World share of automatic gearboxes

World share of automatic gearboxes
- Automatic transmissions account for 55% of the global market in 2017, compared to 45% in 2007. Largely in majority in the US market since the early 1960s, cars equipped with automatic boxes flooded the Japanese market in the 70s. Even today the United States and Japan remain the most equipped markets in automatic gearboxes (95% and 90% respectively ). The Chinese market that started in the 2000s quickly became the third market equipped with automatic transmission at 60%.
- Europe has always had a certain reluctance to adopt this type of equipment (price, consumption, maintenance) but there has been a real evolution over the last ten years, since in 2017, nearly 30% of the cars sold in Europe are equipped with an automatic gearbox, vs. 15% in 2007. In France, this rate even tripled during the same period.
- Here are the different types of automatic boxes today:
1. classic automatic gearbox with a torque converter. This is the most common (30% of the world market).
2. robotised double clutch gearbox with two half-boxes placed in parallel.
3. single clutch robotised gearbox with a clutch driven by electromechanical actuators.
4. CVT gearbox with belt and pulleys to modulate the transmission ratio.
5. boxes specific to hybrid cars (variator) or electric cars (reducer ).

Automobile production in Germany stagnates at 6 million units since 2011

Automobile production in Germany stagnates at 6 million units since 2011
- Automobile production (PC+LCV ) in Germany has stagnated since 2011. Relocations to Hungary (Audi, Mercedes), to Slovakia (Volkswagen), to Poland (Volkswagen, Opel) or to Portugal (Volkswagen) could be part of the explanation for this stagnation.
- Another possible explanation is the gradual transfer of German car exports to China (mainly BMWs and Mercedes) and to North America (mainly Mercedes C-Class, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q5).
- However, when we look at the figures by manufacturer, we see that the explanation is quite different because the Daimler (Mercedes) and BMW groups ‘volume has increased steadily since 2011.
- In reality, car production in Germany stagnates since 2011 not only because dieselgate has cut the production of the Volkswagen Group by a hundred thousand vehicles a year in 2016 and 2017, but mainly because of the continuous decline in the volume of production of US manufacturers in Germany, namely Ford and GM (Opel).
- Ford and GM lost 150,000 vehicles each between 2011 and 2017, while Daimler gained 240,000 and BMW 180,000 during the same period. For its part, Volkswagen lost 130,000 vehicles between 2011 and 2017.

The World's Top 15 Electric Cars (BEV + PHEV) in Q1 2018
- 说明
The World's Top 15 Electric Cars (BEV + PHEV) in Q1 2018
- Of the 305,000 electric cars (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) sold worldwide in the first quarter of 2018, China has bought 123,000 units, Europe 87,000 units, the United States 55,000 units and Japan 20 000 units.
- Renault-Nissan group consolidates its first place as electric car manufacturer, in front of the Tesla, BYD, BMW and Volkswagen groups. Renault-Nissan is benefiting from the ramp up of the new Nissan Leaf, which became the world's best-selling electric car in the first quarter of 2018. At the same time, Tesla is having some difficulties in the manufacturing process of the new Model 3, which is only the 11th largest selling model in the world, whereas it should be in the Top 3.
- By brand, Tesla remains leader in front of BYD that it precedes by only 750 units . BMW is in third place, thanks to the i3 but also to its wide range of rechargeable hybrid models (Series 2, Series 3, Series 5, Series 7, X5). Nissan is fourth thanks to the Leaf. Then follows BAIC (which benefits from the success of the E-Series model, the world's second best-selling electric model) and Volkswagen (which has a wide range of plug-in hybrid models).
- By model, the Nissan Leaf takes the lead in electric car sales, thanks to the new generation introduced last year. Then follow the BAIC E-Series (sold exclusively in China), the Toyota Prius PHEV, the BYD Song (sold exclusively in China), the Tesla Model S, the JAC EV (sold exclusively in China) and the Tesla Model X.
