Trump's economic sanctions threaten PSA and Renault in Iran
- Following Donald Trump's announcement of the US exit from the Iran nuclear agreement , the US Treasury Department said the United States would reinstate economic sanctions on Iran after a transitional period of 90 to 180 days, ie at the end of a period of 3 to 6 months after May 2018.
- Without the United States, the agreement maintained by Europeans, Russians and Chinese (scenario 1) will be difficult to preserve. The assumption that western companies pursuing their business in Iran will be sanctioned is therefore very likely (scenario 2). In this case, the Iranian auto industry risks experiencing the same difficulties as in the years 2012-2013-2014, during which time Iran was already subject to severe economic sanctions. During this time, PSA had to abandon its activities in Iran and it was only after the lifting of the sanctions that the French manufacturer was able to return to Iran. In 2017, PSA sold 443,000 vehicles in Iran (12% of its worldwide sales) and Renault 162,000 (4% of its worldwide sales).
- The two French manufacturers account for 35% of the Iranian market and their re- withdrawal from this market, which could be imposed by the US administration, would be very detrimental both for PSA and Renault but also for the entire Iranian economy, which had managed to return to pre-sanction levels in 2015-2016-2017.

Inovev predicts production of 150,000 units per year of the new Lexus ES
- 说明
Inovev predicts production of 150,000 units per year of the new Lexus ES
- The Toyota Group will replace the Lexus GS sedan (E-segment) with the Lexus ES, which has been on the North American market for six generations. This seventh generation will therefore be sold not only on the North American market but also on other world markets, such as ,for example, the European market. The Lexus ES is traditionally derived from the Toyota Camry (E-segment), which was renewed earlier this year and is also sold primarily in the North American market.
- The new Lexus ES therefore takes the body style of the recent Camry. It replaces the Lexus GS, which has never been commercially successful since its launch in 1993. Compared to the GS, the ES moves from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive ( part of the legacy of the Camry) and shares its TNGA modular platform with the recent Toyota Camry, Toyota Auris, Toyota CHR, Lexus UX and Lexus LS. The Lexus ES competes with the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Volvo S90.
- The Lexus ES is equipped with a hybrid engine (2.5-liter petrol + electric motor) developing a total of 218 hp. It fits in the Lexus range between the IS sedan (D segment) and the LS sedan (F segment). It will be produced, as today, on the US site of Georgetown (Washington State) and on the Japanese site of Tsutsumi.
- Inovev forecasts production of 150,000 units a year, split between US and Japanese sites.

The Top 15 Independent Chinese Manufacturers in the Chinese Market
- Independent Chinese automakers and independent brands owned by Chinese automakers that partner with foreign automakers in joint ventures account for 37 percent of China's PC car market in the first quarter of 2018 (up from 36 percent in 2017).
- Among the top fifteen of these manufacturers, Geely consolidates its leading position, with more than 400,000 passenger cars sold in China over this period (+ 37.2%), which corresponds to an annual rate of 1,600,000 units which no independent Chinese manufacturer had ever achieved so far.
- Changan, formerly leader of the Chinese market, is in second place, with 300,000 units in the first quarter of 2018 (-19.9%), which corresponds to an annual rate of 1,200,000 units.
- Great Wall is in third place (223,500 units, -0.4%), ahead of SAIC - with its brands Roewe and MG - (190,000 units, + 67.4%), Dongfeng (175,000 units; , 6%), BAIC (147,000 units, -11.3%), GAC (145,000 units, + 21.7%), Chery (132,000 units, + 13.2%) and BYD (110,000 units; + 21.8%).
- Only Geely and Changan can claim to be part of the world's Top 15 in 2018 (if the models produced in their JVs in China are counted with their non-Chinese JV partners ). In 2017, Geely was the thirteenth world manufacturer and Changan the fifteenth.

The Alfa-Romeo Mito will not be replaced
- 说明
The Alfa-Romeo Mito will not be replaced
- The FCA group has announced that the Alfa-Romeo Mito (segment B sedan) will not be replaced. The manufacturer states that sales of this model did not match its objectives. In addition, according to FCA , this model no longer corresponds to the new positioning of the brand that intends to compete with BMW and Mercedes. Admittedly, these two German premium manufacturers do not offer a B-segment sedan under their own logo, but Audi (another German premium manufacturer) markets it a B segment sedan under its own logo: the Audi A1.
- Alfa-Romeo will concentrate on the Giulietta (C-segment sedan), the Giulia (D-segment sedan), the Stelvio (D-segment SUV) and the future C-segment and E-segment SUVs, as well as the Alfetta sedan (E segment sedan).
- The Alfa-Romeo Mito production should stop during the summer of 2018, which will further reduce the low rate of use of the Mirafiori site that manufactured this model.
- However, the FCA Group has confirmed that the future E-segment SUV marketed under the Alfa-Romeo brand and based on the Maserati Levante SUV will be manufactured on the Mirafiori site (alongside the Maserati Levante), which will prevent its closure. This site will therefore only produce SUVs from 2019. As for the Fiat Punto, which shares its platform with the Alfa-Romeo Mito and whose production continues at low speeds in Melfi, it should not survive very long after the stop of the Mito.

SAIC begins construction of its Ningde assembly plant
- 说明
SAIC begins construction of its Ningde assembly plant
- The Chinese group SAIC produces cars of of the Volkswagen group brands (Volkswagen, Skoda) and GM brands (Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Baojun, Wuling) in JVs and also produces and sells cars under its own brands Roewe (ex-Rover) and MG. SAIC began construction of a new plant located in Ningde (Fujian Province - Southeast China).
- This plant will be dedicated to the manufacture of electrified passenger cars, mainly hybrid plug-in cars (PHEV) and 100% electric cars (BEV). The Ningde site which has a capacity of 150,000 cars per year (which could be doubled thereafter) should be operational in 2019.
- It is interesting to note that, following the quotas imposed by the Chinese government that will come into force in 2019, some manufacturers will have to make considerable efforts to sell 10% of their vehicles in electrified versions (like Volkswagen or GM) while others reach or even exceed these quotas. Thus, in 2017, BYD sold 26% of its sales in electrified version, BAIC 13%, Zotye 12% and JAC 12%. Other manufacturers are approaching quotas, such as SAIC (9%), Chery (5%) or Geely (3%). BAIC and JAC are further improving their model electrification rates in the first quarter of 2018, with 14% and 21% respectively. The worst off are Changan, Dongfeng, Great Wall, FAW and especially foreign builders like PSA, Hyundai-Kia, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Mazda and of course Volkswagen and GM.
