The European light utility vehicle market down 23.7% over 9 months 2020
- The European market (29 countries) for passenger cars (PCs) fell by 29.3% over the nine months of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019. The market of light utility vehicles (LUVs) fell by 23.7% year-to-date for the first nine months of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019.
- We observe that the LUV market has suffered less than the PC market, surely because private customers have been more affected by the lock-down and the fear of the next day, while companies, even if they have reduced their purchases of vehicles, partly continued to renew their vehicle fleet.
- The most important markets for LUVs remain France (which benefits from company car registrations based on PCs which represent 12.5% of the French LUV market), followed by England, Germany, Spain and Italy.
- The LUV markets that were most affected by the crisis in 2020 are Slovenia (-43%), Sweden (-41%), Spain (-33%), Portugal (-34%), Romania (-30%), Croatia (-28%) and England (-27%). Germany (-19%) and France (-20%) were less affected. It is to be noted that the Eastern Europe countries were impacted as much (-25%) as Western Europe countries (-24%).
- England, in addition to the coronavirus crisis, is suffering from the results of Brexit negotiations, which it is still unclear whether it will lead to a free trade agreement or not.

The 20 best-selling models in USA by model (9 months 2020)
- In a US market down 17.7% over the first 9 months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), the Ford F-Series pickup remains the best-selling model (589,034 units), as for over thirty years. The ranking of the 20 best selling models has not changed much compared to 2019, with the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram pickups in second and third place. The second place held by the Dodge Ram lasted only a few months. Behind these three pick-ups which alone represent 13.5% of the US market in 2020, we find two SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV, which achieve better sales than the best-selling American brand SUVs., like Chevrolet, Ford or Dodge.
- The same phenomenon is found with the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic sedans, which occupy the sixth and seventh places and score better than the best-selling American brand sedans. No American sedan is in the Top 20. American brands have abandoned the sedan market in favour of Japanese and Korean brands.
- The American brand SUVs are however doing quite well, occupying five places in the Top 20, starting from eighth place, like the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler and Ford Escape.
-The GM group remains the leader of the US market, with a 17% market share, ahead of the Ford (14%) and Toyota (14%), FCA (13%), Honda (9%), Hyundai- Kia (9%) and Renault-Nissan (7%).

The 20 best-selling models in Japan by model (9 months 2020)

The 20 best-selling models in Japan by model (9 months 2020)
- In a Japanese passenger car market down 18.1% over the first nine months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), the Honda N BOX remains the best-selling car (150,820 units), ahead of the Suzuki Spacia, Daihatsu Tanto and Toyota Raize. Three cars from the “Kei cars” segment therefore occupy the first three places in the Japanese Top 20. This segment now represents 33.3% of the Japanese market and 11 models of this segment are among those in the Top 20.
- On the other hand, SUVs represent a small share of registrations in Japan, since they do not exceed 18.5% of the market share, a much lower share than what we see in Europe, China or the United States.
- The Japanese customers prefer small A-segment cars to SUVs. A-segment cars (or kei cars) thus represent a share three times greater in Japan than in Europe, and even more important compared to registrations made in the United States or China. As in China, pick-ups make confidential sales in Japan, but minivans/MPVs still attract the market (15% of Japanese registrations).
- The Toyota group remains by far the leader of the Japanese market, with 46% market share, ahead of Honda (15%), Suzuki (14%), Nissan (12%), Mazda (4%) and Subaru (3% ). These Japanese groups represent 94% of registrations made in Japan. Imports therefore represent 6% of the Japanese market in 2020, a stable proportion compared to 2019 and very low compared to those recorded in Europe or the United States. Only China imports are even lower than Japan (5% of its registrations).

The 20 best-selling models in China by model (9 months 2020)
- In a Chinese passenger car market down 12.1% over the first 9 months of 2020 (compared to the same period of 2019), the Volkswagen Lavida remains the best-selling car (291,693 units), ahead of the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Bora. The German carmaker manages to place four models in the Top 20 (Lavida, Bora, Sagitar, Santana) including three among the first five places. Toyota also managed to place four (Corolla, Levin, Camry, RAV4), only one of them was in the top ten. Honda places three models (Civic, Accord, CRV). Finally, Nissan places two. The other eight places in the Top 20 are occupied by the Buick and Audi brands (one model each) and by the Chinese brands (five models including 2 Geely, 1 Great Wall, 1 Changan, 1 Wuling). It is to be noted that the only Premium model in the Chinese Top 20 in 2020 is the Audi A6.
- There are very few SUVs in the Top 20 as Inovev has identified only five, against fourteen sedans, while on the whole Chinese market there are 46.5% of SUVs and 46.5% of sedans, the rest being concentrated on minivans. There is not a substantial pickup market in China, despite Great Wall's efforts to impose this type of vehicle.
- The VW group remains by far the leader of the Chinese market in 2020, with a share of 18%, ahead of the groups GM (12%), Toyota (8%), Honda (8%), Geely (8%), Renault- Nissan (7%), Changan (5%), Great Wall (4%) and Hyundai-Kia (4%).
- Chinese brands represent 37% of the Chinese market in 2020. The Chinese government’s target of seeing more than 40% of them is still not achieved.

The production of the Opel Astra has been cut by six in 15 years

The production of the Opel Astra has been cut by six in 15 years
- The Opel Astra is a C-segment sedan that is the successor of the Opel Kadett, which dates back to 1962, and for which the German plant in Bochum was built. The Astra arrived in 1991 and used the name of the Opel Kadettproduced by Vauxhall, the other European subsidiary of the GM group. The Opel Kadett had gone through five different generations.
- The Astra also had five different generations, the current having been launched in 2015. This is also the last Astra based on GM platform, since the takeover of Opel / Vauxhall by the French group PSA and as the entire future launch program of Opel was completely restructured.
- Thus, the Corsa launched in 2019 is based on the PSA platform and engines also used by the Peugeot 208 launched the same year. The future Astra launched in 2021 will take over the platform and engines of the Peugeot new 308, which will be renewed the same year.
- This next generation of Astra will attempt to end fifteen years of continuous decline, with a production volume decreasing from over 600,000 units annually in 2005 to 300,000 in 2016, 200,000 in 2018 and less than 100,000 in 2020.
- Intended to be the most dangerous competitor of the VW Golf, it has become a very marginal sedan, competed both by rivals with greater notoriety and by SUVs which take a lot of customers from sedans. Finally, the Zafira compact MPV (1999-2019) has taken a good part of the Astra customers, and even if today the Zafira is stopped, the Astra decline continues. It will therefore not be easy for the PSA group to relaunch and sustain the Opel Astra.
