New declines in the Chinese market in October and November 2018
The Chinese automotive market (PC + LCV) continued to decline in October and November 2018, after declines in July, August and September 2018. The potential of the Chinese market to increase  becomes questionable in the coming years because the decreases recorded in recent months are becoming increasingly important (-11.6% in September, -12.0% in October, -12.5% in November) and the Chinese market may evened the year with negative growth year on year (-2.0% on the cumulative 11 months 2018 and even -3.0% for passenger cars), which has not happened for two decades. In addition, the month of November was the sixth month of decline in vehicle sales in China for the whole year, and December ‘s prospects look poor.

The high rate of equipment in major Chinese cities and the new market orientation towards cleaner vehicles, with a growing presence of electric powered models (+ 57.8% of sales in November 2018 compared to November 2017, to 129,000 units) could explain this reversal of the Chinese market.

We must also look at the economic activity of the country which has been slowed by the trade dispute between China and the United States (the lowest growth rate recorded since 2009), and the automotive market has necessarily suffered  from the consequences. If the Chinese government  decides to alleviate this situation, they could use tax levers to revive the market, by reducing the tax rate on the purchase of new vehicles from 10% to 5%, but it would probably be difficult to repeat this operation in the future.

Volkswagen could assemble cars in Ford factories in the USA
The Volkswagen group could assemble cars in Ford factories in the US, as part of an alliance that both groups are now defining. This is the announcement that was made by the manufacturer a few days ago.

The Ford Group now has seven assembly plants located in the United States, including Wayne (Michigan), which is in heavy overcapacity. It is therefore the factory best suited to manufacturing Volkswagen Group models. The Ford group has assembled a total of 2.46 million vehicles in the US in 2017 and a little less in 2018.

The Volkswagen Group has a single assembly plant located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. This plant, which manufactures the Passat sedans and Atlas SUV, is itself in overcapacity since 140,000 vehicles were assembled in 2017 and 130,000 in 2018, against capacities of 150,000 units per year.

What would be the Volkswagen Group models likely to be produced in Ford factories in the USA ? Those models with high sales in this market and who are not manufactured in other factories in Mexico or Canada.

The models that could benefit from this transfer are therefore as follows: Audi A4 (33,000 sales in the first 11 months of 2018), Audi Q7 (33,000 sales), Audi A5 (24,000 sales), Audi A3 (18,000 sales) , Audi Q3 (16,000 sales). We see that the Audi brand could be the first to benefit from sharing Ford factories in the US.

Inovev forecasts 200,000 new Kia Souls per year
Kia (a subsidiary of the Korean group Hyundai-Kia) introduced the new generation of the Soul compact MPV whose origins date back to 2008 and which had been renewed in 2014.

The third generation with SOP in 2018, takes the silhouette of his elders but will only be available in a thermal engine version in North America (2.0 l  petrol engines147hp and 1.6 l turbo 200hp). In other regions (including Europe), the new Kia Soul will only be available in a 100% electric version that already made up a large part of the sales of the previous generation (more than 55% in the first 11 months of 2018).

The engine is the same as the 100% electric Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona. It is a permanent magnet motor developing 150kW (the equivalent of 204hp) and powered by a battery of 64kWh, while the previous version was equipped with an electric motor of 81,5kW (110hp) and a battery of 30kWh. The new Kia Soul is therefore twice as powerful.

Its autonomy would be 480km (identical to that of Kona EV) instead of the 250km of the old model.

The Kia Soul will be manufactured as previously on the Korean site of Kwangju ( in the South West of South Korea) alongside the Carens which is soon to be discontinued. Inovev expects annual sales of 200,000 for the new Kia Soul (all engines combined).

The first Tesla Model 3 for Europe will be delivered early February 2019
After the first deliveries to the US market (110,000 registrations made in the first 11 months of 2018), where it is now 11th in the sedan market, the Tesla Model 3 will be exported to European markets from early February 2019.

The production of the Tesla Model 3 at the Fremont site in California has reached a new threshold with a volume of almost 30,000 units produced each month, which now makes it possible to cover both the American and European markets. The Chinese market should follow during the year.

At this rate, there should be more than 300 000 Model 3 for the whole of 2018.

By adding the Model S and Model X, the production of the Fremont site will then be close to saturation, this is why the automaker wants to accelerate the construction of its Chinese plant that will produce the models for the Chinese market.

In 2018, Tesla sold nearly 30,000 (electric) cars in Europe, but only Model S and Model X. Given a less high-end positioning (price, dimensions), the Model 3 should allow Tesla to double these sales in Europe in 2019, from 30,000 to 60,000 units (30,000 Model 3). Tesla's first European markets in 2018 are Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 new Hyundai Palisade SUVs per year
The Korean manufacturer Hyundai is completing its SUV range with the Palisade, which is at the top of the range. The Palisade is indeed a large SUV of 4.98m long that can accommodate seven people and is primarily intended for the North American market, which is very fond of large SUVs.

The Palisade is in the Hyundai SUV range above Kona (B-segment), Tucson (C-segment), Santa Fe (D-segment) and Grand Santa Fe (E-segment). The Grand Santa Fe is a lengthened version of the Santa Fe that has seven seats and replaced the iX55 in 2015.

The Palisade features a 295hp V6 3.8l petrol engine, making it the most powerful model in the Hyundai lineup. With its appearance and size, the Palisade intends to compete with the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander and Sequoia, but also with the Cadillac Escalade, which has a similar style. The Palisade is expected to be produced in South Korea and its production volume should not exceed 50,000 units per year.

This new model will also soon be available in a plug-in hybrid version, like its cousin Kia Telluride (who will share its platform) which will be at the top of the Kia range. This new Kia model is expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2019.
