Car sales between Russia and Ukraine compared
- Automobile sales in Russia and Ukraine represented 1.75 million units (PC+LUV) in 2021, including 1.65 million for Russia and 100,000 for Ukraine. While Ukraine had 44 million inhabitants on December 31, 2021 and Russia 144 million inhabitants (i.e. approximately three times fewer Ukrainians than Russians), the automotive market is 16 times smaller than the Russian automotive market in 2021.
- This distortion is mainly due to the fact that GDP per capita is three times lower in Ukraine than in Russia. The motorization rate is thus 200 per 1,000 inhabitants in Ukraine against 300 per 1,000 inhabitants in Russia, i.e. 30% lower.
- This distortion also comes from the fact that Ukraine has been undergoing a latent civil war since 2014, in particular with the pro-Russian eastern provinces. A country in civil war, even latent, does not encourage the purchase of new cars. Finally, Ukraine has almost no vehicle assembly plants left, unlike Russia, which has a relatively powerful automotive industry, albeit made up mostly of locally established foreign brands.
- Ukraine therefore has to import all its new cars from abroad, which costs more for the customer than if the country had its own assembly plants. Ukraine mainly imports vehicles from four countries which account for almost half of its imports: Japan, Czech Republic, Germany and Great Britain.
- The current war in Ukraine should put a (temporary) halt to automobile sales in the country.

Car production in Russia and Ukraine

Car production in Russia and Ukraine
- Russian automobile production has been relatively stable since 2014, with a volume of between 1.3 million and 1.7 million units per year, most of which is sold locally. Exports represent only a very small part of production (5% or 85,000 units in 2021) mainly intended for the former republics attached to Russia during the time of the USSR, such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan , Uzbekistan, Armenia and Ukraine, these six countries accounting for 90% of Russian automotive exports. Imports represent 15% of car registrations in Russia, i.e. 250,000 units in 2021, mainly from Japan, China, Germany, the USA, Mexico and Belarus, these six countries representing 80 % of automobile imports in Russia.
- The main manufacturers established in Russia are also those which sell the most in this country and those which export the most. The leader is the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group (which owns the local brand Avtovaz) which represents 34% of the local market and 36% of the volume of cars produced in Russia, followed by the Hyundai-Kia group (23% of the Russian market and 26 % of the volume produced in Russia) and the Volkswagen group (12% of the Russian market and 11% of the volume produced in Russia).
- Ukraine, for its part, saw its production collapse in 2009 and since 2014 its production has become anecdotal. The Ukrainian automotive market (100,000 sales per year) is supplied almost entirely by imports from Europe, China, Japan and Russia. The leaders of the Ukrainian market are Renault-Nissan, Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen, as in Russia. The physiognomy of the two markets remains quite similar.

Toyota Group sold 10.5 million vehicles in 2021
- The Toyota group (Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus, Hino) has published its sales figures for the year 2021. Its worldwide sales amount to 10.5 million units including heavy goods vehicles, which represents an increase 10.1% compared to 2020, which partly offsets the 11.3% drop recorded in 2020 compared to 2019. The group, which remains the world's leading manufacturer ahead of Volkswagen (8.9 million) and Renault- Nissan (7.7 million) is therefore almost back to its 2019 level.
- The Toyota group had a better year in 2021 than these two main competitors, no doubt because it is the only one of the three not to have invested in electric motorization, continuing to offer a range of inexpensive vehicles. However, the Japanese manufacturer intends to take the plunge from 2025, since it presented around fifteen prototypes of electric vehicles at the end of 2021 which will be marketed from 2025. By brand, Toyota sold 8,855,145 vehicles, Lexus 760,012, Daihatsu 725 179 and Hino 155 212.
- The Toyota Group's global sales in 2021 break down as follows:
§ The United States is its largest market, with 2.33 million vehicles, or 22% of its global sales.
§ Japan becomes its second market, with 2.06 million vehicles, or 20% of its global sales.
§ China is its third largest market, with 1.66 million vehicles, or 16% of its global sales.
§ Europe is its fourth largest market, with 996,000 vehicles, or 9.5% of its global sales.
- For the first time, the Toyota group is both the sales leader in the United States and in Japan.

Volkswagen Group sold 8.9 million vehicles in 2021
- The Volkswagen group sold 8,882,000 vehicles worldwide in 2021, representing a drop of 4.5% compared to 2020 and 17.2% compared to 2019, due to the shortage of electronic chips according to the manufacturer. This is the lowest figure for ten years. Its sales nevertheless increased by 15.6% in North America last year, to 908,400 units (including 671,800 in the United States) and by 5.1% in South America, to 514,600 units, but they declined in Europe (-2.7%) and China (-14.1%). Sales fell to 3,518,700 units in Europe and 3,304,800 units in China.
- Two of the group's brands were particularly affected. Volkswagen saw its passenger car sales fall by 8.1% worldwide (mainly in China) and its light commercial vehicle sales by 3.2%. They fell to 4,896,900 units and 359,500 units respectively. Skoda saw global sales fall 12.6% last year to 878,200 units, mainly due to a slump in China as the Jetta brand eventually replaced Skoda in that market. Audi saw its own stagnate (-0.7%) at 1,680,500 units. Conversely, Seat/Cupra (+10.3%) and Porsche (+10.9%) saw their sales increase, to 470,500 units and 301,900 units respectively.
- The three luxury brands (Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini) totaled 23,100 units (including 14,600 Bentleys and 8,400 Lamborghinis), representing an increase of 23.6% compared to 2020. MAN truck brands (151 000 units) and Scania (90,400 units) grouped in the Traton division also grew strongly (+27.8% and +25.4% respectively).
