Global registrations up 10 months

Over the first ten months of 2012, global vehicle registrations (PC + LUV) grew by 5.5% in comparison with the first ten months of 2011:

-Passenger cars (PC) rose by 6.8%

-Light commercial vehicles (LUV) rose by 1.9%

Geography of markets:

PC: all markets rise except Europe, Turkey and Korea

LUV: all markets rise except Europe, Turkey and Korea but also China and Brazil

It is to be noted that in 2011, global vehicle registrations increased by 4.6% (in comparison with the twelve months of 2010), despite the terrible tsunami in Japan and severe flooding in Thailand.

Ford announces the launch of 8 new models in the Indian market by 2015

Since 2010, Ford sales in India fluctuate between 6,000 and 7,000 units per month, on average. The Ford Figo (an old generation of

Ford Fiesta in Europe launched in 2002),  accounts for most of the sales.

The Figo’s sales represents nearly 82% of the Indian local production plant in Chennai.

In a growing market, the objective of Ford is to support the Indian market demand by expanding its product range but also by getting the manufacturer out of its ultra dependency on Figo.

This is the reason why Ford announced a plan to launch eight new models by 2015.

This plan targets the compact car segment and will begin in 2013 with the commercialisation of the EcoSport, a B-segment SUV.

SAIC will sell 4 million vehicles in 2012

-Shanghai GM joint venture between SAIC (the first Chinese manufacturer) and GM (the first American manufacturer), sold 1.14 million units in the first ten months of 2012 and is expected to reach its target for the whole of 2012, aimed to 1.38 million units.
Shanghai-GM-Wuling(JV between SAIC and Wuling GM) sold 1.01 million vehicles over the first ten months of 2012.

-On its side, Shanghai VW joint venture between SAIC and VW (first European carmaker), has sold 1 million vehicles over the first ten months of 2012.

-The own brands, SAIC Roewe and MG, sourced from the British takeover of MG Rover in 2005, totaled 153,484 sales in the same period.

-For the full year 2012, the group SAIC will therefore sell 4 million vehicles i.e. more than a manufacturer such as PSA.

Dispute on “supercredits” for low-emission vehicles
-The EU is in the process to set automotive emissions targets for the period from 2015 to 2020. The EU objective is to decrease the average CO2 emission to 95 g/km.
-In order to incite carmakers to develop  very low emission cars such as electric vehicles, the EU has created in 2008 “supercredits”. The principle is as follows. Each passenger vehicle emitting less than 50 g/km of CO2 will  account for 3.5 vehicles in 2014 and in 1.5 in 2015 in the calculation process of the average (with a limit of 20 000 vehicles by carmaker). For a same collection of vehicles,  the calculated CO2 emission average is lower when applying the “supercredits” rule than without applying it.
- The German  automotive association (VDA) has stated that  a still more efficient measure would be to replace the 1.3 factor planned for 2014 by a 2.5 factor, and increase the limit of 20 000 vehicles. This would give a higher value to their efforts to develop green cars.
-The European “Greens” do not share the point of view of VDA. They highlight that favouring such targets is a loophole for carmakers to escape the average 95 g/km set figure. Mathematically indeed, the real target which would be calculated without “supercredits” would be higher than the targeted 0.95 g/km.
-This dispute happens at a moment when German carmakers develop their offer of electric vehicles, but however at very small volume (conversely to France).

Japanese carmakers will increase their facilities in North America

- Japanese carmakers are increasing their industrial presence in North America in order to offset the strong yen and catch-up production lost after the earthquake of 2011 in Japan.

- Over the next three years, three new plants will be built in Mexico (Mazda, Nissan, Honda), while two other sites in the United States will be expanded (Subaru, Mitsubishi).

- This wave of expansion, the largest since 2000-2003, focuses on increasing the capacities of plants  building small cars or luxury cars. In the past 2000-2003 wave, carmakers had focused their expansion on manufacture of SUV and pick-up.

- Furthermore, additional capacities are now set up primarily in Mexico, while the United States and Canada were privileged before 2003.
