The BMW Group sold 2.4 million vehicles in 2022
- The BMW group sold 2.4 million vehicles in 2022, compared to 2.52 million in 2021, which represents a drop of 4.8% in a global market at -2%. It should be noted, however, that the Rolls-Royce firm, which is part of the BMW group, broke its sales record last year, with 6,021 units sold (+ 7.8% compared to 2021), but in a very narrow market of niche.
- The BMW brand sold 2,100,692 vehicles (-5.1% compared to 2021) and the Mini brand 292,923 vehicles (-3% compared to 2021). The BMW group is therefore in 2022 in 11th place among global carmakers, just behind Mercedes (2.48 million units, up 2.1% compared to 2021).
- BEV sales amounted to 260,000 units in 2022 (including 216,000 BMW and 44,000 Mini) while PHEV sales reached 174,000 units (including 157,000 BMW and 17,000 Mini). A total of 434,000 plug-in vehicles were sold compared to 328,000 in 2021, representing 18% of total BMW Group sales, including 11% BEV and 7% PHEV. For 2023, the BMW group announces that it has for objective to sell 15% of BEVs.
- The group's best-selling model in 2022 is the 3 Series (D-segment sedan) which has sold 373,000 units worldwide. This model is available today in thermal version and in PHEV version, but not in BEV version.
- Europe remains the BMW Group's leading market (818,000 sales in 2022), ahead of China (695,000 sales) and the United States (362,000 sales). These three markets account for 78% of the BMW Group's passenger car sales.

- The Suzuki group (Suzuki, Maruti) sold 2.35 million light vehicles (passengers – PCs and light utility vehicles - LUVs) in 2020, down 19.1% compared to 2019. Suzuki is partly dependent on its results on the Indian market, which represents more than half of its worldwide sales (1,237,000 units in 2020, or 52% of its sales). However, its registrations fell 18% in India last year.
- In addition, its market share has shrunk in many markets, due to a too small product range, too focused on the lower segments (A and B), and the lack of real alternative engines (PHEV and BEV).
- The arrival of Suzuki Across and Swace (rebadged hybrid Toyota models) may allow the carmaker to expand its market, which has had to cancel its Celerio, Baleno and Jimny models. But this contribution cannot mask the weakness and unsustainability of Suzuki at the global level, this carmaker having had to withdraw from the American, Chinese and Russian markets. For now, Suzuki has managed to maintain its tenth place in the world, but for how long.
- Suzuki's global sales in 2020 break down as follows:
• India is by far its largest market, with 1.24 million vehicles, or 52% of its global sales (as in 2019).
• Japan is its second market, with 631,000 vehicles, or 27% of its worldwide sales (compared to 24% in 2019).
• Europe is its third market, with 152,000 vehicles, or 7% of its global sales (compared to 8% in 2019).
• These three markets represent 86% of Suzuki's global sales in 2020 (up from 84% in 2019).

What are the current status of VW and GM in China?
- The two groups, Volkswagen and General Motors, still lead the Chinese market in 2022, although their market share has decreased in recent years. With the rise of Chinese carmakers, which now account for more than half of car sales in China, and the sharp decline of several foreign carmakers such as Hyundai-Kia, Ford or Stellantis, the Volkswagen and General Motors groups maintained their leading position in the Chinese market.
- What strategy allows these two carmakers to avoid a drop in this market? First, these two carmakers rely on several brands in their catalog (five brands for the Volkswagen Group and five brands for the General Motors Group). Compared to the Chinese groups, which have multiple brands, the brands of the VW and GM groups are better known and have been in business longer. Moreover, they do not compete with each other. Second, the Volkswagen and General Motors groups have a very broad product range that has been gradually built up over the last twenty years. For example, the VW brand has 33 different models and Audi has 12 different models. At GM, the Buick brand has 15 different models, the Chevrolet brand has 12 different models, plus 12 Baojun models, 11 Wuling models and 7 Cadillac models. In total, the VW Group has 54 models and the GM Group has 57 models, twice as many as in the most extensive model ranges of the other carmakers.
- Thus, VW's and GM's strong presence in the Chinese market is due to their long market presence and the number of models in their lineups, rather than technological lead. However, GM Group can be considered the third largest BEV seller in China (behind BYD and Tesla), thanks to the Wuling brand (in which GM has a 34% stake), which produces the Hong Guang Mini EV, sold at 572,000 units in 2022.

