The Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling model in Europe in Q1-2023
The Tesla Model Y SUV became the best-selling model in Europe in the first quarter of 2023. It is the first time that a battery electric model has been the European market leader. This is the first time that an American model has been the European market leader. It is also the first time that an SUV has been the European market leader. Finally, it is the first time that a Tesla has been the European market leader for a quarter.

Between the first quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, sales of the Tesla Model Y in Europe were multiplied by 2.8 and the production of the model on a European site is one of the factor explaining this strong sales increase. Before the production in Berlin, Tesla deliveries were chaotic, mainly quarterly. The increase in sales of Tesla Model Y (+45,000 sales) more than offset the drop in Tesla Model 3 (-15,000 sales) on the European market.

The Dacia Sandero is in second position on the European market and it is the antithesis of the Tesla Model Y. It is a model with a combustion engine (the Tesla is battery electric vehicle) at a low price (the Tesla is expensive). This is the first time that a Dacia model has risen to second place on the European market over a quarter.

The former leader Volkswagen Golf, supplanted by the Volkswagen T-Roc (4th) and Tiguan (8th), is now ranked at the 9th place, well behind the Peugeot 208 (3rd) and Opel Corsa (5th). The Renault Clio is 6th followed by the Fiat 500 (7th). On the Top 25, there are 14 SUVs and 11 sedans. Over the first 3 months of 2023, BEV sales represent 13.5% of the European market.
Evolution of SUV and MPV sales in China between 2000 and 2022
SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) sales in China have grown significantly since the early 2000s, driven by strong carmaker marketing. While their market share was close to 0% in the year 2000, it rose to 10% in 2010, then 30% in 2015, 40% in 2017 and 47% since 2020. The share of SUVs seems to be levelling off just below 50% despite a considerable offer of this type of model on the Chinese market.

In volume, SUV sales have grown from virtually zero in the year 2000 to 2 million in 2012, 4 million in 2014, 10 million in 2017 and finally 11 million in 2022. The slight drop in SUV sales in 2018, 2019 and 2020 is due to an overall decline of the Chinese market during those three years. With the expected increase of the Chinese market and a market share that is probably stabilizing, the sales volume of SUVs is bound to increase further for a few years.

On the other hand, sales of MPVs (Multi Purpose Vehicles) in China have fallen significantly since 2017 but they have increased until 2016, contrary to what happened in Europe and the United States. Specifically to China, the SUVs and MPVs sales growth took place in parallel until 2016. Then MPV customers turned to sedans and SUVs.

MPVs market share, which peaked at 10% in 2016, gradually fell to 8% in 2017, 7% in 2018, 6% in 2019, 5% in 2020 and 2021, then 4% in 2022. The sales decline of MPV seems inevitable. In this context, sedans represent 49% of the Chinese market in 2022, compared to 61% in 2015, 81% in 2012, 90% in 2009 and 92% in 2005.
Inovev forecasts 70,000 units a year of the new Ford Transit Courier
In 2014, Ford Europe decided to add a new light utility vehicle to its product range, the Transit Courier (N1-1 segment), which is in price and dimensions below the Transit Connect (N1-2 segment) which appeared in 2002 and renewed in 2013. This 4.16 m model (a Transit Connect then measured 4.42 m) competed with the slightly shorter Fiat Fiorino, Peugeot Bipper and Citroën Nemo.

The Transit Courier was produced in Turkey, alongside the Transit Custom (N1-3) and Transit (N1-3). It had a decent career in Europe with nearly 100,000 sales per year between 2016 and 2018), but fell back to 60,000 units per year after 2018. In fact, the Transit Courier sells about as much as the Transit Connect. But unlike the Transit Connect, the new generation of the Transit Courier that was just presented this month owes nothing to Volkswagen. The new model is designed entirely by Ford Europe.

The new Transit Courier has been extended by 18 cm compared to the previous, to reach 4.34 m, approaching the Transit Connect whose length has increased from 4.42 m to 4.50 m between the old and the new generation. The width increases from 1.76 m to 1.79 m and the height from 1.75 m to 1.83 m. This increase in dimensions makes it possible to carry a greater volume of goods. The Transit Courier and Connect will however now be competitors, as at Renault, the Express and the Kangoo.

Ford offers a 1.0 petrol engine (100 hp and 125 hp), a 1.5 diesel engine (100 hp) and a battery electric version (136 hp) on its new Transit Courier. Inovev forecasts 70,000 sales per year of the new model which will be produced in Craiova in Romania, alongside the Ford Puma which will receive the same electric motor.
The 25 best-selling SUVs in China in 2021 and 2022
₋ The Tesla Model Y (battery electric) becomes the best-selling SUV in China in 2022. But it is closely followed by the BYD Song DM (PHEV).

Inovev forecasts 100,000 units per year in 2030 of the Cupra Tavascan
The Cupra brand (subsidiary of the Volkswagen group, initially linked to Seat) has just unveiled its new battery electric SUV from the D-segment, the Tavascan, which is located in the carmaker's range above the  Born (C-segment).

The Tavascan is 4.64 m long against 4.33 m for the Born derived from the Volkswagen ID3. It is a little longer than the Volkswagen ID5 (4.60 m) and a little shorter than the Skoda Enyaq (4.65 m), two battery electric models from the Volkswagen group that can be considered competitors of the CupraTavascan. But the closest competitor of the Tavascan within the Volkswagen group seems to be the Audi Q4 E-Tron (4.59 m) which targets the same type of customers. All these models share the same MEB platform dedicated to the battery electric vehicles of the Volkswagen group.

Above all, the CupraTavascan seems to be the ideal rival of the Tesla Model Y (4.75 m) which has just taken the leading position on the European market in the first quarter of 2023. Other competitors such as the Ford Mustang Mach E or the Nissan Ariya are also in the sights of the Tavascan.

The Tavascan's electric motor (mounted at the rear) delivers 207 kW and its battery has a capacity of 77 kWh, allowing a range of 550 km according to the WLTP cycle. A sports version delivering 246 kW is scheduled for next year.

While this new model was developed in Barcelona, its production will be made in China, in a Volkswagen factory located in Anhui, in order to respond directly to local demand but also to external demand. According to Inovev, production of the Tavascan could initially reach 50,000 units per year and then 100,000 per year around 2030.
