava to Poissy plant will not be enough to compensate for the additional volumes for the Citroën C3. PSA will therefore have to increase these capacities from 300,000 to 350,000 vehicles a year in 2017 and then to 400,000 vehicles per year in 2019 when the new generation of the Peugeot 208 will appear. The new installed capacity will meet the demand for Citroën C3 and Peugeot 208, ideally 200,000 units a year for each of the two models, but which can be modulated should there be a lesser success of one model compared to the other.
- The Trnava site will thus be the biggest plant in Slovakia in 2020, with that of Bratislava (VW Group).
