Tesla will launch a fourth electrical model in 2020
The Californian manufacturer Tesla, which produces electric vehicles at its Fremont site ( a former GM-Toyota plant) will launch a fourth model in 2020.

Today, the Tesla range consists of the Model S (F segment sedan, launched in 2012) and the model X (F segment SUV launched in 2015). The third model, called Model 3, will be launched in 2018.

The fourth model will be launched in 2020. It will be a D-segment SUV, derived from the Model 3 and could be called Model Y.

This fourth model will allow Tesla to move closer to its target of 500,000 cars produced at the Fremont site (compared to 80,000 in 2016 and 50,000 in 2015), i.e. the maximum capacity of Tesla’s  American plant.

According to Inovev, the three models marketed in 2020 could  add up to 215 000 annual units and the contribution of the fourth model could enable Tesla to reach 300 000 units by 2021 or 2022. The target of 500 000 units annually  remains ambitious With the product plan defined today by the Californian manufacturer, Tesla will have to exploit new growth markets more deeply (China?)  and complete its range by other new models to increase its sales.

The Most Produced B Segment SUV in 2016

The most produced segment B SUV in the world in 2016 is the Chevrolet Trax (334,000 units). This model launched in 2012 is currently produced in three different countries: South Korea (186,000 units) for Asian markets outside China, Mexico (110,000 units) for markets in North and South America, and finally China (38,000 units) for the Chinese market. The Chevrolet Trax is no longer distributed in Europe since  GM  cancelled the Chevrolet brand on  the continent.

The success of this model is all the more spectacular as its Opel badged  variant (Mokka) makes for  175,000 additional units (half made in Korea and the other half in Europe).

In total, Chevrolet Trax and Opel Mokka thus accounted for nearly 510,000 units in 2016, compared with an overall B segment SUV market close to 3 million units last year. Both models should be replaced in 2019.

In Europe (29 countries), the most produced segment B SUV in 2016 is the Renault Captur (225,000 units) ahead of the Peugeot 2008 (203,000 units) and the Jeep Renegade (184,000 units).

The Captur and 2008 are sold mainly in Europe, while the Renegade is exported largely to North America (60% of its production). It is surprising that the Volkswagen group has not yet invested this market, but  they plan to  do so  in 2017 and 2018,  with  VW, Seat and Skoda brand  launches in this segment.

Breakdown of Opel Astra European Production

It is interesting to observe the successive transfers of production of the Opel Astra in Europe  from 2005  to  today ,and its scheduled transfers until 2021, the date of the launch of the next generation Astra.

The Opel Astra  is the  successor  of the Opel Kadett(C segment sedan ) which was manufactured exclusively on the German site of Bochum,   purpose built for its production . In 1991, the Astra was produced in Germany (Bochum), Belgium (Antwerp) and the United Kingdom (Ellesmere). As of 2009, the Astra was also produced in Poland (Gliwice). Opel's decline in the European continent has led to a significant decline in Astra's sales since 1999.

From 700,000 units in 1999,Astra's sales fell to 500,000 in 2005 and 300,000 In 2009 and 235,000 in 2014. In 2016, Astra's production rose to 300,000 units, the level for 2009, but we are still far from the figures for 1999 or 2005.

As a result, production on the Antwerp site ceased in 2010 (which led to the closure of the plant) and Bochum in 2014 (which  also led to the closure of the plant). The British site of Ellesmere continued its activity but the management of Opel has already scheduled its closure for 2021. The Polish site of Gliwice will remain the only site to make this model as of  the next generation Astra scheduled for 2021. In conclusion, the Opel Astra is now produced on a single site, like the Opel Kadett in its time

PSA Group is interested in acquiring Proton
The Chinese manufacturer Geely has announced that it has stopped negotiations with the troubled  Malaysian firm Proton  (its factories are operating at 25% of their capacity currently). The PSA group would now be interested in taking  over Proton. PSA wants to expand its sales in Southeast Asia and the Proton plants located in Malaysia could be a  manufacturing  and export center of vehicles for this  entire region.

Proton today has a plant in Shah Alam (suburb of Kuala Lumpur) and another more modern one located in TanjongMalim (north of Kuala Lumpur) called Proton City. The two plants have a capacity of 150,000 units each,  i.e. a total of 300,000, while current production does not exceed 75,000 units in 2016, due to  a sharp reduction in demand for Proton models over the past three years .

If PSA took over the Proton brand, it would benefit from its two factories in Malaysia, and  a third plant in the United Kingdom (Hethel), which manufactures Lotus sports cars, since Proton owns Lotus.

Inovev points out that Proton also  sold cars in China between 2010 and 2016. These were compact sports sedans sold under the Lotus brand and manufactured by the Chinese manufacturer Youngman. Youngman manufactured nearly 200,000 of these Lotus sedans over  six years.

Used Car Market in France is 2.6 times larger than the New Car Market
The French used PC market  returned to its 2007 level , i.e.  5.6 million units, which is 2.8 times the French  new PC  market .

Each year, the French used PC  market oscillates between 5 and 6 million units, while the French new PC  market oscillates between 1.8 million and 2.2 million units. The French used PC market had declined in 2008 and 2009, due to the financial crisis and the scrapping incentives that had been introduced during this period to support the new  car market.

Regarding the French used LCV  market , in 2016 it has regained the record level of the years 2010 and 2011, i.e. 800 000 units, which is only  2 times the French new LCV market.

Each year, the French  used LCV market oscillates between 750 000 and 800 000 units, while the French new LCV  market oscillates between 360 000 and 460 000 units.

In total, in 2016, the  used PC +LCV market   in France is at  6.4 million units, ie 2.64 times the  new PC+LCV market.. This proportion  remains  stable since 2007.
