The 20 most produced vehicles in the world in 2022
The most produced vehicle worldwide in 2022 is the Ford F-Series (880,232 untis), which exceptionally gave up its top spot to the Toyota RAV4 in 2021. The Toyota RAV4 is in second place (863,782 untis), very close to the Ford F-Series, as the two models are separated by only 16,450 untis. The Toyota Corolla (844,693 untis) is in third place, demonstrating the strong presence of the Japanese brand in the top 20 in 2022. It is worth remembering that Toyota is the world's largest carmaker.

A big surprise in fourth place is that Tesla places its Model Y (706,665 untisthere, doubling its volume compared to 2021. The Toyota Hilux pickup (686,377 untis) takes fifth place, ahead of the Ram (679,335 untis) and Chevrolet Silverado (640,873 untis) pickups for the first time, but only by a margin. The Toyota Camry (648,262 untis) in seventh place is the brand's fourth model to appear in the top 20. The Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV (571,869 untis) in ninth place is the second most battery electric vehicle produced in 2022. In tenth place is the Honda CRV (560,612 untis) ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (547,212 untis), Volkswagen Tiguan (529,277 untis), Hyundai Tucson (498,530 untis), BYD Song (496. 834 untis), Jeep Grand Cherokee (430,631 untis), Honda Accord (430,225 untis), Nissan Sylphy (422,094 untis), Kia Sportage (412,063 untis), Toyota Corolla Cross (390,987 untis) and Volkswagen Lavida (377,152 untis).

Among the top 20 models produced worldwide in 2022, nine are SUVs, seven sedans and four pickupsEight cars come from Japanese carmakers, six from the U.S., two from Korea, two from China and two from EuropeFinally, there are three battery electric vehicles (Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV).
The 20 largest car carmakers in the world in 2022
In 2022, the world's 20 largest carmakers accounted for 71.5% of global light vehicle sales (passenger cars and light utility vehicles). Toyota Group the leader is the only one to exceed the 10 million mark (10.5 million vehicles). The Japanese carmaker is ahead of Volkswagen Group (8.3 million vehicles), Hyundai-Kia Group (6.85 million vehicles), Renault-Nissan Group (6.15 million vehicles), GM Group (6 million vehicles) and Stellantis Group (5.8 million vehicles). These six carmakers are the only ones to sell more than 4 million vehicles, far ahead of their competitors. They account for more than 45% of global sales.

Honda (3.78 million vehicles) and Ford (3.7 million vehicles) follow at a respectful distance. Suzuki (2.97 million vehicles) follows behind, ahead of premium carmakers Mercedes (2.48 million)  and BMW (2.4 million).

They are followed by Chinese carmakers Geely (2.28 million), BYD (1.86 million), Changan (1.70 million), which are ahead of American Tesla (1.3 million), India's Tata Motors (1.26 million) and Chinese carmakers Chery (1.16 million), MG-Roewe (1.07 million) and Great Wall (1.07 million). Mazda (1.05 million) closes the list of the top 20 worldwide. The remaining carmakers achieve a sales volume of less than one million vehicles in 2022.

This is the first time that Chinese carmakers occupy six places in the world's top 20. It is also the first time that the Tesla brand is represented in the world's top 20. Finally, the carmaker with the largest volume increase is BYD and the carmaker with the largest volume decrease is Renault-Nissan.
Sales of BEV and PHEV in Europe (29 countries) in 2022
Sales of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVreached 1,575,079 units in Europe in 2022 (+29.3% compared to 2021) including 1,533,887 in the 17 Western European countries (including UK, Switzerland and Norway) and 41,192 in the 12 countries of Eastern Europe. BEVs represent a share of 14% of the total Europe 29 market. Western Europe registered 15.1% of BEVs while Eastern Europe only bought 3.6%. The gap therefore remains very significant between the countries of Western Europe and those of Eastern Europe. However, the increase of BEV sales reaches 51% in Eastern Europe in 2022, compared to 29% in Western Europe. The gap remains also wide between the countries of the North and the countries of the South (Spain: 4%; Italy: 4%; Greece: 3%).

Sales of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVreached 1,013,827 units in Europe in 2022, which represents a drop of 3% compared to 2021, proof that this type of engine is starting to be less attractive. However, future Euro VII regulations could once again favour sales of PHEVs. With 9% of car sales in Europe in 2022, PHEVs are selling as much as Full-HEVs.

Sales of Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEV) accounted for 16% of car sales in Europe in 2022. This is more than sales of diesel cars which fell to 15% of the European market last year.

Petrol car sales still account for the largest share of the European market in 2022, with 37% of sales. Total sales of thermal cars (petrol + diesel) therefore still represent the majority of sales (52%) in 2022, while the European Commission's objective is for this total to fall to 0% in twelve years.
Global production of vehicles increased by 4% in 2022
The global production of vehicles (PC+UV) increased by 4% in 2022, according to Inovev estimates, despite a drop in registrations of around 2%. This tends to show that carmakers have decided to stock after a period of significant destocking during 2020 and 2021 due to the health crisis, then the semiconductor crisis.

In total, nearly 84 million vehicles were produced  worldwide in 2022, including 50 million on the Asian continent (60% of global production), but it is in North America that the increase in production was the strongest (+12%), in particular due to relocations.

Europe saw its production felt by 5% but the most depressed region was the Russia-Ukraine-Belarus region due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The Mini is the most produced vehicle in the UK in 2022
The Nissan Qashqai (C-segment SUV) launched in 2007 was for several years (between 2010 and 2019) the most produced vehicle in UK, before collapsing in 2020. The production volume of this model which had reached 300,000 units in 2012 and in 2016 fell to 150,000 units in 2020, a drop of 50%. It is certain that the postponement of its replacement to 2021 played an important role in this sales drop, but also the increasing competition in this segment (particularly Korean) and the launch of a Renault model (Kadjar) very close to Qashqai played against the Nissan SUV.

In 2020, 2021 and 2022, it is therefore the Mini (B-segment saloon) which has once again become the most produced car in UKwith a volume of 180,000 units per year, a volume which has remained stable for a decade. It is to remind that the Mini had already been the most produced car in UK before the launch of the Nissan Qashqai, especially between 2005 and 2009.

The Toyota Corolla (C-segment sedan) is in third place, ahead of the Opel Vivaro (mid-range LUV) and the Nissan Juke (B-segment SUV) which also fails (like the Nissan Qashqai) to come back to its scores recorded by the first generation. But it is true that the Renault Captur has taken a good part of its customer.

Behind these five models, UK produces a large number of Premium models, such as Land Rovers, Jaguars, Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, Aston-Martins, McLarens, Lotuses, etc. Also to note that Honda production ceased last year in Great Britain.
