The Algerian car market could increase by 10% in 2013

The Algerian car market has experienced strong growth since 2010. This year, 300,000 vehicles were registered (a record for the time), and 330,000 in 2011 and 437,000 in 2012. The Algerian government expects 480,000 vehicles in 2013. Sales effectively increased by almost 10% (9.6%) in the first half of this year.

The sharp increase in car sales in Algeria resulted from the renewal of an ageing park, substantial increases in wages that benefited all workers, and the reduction of import duties for new vehicles coupled with the establishment of new funds for the purchase of vehicles.

Traditionally, French automobile brands are the most sold on the Algerian market, accounting for this year more than 33% market share.

Renault is the market leader with 49,468 vehicles sold in the first half of 2013, followed by Peugeot with 48,624 sales, Dacia (23,953 sales), Hyundai (20,486 sales), Toyota (19,858 sales), Volkswagen (16 592 sales) Seat (13,573 sales), Chevrolet (10,984 sales) and Citroën (9809 sales).

The most popular models were the Dacia Logan, Peugeot 301, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Seat Ibiza. But the new Renault Symbol (With a Logan chassis) is making great progress. Before it being produced locally, it will be imported from Turkey.

BMW will launch its first compact MPV by 2014

If compact minivan general brands saw their sales decline for several years, premium brands saw their sales grow, like the Mercedes B-Class, which had sold 160,000 copies in 2012 against 80,000 in 2011. BMW and Audi therefore prepare their own compact MPV to respond to Mercedes B-Class

BMW will launch by 2014 its first compact minivan, named Family Tourer. This model will be able to accommodate up to 7 passengers (like a Renault Grand Scenic or Citroen Grand Picasso) and borrow the platform of the future recreational vehicle X1 launched in 2015.

The Family Tourer will be the first BMW model to have a front-wheel drive architecture and not driven by rear well drive or all-wheel drive. Today only the Mini from the BMW Group is equipped with front wheel drive.

In addition to the Family Tourer launched in 2014 and the future X1 launched in 2015, BMW plans to launch an X2 Coupe (derived from the 1st Series ) by 2014 and an alternative trunk sedan of the  1st Series in 2015 (competitor of the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes CLA).

The new generation of the 1st Series is scheduled for 2018 (in a 5-door version) and 2019 (in a 3-door version), the current 1-Series dating back from 2011.
