2020 Geneva MotorShow - Lexus
Lexus UX 300 e

The Toyota group has launched its first mass-produced Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). The 2019 world's largest carmaker was one of the last major carmaker to not market BEVs. Toyota and its Premium subsidiary Lexus had chosen for the last twenty years to bet initially on hybrid engines vehicles (HEV - thermal engine + electric motor+ small battery), before launching plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV).

The Toyota group has sold nearly 15 million HEVs since 1997, but the new standards in Europe and the introduction of quotas in China have pushed the Japanese group to enlarge its products with BEVS.

The Lexus UX 300e, which remains aesthetically similar to the Lexus UX Hybrid, is therefore the first mass-produced BEV, not only for the Lexus brand, but also for the Toyota group.

This C-segment SUV derived from the Toyota CHR (TNGA-C platform) develops a power of 204ch, would have a range of 300 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.

2020 Geneva MotorShow - Mercedes
Mercedes GLA

Mercedes has unveiled the new generation of its C segment SUV, the GLA, which is based on the recent Class A and Class B. It therefore takes up the MFA platform but slightly increases its dimensions (like the Class A and CLA) which allows you to have a third side window, which completely changes its physiognomy since it is closer to a real SUV, while the previous GLA looked more like an enhanced Class A than a real SUV.

The new GLA will be produced at the German site in Rastatt, alongside the A Class A and B Class. It is to note that the A Class is partly produced in Rastatt and partly produced in Kecskemét in Hungary.

Inovev forecasts a volume of 150,000 sales per year, while the production of the old GLA fell to 110,000 units in 2019, after reaching a peak of 140,000 units in 2017.

The GLA is the smallest SUV in the Mercedes range which is made up of the GLC (segment D), GLE (segment E) and GLS (segment F), as well as the G-Class which falls into the category of SUVs called "rustic" like the Jeep Wrangler.

2020 Geneva MotorShow - Toyota
Toyota Yaris

Toyota unveiled the fourth generation of the Yaris (B-segment sedan), which , will be manufactured in France, as the previous ones.
It should be noted  that  France is  not  the only country  to manufacture the Yaris, since this model is also manufactured in Japan, China, Brazil, India and Mexico (in a different form).

However, France  remains the leading producer of Yaris with 46% of the total production. France, for example, provides the Yaris for all  European countries, while the other producing countries provide this model for their own markets.

The new Yaris inaugurates the new TNGA-B platform, which is derived from the modular TNGA platform but is only used for B-segment models.

Inovev expects a production volume of 250,000 Yaris IV per year at the Onnaing site. An SUV version of the Yaris is scheduled for the end of next year. It will also be manufactured at the Onnaing site.

2020 Geneva MotorShow - Renault
Renault Twingo ZE

Renault has announced that the future generation of the Twingo (A segment/sedan) planned for 2021 will also switch from thermal to BEV, using the Smart EQ Forfour platform. This version will be added to the thermal engine version marketed since 2014. Renault has announced that the future generation of the Twingo will switch entirely to BEV.

In addition, Renault plans to market the electric K-ZE in Europe under the Dacia brand from 2021.

Toyota has announced that the next generation of the Aygo (A segment/sedan) scheduled for 2021 will shift from thermal to Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).

Since last September, the Smart range has only consisted of 100% electric versions. The thermal versions are no longer produced and their sales are only made using stocks.

The PSA group plans to replace its Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1 A segment with small sedans or even small SUVs in BEV versions. Thus, a possible 1008 could succeed the 108.

As for the Volkswagen group, we know that its small sedans of segment A (VW Up, Seat Mii, Skoda Citigo) are all recently switched to electric, and it will be the same for the new ID 1 (and rebranded versions of Seat and Skoda) planned for the beginning of the years 2020.

The global market (PC + LUV) fell by 4.2% in 2019
The global automobile market (PC + LUV) fell by 4.2% in 2019 to 88.9 million units, while it had already fallen by 0.3% in 2018 to 92.9 million units. This is the second time since 2009 that the global automotive market has declined, and it is also the largest decline in this market since 2009.

The Chinese automobile market is the main reason of this global market drop, since this market fell by almost 10% in 2019 (-9.6% to be precise). However the slowdown in global growth, mainly due to trade tensions between the United States and China, led to the decline of most markets, except Europe and Brazil in particular.

Inovev forecasted in 2018 that 2019 would be a difficult year and that is what happened. The year 2020 should not see the situation really improve since the forecasts for the Chinese market will be around -5% and that the American market could post a slight decrease compared to 2019.

As for Europe, it should be impacted by the anticipated purchases made at the end of 2019 and should suffer mainly from a gloomy economic situation in Germany, which has seen the volume of its car production decrease in recent years. Brexit should also add to the difficulties of the European car market. The other countries in the rest of the world are still often recovering, some have not yet reached the bottom of sales, so it can be said that these countries will globally still decline in 2020. All in all, the global automobile market could show a fall between 2% and 3% in 2020.
