With Mitsubishi, Renault-Nissan would become the third carmaker in the world

The Renault-Nissan group is in 2015 the fourth carmaker worldwide, behind Toyota, Volkswagen and General-Motors.
Mitsubishi is the 14th World carmaker, behind BMW, Daimler and Mazda.

If the Mitsubishi Renault-Nissan operation  is validated in October2016, the European-Japanese group would become the third carmaker in the world behind Toyota and Volkswagen.

Here are the rankings for the first four months of 2016:

• 1. Volkswagen (3.34 million sales)

• 2. Toyota (3.21 million sales)

• 3. GM (3.14 million sales, including GM-Wuling)

• 4. Renault-Nissan (2.77 million sales)

• 5. Hyundai-Kia (2.52 million sales)

The contribution of Mitsubishi should allow Renault-Nissan to overpass GM and Hyundai-Kia and approach the two leaders Volkswagen and Toyota. In the first 4 months of 2016, the European-Japanese group Renault-Nissan including Mitsubishi totals 3.15 million vehicles sales (into which 0.38 million Mitsubishi).

Imports and exports of the Turkish automotive industry in 2015

Turkey produced 1.28 million vehicles in 2015 (+ 6.7% over 2014 and + 42% compared to 2005). Six plants for passenger cars and light trucks are present in Turkey, besides trucks and buses plants . These six plants, located in the east of the country, produce models for nine different brands (Fiat by itself  produces for 4 brands).

Since 2008, Renault, which produces here most of the Clio sold in Europe, is the largest producer in the country, while PSA has just stopped its production in the Fiat plant in May 2016. Fiat, formerly leader, has steadily declined since early 2000.
The most important increase is Hyundai’s. This group has multiplied by seven its production in Turkey between 2005 and 2015.

Into 1.28 million vehicles produces in Turkey in 2015, 325,000 were sold in Turkey, 156,000 in UK, 154 000 in France, 101,000 in Germany, 99,000 in Italy and the rest in other countries of the world.

Brexit will affect Turkish production negatively. Inovev has revised its forecast in order to take on-board the Brexit.
Sales in the UK will likely decrease and, as the UK is a big export destination for Turkey, Turkey production had to be lowered from the level of before-
Brexit. And no production can be transferred from UK to Turkey as Turkey has not the capacities to absorb such a transfer.

Regarding imports, Germany is the main source in Turkey 2015 (210 000 vehicles), ahead of Spain (96,000 units), Great Britain (43 000 units) and France (41 000 units). Turkey imported a total of 650,000 vehicles in 2015 (67% share) and exported 960 000 (75% of production).

Citroën unveils the new generation of the C3 (segment B)

Citroën unveiled the third generation of the sedan C3  (B segment). This new C3 is 5cm longer(3,99m) and 4cm lower (1,48m) than the previous generation launched in 2009. The new C3 uses the PF1 platform of the Peugeot 208, because at the time of  its development, the CMP1 platform was not yet finalized. The CMP1 platform will be used on the next generation of the C3 (scheduled for 2022).

The new C3 comes out equipped with the most recent 3 and 4  cylinders engines  mounted on Peugeot 208:
petrol 1.0l -  68hp, 1.2l -  82ch/110hp and  diesel 1.6l - 75hp/100hp.

It will be produced in Trnava in Slovakia and not in Poissy in France. The Trnava plant has now a capacity of 400,000 vehicles per year. It will produce 250,000 Peugeot 208 and  150,000 Citroën C3 annually. In 2015, 240 000 Peugeot 208 and 130 000 Citroen C3 were sold. These figures highlight that the Trnava plant capacity could be saturated in 2017, especially if European market continues to increase. It should then be needed to increase the capacity of the plant.

The arrival of the Citroen C3 in Trnava has already triggered the transfer of production of the new C3 Picasso to the GM plant in Zaragoza, Spain (the new C3 Picasso will be unveiled this summer). Opel Meriva and Citroen C3 Picasso now share Indeed now the same PF1 platform. Both models will be manufactured at the factory in Zaragoza.

Market and production forecasts for Turkey in 2016-2017

The Turkish market has progressed chaotically from 2011 to now. In 2016, it should approach 750,000 vehicles, and then fall down to 700,000 vehicles in 2017. These volumes, however, remain much higher than those recorded between 2005 and 2010 (300 000 to 500,000 units per year).

Turkey can be deemed as  an emerging country, as it is a country with low car ownership  compared to the European Union (150 cars per 1 000 inhabitants against 550 for the EU), despite a market having grown by 42% from 2005 to 2015.

Turkey has recently faced two difficult periods, one in 2008-2009, following the global economic crisis and its consequences onto the European automotive markets, the other since 2013, following the domestic political crisis and foreign policy tension on its eastern borders (Syria-Iraq).

Turkish production is largely dependent on European markets since it exports nearly 75% of its production to this region.
Turkish production takes at the moment full advantage of the strong increase in the European market recorded in 2015 and 2016.
But the Brexit could jeopardize this growth (fewer sales in Britain, that country being the first commercial prospects of Turkey on automobiles) and the Turkish production could fall down to 1.3 million vehicles in 2017 (from a peak of 1.4 million vehicles produced in 2016).
