European manufacturers used 85% of their capacity in 2017
Overcapacity in Europe (Europe 29 + Turkey) decreased further in 2017, falling to 15% of all European capacitya utilization rate of 85%, the same rate as in 2007 which had been the best of the past decade. This good figure is explained by:

1. The rise in the European market, which continued in 2017 (+ 3.3%), allowing more vehicles to be produced last year.
2. No new factories construction in Europe in 2017, and existing facilities responding without difficulty to demand.
3. European exports remaining at a good level in 2017 thanks to a world market up 2.3%.
4. Recent plant closures in Europe yielding the expected results (capacity reduction).

If the European market continues to increase in 2018 and the level of European exports is maintained (a priori, the world car market should continue to grow this year, of the order of 2 to 3%), overcapacity of European car factories this year should drop to only 14% of all European capacities, the lowest figure recorded in the last twenty years.

Renault group (Renault-Dacia-Samsung, which now  also includes  the Russian brand Lada) is one of the two components of the Renault-Nissan group with the Nissan group (Nissan-Datsun-Infiniti) which now also includes the Mitsubishi brand. The Renault group has published its sales figures for the year 2017. Its global sales amounted to 3.76 million units, an increase of 8.5%. 2018 Geneva MotorShow - Jaguar
Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar introduces the new i-Pace SUV, its first 100% electric model. Directly competing with the Tesla Model 3, the i-Pace is more like a raised four-door sedan than a real SUV.

This model will be manufactured at Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria, at a rate of 20,000 units per year.

Jaguar said the US would be the first outlet for this vehicle (California being a major market for electric cars), but that China and Europe would also be targeted markets.
-The Jaguar i-Pace (480km range) uses a new platform that will serve as a basis for future electric models of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

2018 Geneva MotorShow - Kia
Kia Ceed

Kia introduced the third generation of its C segment sedan exclusively sold and produced in Europe, the Ceed.

This new generation is based on the K2 platform shared by the recent Hyundai i30, also sold and produced in Europe.

This new Kia sedan competes with the C-segment sedans of generalist brands such as VW Golf, Renault Mégane, Peugeot 308, Citroën C4, Ford Focus, Opel Astra, Fiat Tipo, Seat Leon ... and Hyundai i30.

The new Kia Ceed will be, as previously, produced in Zilina (Slovakia) and will be marketed at the end of the second quarter of 2018.

Inovev expects a production of 100,000 units per year in Slovakia of the third generation, given a European market that is expected to slow down in the coming years and which favors sales of SUVs.

2018 Geneva MotorShow - Mercedes
Mercedes A Class

Mercedes presents the fourth generation of its C-segment sedan, the A-Class. This model rivals the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3, which will be renewed next year. The new model is expected to sell 250,000 copies a year, given a European market that is expected to stabilize.

The new Mercedes A-Class is based on the MFA2 platform (which is an evolution of the MFA) and its engines will be as follows: a 1330cc 4-cylinder gasoline engine developing 163 hp (Renault engine), a 2000cc 4-cylinder gasoline engine developing 224 hp, a 4 cylinder diesel 1500cc developing 116hp (Renault engine).

The new Mercedes A-Class will be produced in the German factory in Rastatt. It will soon be supported by new generations of Class B and CLA, as well as an SUV called GLB.

Mercedes CLS

Mercedes introduces the third generation of the CLS which is between the E-Class and the S-Class in the manufacturer's range. This model competes with the Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé.

The new CLS will try to boost the sales of this family of models which peaked in 2005 (first generation), with a peak production of 53,000 units, but then experienced a clear slump (30,000 units in 2014, 20 000 units in 2017), due to the decline of sports-oriented sedans (the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series are experiencing the same trend) in the face of competition from SUVs that are attracting more customers, and the traditional sedans that have recently been renewed (Mercedes E-Class, BMW Series 5). This model will not benefit from the V8 engines that will be exclusive to AMG GT Sedan. The AMG GT is actually the sporting version of the CLS. Inovev expects a production of 25,000 annual units of this new CLS.

Mercedes AMG GT 4 Door Coupé

Mercedes presents the 4-door version of the AMG GT, which until now has been available only in coupe and cabriolet versions.

This new model - that competes a little with the Mercedes CLS presented in the same show - is one of the fastest sedans in the world (300 km/h).

BMW will launch an 8 Series Gran Coupe next year, capable of competing with the AMG sedan. A concept anticipating this Series 8 Gran Coupe is presented at the same show.

Inovev forecasts a production volume of 2,500 units per year of the new AMG GT 4-door, which will be marketed from summer 2018.