- Chinese carmakers (excluding Volvo, the European subsidiary of China's Geely Group) sold 202,000 light vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in Europe (29 countries) in 2022, up from 82,500 vehicles in 2021, a 145% year-on-year increase. As a reminder, Volvo sold 247,000 cars in Europe in 2022.
- The MG brand (111,000 cars) accounts for more than half of Chinese carmakers' sales. This brand currently markets seven models (HS, EHS, ZS, MG3, MG4, MG5, MARVEL), of which 55,000 are marketed as fully electric versions (BEV), 17,000 as plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and 39,000 as internal combustion (ICE). The three other Chinese brands that sold more than 20,000 vehicles in Europe in 2022 are Polestar (Geely subsidiary), with 32,000 cars sold (PHEVs) in Europe, Lynk & Co (Geely subsidiary) with 26,000 vehicles (BEVs) and DR (Chery subsidiary) with 21,000 vehicles. About ten other brands are present in the European market, but their penetration remains limited for now. It is likely that some of these brands will increase their penetration in Europe in the coming months and years, such as BYD or Ora (a subsidiary of Great Wall).
- By country, the UK is the first European market for Chinese cars (62,500 vehicles in 2022), especially due to the strong presence of MG, which was a British brand before 2005. Germany is the second largest European market (29,000 vehicles), followed by Italy (24,500 vehicles), Norway (17,000 vehicles), Sweden (16,500 vehicles) and France (16,000 vehicles). These six countries account for 82% of Chinese car sales in Europe.
- It should be noted that the countries in Eastern Europe hardly buy Chinese cars, perhaps because they are mainly electric cars and plug-in hybrids, a category of cars that is not yet very popular in these countries.

- The Fiat 500e was the most produced electric car in Europe in 2022 with 66,325 units produced in Mirafiori (Italy), up from 41,350 vehicles in 2021. This represents a 60% year-on-year increase. This model is increasingly biting into sales of the internal combustion engine version of the Fiat 500, of which 116,243 vehicles were produced in 2022 versus 132,829 in 2021 (-12,5%), but also on sales of BEVs rivals.
- It is true that the Fiat 500e is one of the very few two-door electric cars in the A-segment and it is a good fit for city small car use. It is surprising that no other carmaker is planning to launch such a model in Europe (Smart tried but failed), although Wuling is very successful in China with its Hong Guang Mini EV (572,000 sales by 2022). However, the Wuling is marketed at a much lower price: less than 10,000 euros versus just over 30,000 euros for the Fiat 500 e sold in Europe.
- Behind the Fiat 500e, the Volkswagen ID4 (63,684 units) and ID3 (52,229 units), both produced at Zwickau, are a bit disappointing, as the German carmaker had planned (and still plans) 100,000 annual sales of the ID4 and 100,000 annual sales of the ID3, but this target may not be reached until 2024 or 2025. In fourth place is the Czech-produced Skoda Enyaq (50,765 vehicles). In fifth place is the Peugeot e-208 produced in Slovakia (45,868 units), ahead of the Hyundai Kona BEV (41,950 units), the Audi Q4 E-Tron produced in Zwickau (41,412 units) and the Tesla Model Y produced in Berlin (41,354 units). The Renault Zoe produced in Flins (36,971 units) suffered a halving of its sales, but this was to be expected as the new Megane BEV produced in Douai (31,234 units), sold at almost the same price, took a large proportion of its customers.
