Lamborghini plans production of 3,500 Urus / year
Lamborghini (subsidiary of the Volkswagen group) unveiled its new SUV called Urus, which expands its range and immediately places this SUV at the top of the Premium category, as the Urus has no competitor at the moment. The Maserati Levante, BMW X6, and Porsche Cayenne are at a lower level, in terms of price, and of engine power in particular. That of Lamborghini reaches 650hp, against 430hp for Levante, 450hp for X6 or 570hh for Cayenne Turbo S. The  Bentley Bentayga V12 develops 600hp but it is another category, that of luxury SUVs. We will have to wait for the future SUVs of Ferrari, Aston-Martin and Bugatti for the Lamborghini Urus to really compete. At present, the Lamborghini Urus is the fastest SUV in the world.

The Lamborghini Urus adopts the MLB Evo platform used by the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Audi Q7. The engine is a 650hp V8 4.0 placed at the front, which is a novelty for the brand, accustomed to engines located behind the cockpit. The vehicle is all-wheel drive, for a better grip on the road, especially at high speeds. It will be available in 2019 in a V6 3.0 plug-in hybrid version (technology borrowed from the Porsche Panamera Plug-In).

Lamborghini plans to double its worldwide sales thanks to Urus, which should reach 7,000 annual units in 2019 against 3,500 in 2016. The Urus will be manufactured in the Lamborghini factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

The Toyota Yaris is the car most produced in France in 2017

The Toyota Yaris is again, as in 2016, the most produced car in France in 2017, since over the 12 months of the year, 233,652 units - a decrease of 1.8% compared to 2016 - have rolled off the line at the Onnaing factory (Hauts de France) where the production of this model for the European market is concentrated.

The Toyota Yaris is ahead of the Peugeot 3008 (212,487 units) and Peugeot 2008 (198,247 units) which benefited from the European craze for SUVs. The Peugeot 3008 has achieved a spectacular breakthrough with a 162% increase in 2017.

On the other hand, the Peugeot 308  decreased substantially  in 2017 (-19.3%), ending the year in  fourth place, with a production volume of 175,847 units.

It is this sharp decline of the Peugeot 308 that has allowed the Toyota Yaris to remain in first place in 2017, as  the  production volume of  the  Yaris  has been  stable over the last four years. The year 2018 will however be more difficult for the Yaris because the sales dynamics of the Peugeot 3008 suggest that it could well occupy the first place this year.

No Renault and Citroën brand models are in the top 4, as the Renault Clio is mainly manufactured in Turkey and the Citroën C3 is mainly manufactured in Slovakia. The Peugeot 208 as well is today mainly manufactured in Slovakia.

VW to partner with JAC to manufacture and sell LCV in China
Foreign manufacturers that have established operations in China, through partnerships (JV) with Chinese manufacturers, have mainly targeted the passenger car market, and very few have been interested in commercial vehicles, with the result that this market is today occupied almost exclusively by Chinese builders. The Chinese market for commercial vehicles was at 3.45 million units in 2015, 3.65 million in 2016 and will approach 4 million in 2017. Of  this volume, light commercial vehicles (less than 3.5 tonnes) account for nearly 2.2 million units in 2017.

Foreign manufacturers have therefore every reason to take an interest in this lucrative market, especially as it is invested almost exclusively by Chinese manufacturers today. This is why Renault recently announced that it will create a joint venture (JV) with Chinese OEM  Brilliance, to manufacture and market light commercial vehicles in China. For its part, PSA announced that it was associated with Chinese Changan the same reasons. Today, it is Volkswagen’s  turn to announce that it will create a joint venture (JV) with the Chinese  OEM JAC to serve this market. It is possible that other foreign manufacturers will make similar announcements over the next few months, as there is real expertise in the light commercial vehicle business particularly  at European manufacturers, and a large potential market to invest, larger than the European market (2 million LCV sales are expected in Europe in 2017).

Inovev expects production of 35,000 Mercedes CLS/ year
Mercedes unveiled the third generation of the CLS (the previous one was from 2011) which is situated between the E-Class and the S-Classis in the manufacturer's range. Presented as a 4-door coupé, like the first two generations, this model remains in reality a low-profile 4-door sedan, competing with the Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé. The new generation of the Mercedes CLS is also even launched just a few weeks after the Audi A7 Sportback.

The new CLS will try to boost sales of this family of models that peaked in 2005 (first generation), with a peak production of 53,000 units, but then experienced a clear disaffection (30,000 units in 2014, 20 000 units in 2017), due to the decline in sports-oriented sedans (the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series are experiencing the same trend), confronted with the SUVs that are attracting more sales, and the traditional sedans that have recently been renewed (Mercedes E-Class, BMW Series 5).

That's why the mission of the new CLS is difficult, especially as an AMG GT sedan is also about to be launched, which could weaken its position. Inovev expects a production of 30,000 to 35,000 units per year for this new CLS. The engines proposed are the following: 6-cylinder gasoline 3.0  367hp , 6-cylinder 3.0 diesel 340hp and 6-cylinder3.0  diesel 258hp. Other smaller engines will be available from 2019.

Top passenger cars sales in Japan over the first 9 months of 2017
The Japanese market (PC + LCV) has increased by 8.8% over the first nine months of 2017. If we look at the top 20 models, we can see that there have been a lot of changes from one year to the next. First, the Toyota Prius lost its leading position by losing 75,000 sales that went to the CHR which won 100,000 sales. The CHR has also taken sales from the Toyota Aqua, which lost 40,000 sales. The Toyota CHR thus made a spectacular breakthrough to reach 7th place.

The Nissan Note, Nissan DAYZ, Nissan Daihatsu Move, Honda Freed, Nissan Serena are progressing strongly, thanks to recent renewal or restyling, yet these models are progressing less strongly than the CHR.

The Honda N-Box is in first place in 2017, when it was second the year before.

By segment, we see that A segment vehicles (midgets or K-cars) account for 36.4% of the Japanese market (vs. 36.3% in 2016), B segment vehicles 24.9% (vs.  24.3 % in 2016), C segment vehicles 24.3% (vs. 23% in 2016), D segment vehicles 8.4% (vs. 10% in 2016) and E segment vehicles 6% (vs. 6, 2% in 2016).

By body type, sedans go from 67% of the Japanese market in 2016 to 65% in 2017, SUVs gain 1.5% ( from 12% to 13.5%) and minivans 0.5% ( from 21% to 21.5%). Today more minivans than SUVs are still sold in Japan, which is one of the peculiarities of this market.
