The 20 best-selling models in China by model (9 months 2020)
In a Chinese passenger car market down 12.1% over the first 9 months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), the Volkswagen Lavida remains the best-selling car (291,693 units), ahead of the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Bora. The German carmaker manages to place four models in the Top 20 (Lavida, Bora, Sagitar, Santana) including three among the first five places. Toyota also managed to place four (Corolla, Levin, Camry, RAV4), only one of them was in the top ten. Honda places three models (Civic, Accord, CRV). Finally, Nissan places two. The other eight places in the Top 20 are occupied by the Buick and Audi brands (one model each) and by the Chinese brands (five models including 2 Geely, 1 Great Wall, 1 Changan, 1 Wuling). It is to be noted that the only Premium model in the Chinese Top 20 in 2020 is the Audi A6.

There are very few SUVs in the Top 20 as Inovev has identified only five, against fourteen sedans, while on the whole Chinese market there are 46.5% of SUVs and 46.5% of sedans, the rest being concentrated on minivans. There is not a substantial pickup market in China, despite Great Wall's efforts to impose this type of vehicle.

The VW group remains by far the leader of the Chinese market in 2020, with a share of 18%, ahead of the groups GM (12%), Toyota (8%), Honda (8%), Geely (8%), Renault- Nissan (7%), Changan (5%), Great Wall (4%) and Hyundai-Kia (4%).

Chinese brands represent 37% of the Chinese market in 2020. The Chinese government’s target of seeing more than 40% of them is still not achieved.

The 20 best-selling models in Japan by model (9 months 2020)
In a Japanese passenger car market down 18.1% over the first nine months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), the Honda N BOX remains the best-selling car (150,820 units), ahead of the Suzuki Spacia, Daihatsu Tanto and Toyota Raize. Three cars from the “Kei cars” segment therefore occupy the first three places in the Japanese Top 20. This segment now represents 33.3% of the Japanese market and 11 models of this segment are among those in the Top 20.

On the other hand, SUVs represent a small share of registrations in Japan, since they do not exceed 18.5% of the market share, a much lower share than what we see in Europe, China or the United States.

The Japanese customers prefer small A-segment cars to SUVs. A-segment cars (or kei cars) thus represent a share three times greater in Japan than in Europe, and even more important compared to registrations made in the United States or China. As in China, pick-ups make confidential sales in Japan, but minivans/MPVs still attract the market (15% of Japanese registrations).

The Toyota group remains by far the leader of the Japanese market, with 46% market share, ahead of Honda (15%), Suzuki (14%), Nissan (12%), Mazda (4%) and Subaru (3% ). These Japanese groups represent 94% of registrations made in Japan. Imports therefore represent 6% of the Japanese market in 2020, a stable proportion compared to 2019 and very low compared to those recorded in Europe or the United States. Only China imports are even lower than Japan (5% of its registrations).

Japanese production down 24.3% over 9 months 2020
While European production is down 30.1% over the nine months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), and American production is down 23.2%, the Japanese automobile production (passenger and light utility vehicles) recorded a drop of 24.3% over this period, a level equivalent to that recorded in the United States.

Japanese production returned to its pre-crisis level only from September 2020. At this rate, 2020 could end with a drop of around 20% compared to 2019. In volume, this drop would represent a loss of 2.5 million vehicles over the whole year.

Which carmakers have managed better? Suzuki is the carmaker with the less production decrease in Japan in 2020 (-18%). Subaru is down 20%, Honda 21% and Toyota 23%. However, Toyota remains the leader in Japan with a production of 2.67 million vehicles over the cumulative nine months of 2020, representing a 48% share of the Japanese production, carried out under four different brands: Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus and Hino.

The largest production drops recorded on Japanese territory in 2020 were recorded by Isuzu (the smallest of the Japanese carmakers), Mazda and especially Renault-Nissan (represented in the country by Nissan, Mitsubishi and Infiniti) which saw its production drop by 36%. This poor result, added to what we observed in the United States, suggests a historic decline for the Renault-Nissan group in 2020.

The production of the Opel Astra has been cut by six in 15 years
The Opel Astra is a C-segment sedan that is the successor of the Opel Kadett, which dates back to 1962, and for which the German plant in Bochum was built. The Astra arrived in 1991 and used the name of the Opel Kadettproduced by Vauxhall, the other European subsidiary of the GM group. The Opel Kadett had gone through five different generations.

The Astra also had five different generations, the current having been launched in 2015. This is also the last Astra based on GM platform, since the takeover of Opel / Vauxhall by the French group PSA and as the entire future launch program of Opel was completely restructured.

Thus, the Corsa launched in 2019 is based on the PSA platform and engines also used by the Peugeot 208 launched the same year. The future Astra launched in 2021 will take over the platform and engines of the Peugeot new 308, which will be renewed the same year.

This next generation of Astra will attempt to end fifteen years of continuous decline, with a production volume decreasing from over 600,000 units annually in 2005 to 300,000 in 2016, 200,000 in 2018 and less than 100,000 in 2020.

Intended to be the most dangerous competitor of the VW Golf, it has become a very marginal sedan, competed both by rivals with greater notoriety and by SUVs which take a lot of customers from sedans. Finally, the Zafira compact MPV (1999-2019) has taken a good part of the Astra customers, and even if today the Zafira is stopped, the Astra decline continues. It will therefore not be easy for the PSA group to relaunch and sustain the Opel Astra.

US production down 23.2% over 9 months 2020
While European production shows a decrease of 30.1% over the nine months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), automobile production (passenger and light utility vehicles) in the United States has suffered less from the coronavirus crisis and the decline in international markets (the United States exports fewer vehicles than Europe), since it only fell by 23.2%, which is certainly considerable, but less than what could be expected initially. The United States has lost two million vehicles in production while Europe has lost four million.

September 2020 has returned to the level of 2019 and 2018, which let us think that the American production will stabilise in the last three months of the year. At this rate, 2020 could end with a decline of 17.5%.

Which carmakers have managed better? Tesla is the US-based carmaker which declined the less in 2020, with a drop limited to 7% in the nine months of the year. The GM group is only down 14% and this is a surprise, as the Ford group is down 25%, but remaining the largest producer in the United States (1.26 million vehicles produced over nine months 2020) ahead of GM and FCA. The FCA group limits the loss with a drop of 16%, like BMW, while Japanese and Korean carmakers are down 25% to 27%. Finally, the Renault-Nissan group is down 49%, the worst performance recorded in the country.
