The next Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo will be produced in Vigo
 

The agreements between GM and PSA signed in December 2013 planned another joint production of new versions of light utility vehicles such as the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo. We knew that these three vehicles were going to be produced on a common platform when the agreement was signed but we did not yet know the place (s) of production.
We
now know, that the Vigo plant (Spain) was selected for the production of these three vehicles.


Today, the Berlingo and Partner are based on a PSA chassis and are already produced in Vigo. The Combo will use the base of the Fiat Doblo that is manufactured in Fiat’s Turkish plant (Tofas), which also produces the Doblo. Launched in 2012, it has never exceed the 36 000 annual sales threshold, while the previous generation based on GM was selling at twice as many units.


The three future models: Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo will be launched in 2018. They will be manufactured alongside the Citroën C4 Picasso, Citroen C-Elysee and Peugeot 301.


The first generations of the Berlingo and Partner (launched in 1996) are still produced in the Mangualde plant (Potugal) and sold in a few markets. So the question of the sustainability of the PSA Mangualde plant has arisen: will the current generation (launched in 2008) be transferred to the Portuguese plant or will other vehicles will be produced there?


PSA's management recently announced the upcoming decrease in models sold by the group, it is not certain that the Mangualde plant can be kept open.

Rising and declining markets in the first quarter of 2015

 

Inovev has studied increasing major world markets and decreasing ones during the first quarter of 2015. In this ranking, SUVs and MPVs are integrated in PC regardless of the countries analyzed.

PC rising markets: Europe 29 countries (+ 8.5%); Turkey (+ 42.1%); China (+ 9.0%); South Korea (6.3%); USA (+ 4.6%); India (+ 4.5%); Mexico (+ 23.0%); Australia (+ 4.2%).

PC declining markets: Russia (-36.3%); Japan (-15.5%); Brazil (-6.2%); Argentina (-36.8%).

Overall, the global market for PC increased by 1.8% in the first quarter of 2015.

LUV rising markets: Europe (+ 13.4%); Turkey (+ 54.1%); USA (+ 11.7%); India (+ 5.4%); USA (+ 5.6%); Mexico (+ 14.4%); Australia (+ 4.1%).

LUV decreasing markets: Japan (-7.7%); China (-19.4%); Brazil (-40.3%); Argentina (-27.8%). The light utility vehicle market in South Korea remained stable the first quarter of 2015.

Overall, the global LUV market remained stable in the first quarter of 2015.

Global PC + LUV market grew by 1.7% in the first quarter of 2015, compared to an increase of 3.5% over the full year 2014. In other words the growth of the world market has been halved.

Imports accounted for only 6% of the Chinese market in early 2015
 
Automotive imports accounted for only 6% of the Chinese market in the first two months of 2015. Unsurprisingly, the rate is lower than those registered in other major world markets (excluding Japan).

In the first two months of the year, the brands that have imported the largest number of vehicles were mostly Premium brands, representing 2/3 of imports.

By model, it is observed that imports do not supplement models already produced in-China , but they are models not produced in China. In the first two months of the year, the ten most imported models are the Subaru Forester, Jeep Compass, Lexus ES, Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Land Cruiser, Peugeot 4008, Mercedes M-Class, BMW X3, Renault Koleos and BMW 7 series. Of these 10 models, 8 are SUV and 2 are sedans (high end).

Of all the imported models, 60% were SUVs. Other models (40% of imported models) were distributed as follows: C segment (31% imported models), E segment (26%), F segment (20%), D segment (13%), B segment (7%) and A segment (3%). Compared to the overall market, SUVs and F segment vehicles are overrepresented in imports.

Toyota to build new plants in China and Mexico
 

Toyota has announced the construction of two new assembly plants, one in China and one in Mexico.


In China, in 2014, Toyota produced 967 000 vehicles, spread over three JV (with a total capacity of 1.21 million units): one in Tianjin (with FAW) which produces the Vios, Corolla, Crown, Reiz and RAV4, with a production capacity of 442 000 units. One in Sichuan (with FAW) which produces the Coaster, Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado and Prius, with a production capacity of 145 000 units. Finally, a third in Guangzhou (with GAC) which produces the Camry, Yaris, Highlander and Camry Hybrid with a production capacity of 380 000 units.


In addition to existing plants, Toyota announced the construction of a new plant at the Guangzhou site (i.e. with GAC) with a production of 100 000 vehicles a year and dedicated to the production of the Yaris. In 2014, in China 75 000 Yaris were produced and sold (against 15 000 in 2013). Toyota plans to double sales of this model over the coming years in the Chinese market, with the help of the hybrid version.


In Mexico, Toyota has a plant in Tijuana with a capacity of 100 000 vehicles a year that is devoted to manufacturing the pickup Tacoma (equivalent to Hilux), which represented 71 000 units in 2014.


A second plant has been announced, located in Guanajuato, in central Mexico. It should solely produce the Corolla sedan (200 000 vehicles a year), already made in the USA and Canada. This production is to be shipped to the three countries of North America. As 430 000 Corolla were manufactured in North America last year and that 410 000 units were sold in this region, we can deduce that the production conducted in Mexico will replace that of Canada. The manufacturer has indeed indicated that a new model would soon be put into production in the Canadian Toyota plant, located in Cambridge it currently has a capacity of 200 000 units per year.

Japanese production PC + LUV increased by 1% in 2014
 
Car production within Japan (PC + LUV) increased by 1% in 2014 compared to 2013, to 9.34 million units. However this result is still very far from the figures recorded before 2009.

Only the increase in the Japanese market in 2014 (+ 3.5%) can be held accountable for this production increase of 1%.

Indeed, the volume of exports (4.65 million vehicles) was down slightly in 2014 (-4.5%). The establishment of new models manufactured outside of Japan has continued in recent years, mechanically taking away units that were previously produced in Japan. Thus, production of Japanese manufacturers outside Japan was up 2.4% to 4.5 million units. In addition, imports remained stable (almost 5% market share).

The production volume of passenger cars (PC) was on the rise by 1.1% reaching 8.28 million units and those of light utility vehicles (LUV) grew by 3.8% to 1.36 million units.

By make, only Toyota (-2.7% to 3.27 million units), Nissan (-8.7% to 881 000 units) and Mazda (-6.6% to 934 300 units) experienced a decrease. All other makes were on the rise: Suzuki (+8.6% to 1.06 million units), thanks to the growing market for K-Cars, Honda (+ 14% to 958,179 units), Daihatsu (+ 1% to 782 195 units), Subaru (+ 8.75% to 695,790 units) Mitsubishi (+ 8.3% to 640,890 units) and Isuzu (+ 9.7% to 267,872 units).

The most produced model is the Toyota Land Cruiser (400 000 units) in front of the Toyota Prius (370 000 units).
