- We have seen in our previous analyzes that the VW Golf was the most produced car in Germany (and Europe) and that the Toyota Yaris was the most produced car in France. Which is the most produced car in Spain?
- This is the VW Polo (B segment sedan), as for many years. The plant in Pamplona (northern Spain) is the only site that manufactures this model in the European Union. There is a factory in Russia (Kaluga) that manufactures a tri-body version of the Polo but for local demand only. Polo is also made in China, India, Brazil and even Algeria, for local demand.
- 283,000 VW Polo were produced in Europe in 2017 (vs. 323,000 in 2016). The drop in the production volume of Polo in 2017.
- (-40,000 units) is due to the change of generation that took place during the year. Volumes should return to the 300,000 unit level in 2018.
- In Europe 264,000 Polos were sold (compared to 297,000 in 2016). Even with a drop in sales of 33,000 units last year, the Polo remains the third best-selling car on this continent, behind the VW Golf and Renault Clio, but ahead of the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa. However, it is possible that the new VW T-Roc and T-Cross (B-segment SUVs) could take customers away from the Polo in the near future.

PSA Kaluga plant has started production of Jumpy and Expert
- As announced in the December 25, 2017 Auto-Analysis , the production of Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert commercial vehicles started in March 2018 at the Russian PSA site in Kaluga. These vehicles are intended exclusively for the Russian market, and possibly for the markets of the Socialist Republics of the former USSR. The planned production volumes will nevertheless be clearly insufficient to really revive the production of the site which has been idling for several years.
- Installed capacities of 125,000 units per year are very underutilized since the production volume of the site did not even reach 16,000 units in 2017 (Citroën C4 and Peugeot 408), against 17,415 in 2016. The site has never reached 50,000 units per year, even including the models of Mitsubishi, which owns half of the site and whose production volume (Outlander, Pajero) currently accounts for almost 90% of the site's activity. Kaluga’s utilization rate does not even reach 15%.
- The start of production of the Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert in Kaluga took place just when PSA announced the transfer of several thousands of these models each year from Valenciennes in France to Luton in England. We are witnessing a scattering of the production of Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert without being certain that the demand will be high enough for three different production sites to be needed. The Valenciennes site has manufactured less than 115,000 units of these models in 2017, while the capacity of this plant is 180,000 per year, and a number of units have been exported to Great Britain ( 13,000 units) and to Russia (1,000 units)., The PSA Group expects an increase in the European market for light commercial vehicles in the coming years to compensate these production transfers.

Which manufacturers are most affected by the slow down of the European market
- As the European VP market (29 countries) slows abruptly in 2018, after four years of uninterrupted growth, almost returning to the best levels achieved between 2004 and 2008, which manufacturers are the most affected by this new situation ?
- According to the figures Inovev has the most impacted manufacturers are mainly those who sell most on the British market down sharply in 2018: Jaguar Land Rover (Tata group) drops 13.9% on the cumulative 3 month 2018, Opel / Vauxhall fell by 9.4% and Ford by 5.6%.
- Other manufacturers also experienced sales decline, including the Fiat -Chrysler group (-4.0%) which suffers from a weak Italian market, and the BMW group (-1.5%) which suffers from having many big volume models at end of life. The Daimler group‘s sales are stagnating (+ 0.1%), like the PSA group (+ 0.1%) which would have progressed without the impact of the Opel / Vauxhall decline.
- The Geely (Volvo) and Renault-Nissan groups performed better (+ 0.5% and + 0.8% respectively) without being spectacular. The best scores are achieved by the groups Volkswagen (+ 5.2%), Hyundai-Kia (+ 6.3%) and Toyota (+ 8.8%), which benefit from new B and C segment SUVs of all of which correspond precisely to current demand: Volkswagen T-Roc, Seat Arona, Skoda Karoq, Hyundai Kona, Kia Stonic, Toyota CHR.

- The Toyota Avensis (D segment sedan) produced in England and the Toyota Verso (C-segment minivan) produced in Turkey will not be replaced. With the growth of C and D segment SUVs, D-segment sedan, and C-segment minivan market share continues to decline in Europe. The Japanese manufacturers, that occupy only 10% of the European market have to focus on segments where they can compete with European automakers, such as B and C segment sedans, or C and D segment SUVs.
- Honda has already discontinued its Accord Sedan and its MPVs, Mazda has removed its Mazda 5 minivan. Even Nissan, which is allied with Renault, has no more D segment sedans, or minivans in Europe. As for Mitsubishi and Subaru, they focus on SUVs. Suzuki has never offered a D-segment sedan or minivan.
- In 2020, Toyota's production in Europe will therefore be concentrated on the Yaris ( B segment), on the Auris (C segment sedan), on the CHR (segment C SUV) and on a fourth model recently announced by the manufacturer that will be manufactured in France alongside the Yaris from 2020 and which could be a segment B SUV.
- Toyota sold 750,000 vehicles in Europe in 2017 plus 40,000 in Turkey and produced 520,000 in Europe plus 280,000 in Turkey. Toyota imports very few vehicles in Europe, and exports very little from this continent as well.

- Of a total of 3.2 million new passenger cars sold in India in 2017 (+ 9.6% compared to 2016), Suzuki placed nine models in the Top 15, including five in the first five places. The best-selling model remains the Suzuki Alto (258,000 units against 245,000 in 2016) which is one of the cheapest cars on the market. Following are the Suzuki Dzire (225 000 units against 202 000 in 2016), Suzuki Baleno (175 000 units against 107 000 in 2016), Suzuki Swift (167 000 units against 169 000 in 2016) and Suzuki R Wagon (167 000 units against 173 000 in 2016).
- Suzuki traditionally occupies half of the Indian market. It's the biggest market for Suzuki, far ahead of Japan. Competitors who have arrived on the Indian market over the past 20 years have not been able to overcome Suzuki's dominant position, despite major efforts to design small, low-margin models (Tata Nano, Renault Kwid, Hyundai i10), as the Indian market is primarily a small car market (A and B segments).
- A Segment accounts for 37% of the Indian market in 2017 and B segment 43%, so 80% overall for these two entry-level segments. The C segment makes up only 14% of the Indian market and the D market less than 6%.
- SUVs are still a minority in the Indian market (22% market share against 40% in China), and minivans an even smaller minority (8% market share). Sedans are still at 70% of the market.
