European exports leaded by German carmakers

European exports (EU) increased significantly between 2009 and 2012.

   Quantities aggregated on three major export areas (U.S., Russia, China) have increased from 1.435 million to 1.985 million units in three years.

USA: from 651,000 units to 867,000 in three years.

Russia: from 514,000 units to 568,000 in three years.

China: 270,000 units to 550,000 in three years.

 

85% of European exports are sourced from Germany  (Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Opel, Ford and Porsche).

 

The remaining share of  exports (15%) is split between French, Italian, British, Swedish and Asian manufacturers located in Europe.

 

Exports to USA, Russia and China represents 75% of EU exports in 2012.

Volkswagen group sold 9,07 millions vehicles in 2012

The Volkswagen Group sold 9.07 million vehicles worldwide in 2012 (+11.2%) compared to 2011 (i.e  862,000 vehicles added). Volkswagen comes now in third position behind Toyota  and GM regarding the quantities sold in 2012.

The group increased its sales (580,000 units) by 34% (compared to 2011) in the United States, 8.2% in South America and 25% in China (2.81 million units). In North America, Volkswagen sold 840,000 vehicles last year, up by 26%.

Its sales have remained stable over the  European market (- 0.3%; 3.67 million units), but fell by 6.5% in Western Europe excluding Germany to 1.85 million units.

With the exception of Seat (- 8.3% to 321,000 units), all brands of the Volkswagen Group increased their sales last year. The Volkswagen brand increased its sales by 12.7% to 5.74 million units. The Volkswagen brand sold 2.20 million units in the Chinese market, up by 25%. Audi has sold 1.46 million vehicles (+11.7%). Skoda sold 939,000 vehicles (+6.8%). The Utilituy vehicle branch of  VW sold 550,000 vehicles (+4.1%). Porsche has sold 141,000 vehicles (+18.7% - note: results of this carmaker are consolidated into into the Group's results since August 2012. Bentley has sold 8510 vehicles.

Lexus launches the third generation of Lexus IS

- Lexus (Toyota's luxury subsidiary) introduced the third generation of the IS, which will be marketed in 2013. The previous model dated back from 2005. It had a rather discreet career .


- It is to be noted that the IS model is a segment D sedan. It competes directly with the  segment D Premium cars:  BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class and Volvo S60.


- The exterior styling of the new Lexus IS has an aggressive appearance (grille, taillights) and its line highlights a certain sportiness, probably to get closer to the style of the BMW 3 Series, its direct competitor .


- The new Lexus will showcase a new hybrid (gasoline-electric) engine missing so far on this model. In 2013, the entire Lexus range vehicles will be available equipped with hybrid engines: from the CT to the RX  including therefore the IS, GS and LS.

Renault unveils its new crossover compact Captur

- Renault presented on January 11 the first official photos of the Captur, the new crossover compact and urban (based on Clio IV) vehicle which will be sold in the spring and which replaces the Modus. It will compete with the Peugeot 2008 and Nissan Juke.


- The Captur will be initially produced at the Renault plant in Valladolid (this plant has just stopped to  manufacture the  Modus and therefore has unused capacity). It will be sold throughout Europe in the wake of the Geneva Motor Show. It may subsequently be manufactured also in Brazil.


- The exterior styling of the Captur emphasizes the uniqueness and robustness of the vehicle. Its interior should be very similar to the Clio IV’s. The vehicle is 4.12 meters long and offers an optional two-tone paint.


As for engines, the Captur should receive the most powerful engines of the Clio IV: the petrol 100hp and 90hp 0.9 TCe, as well the diesel 90hp and 110hp 1.5. in addition it may also receive the  1.2 TCe115hp petrol engine currently not mounted on the Clio IV.

Chevrolet renews the Corvette at its 60th birthday

Chevrolet renews the Corvette at the occasion of  its 60th anniversary. The first Corvette was born actually in January 1953. The new model presented this week at the Detroit Motorshow is the 7th generation of Corvette (code: C7).

The redesign of this model as an objective to boost sales of this legendary sports car which fell to less than 20,000 units annually since 2009. The Corvette has experienced three peak sales: at the end of year 70 (49,000 sales in 1978), the mid-80s (46,000 sales in 1985) and the mid-2000s (42,000 sales in 2006).

The new 2013 version highlights a more aggressive style, with some likeness with  the recent Ferrari F12 and Dodge Viper.

The vehicle keeps its 6.2-liter engine (no downsizing) but with a power increased from 430hp (Corvette C6) to 450hp (Corvette C7). For the first time, the Corvette is equipped with a seven gears gearbox, such as the Porsche 911.

Since 1953, Chevrolet sold 1.55 million Corvette.
