The global automotive market is down 4.5% compared to the first four months of 2019
- The global automotive market (PC + LUV) increased by 34.2% in the first four months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, which was characterized by the closure of automobile plants for several weeks, both in Europe and in China or in the United States, following the consequences of the first wave of COVID-19.
- This is the reason why it makes more sense to compare the vehicle registration figures against the first four months of 2019. And in this case, the global automotive market is down 4.5% compared, with 25,906,629 vehicles, against 19,304,125 in the first four months of 2020 and 27,134,112 in the same period in 2019. We are therefore at 6.6 million more units compared to 2020 but 1.2 million units less compared to 2019. However, the gap seems to be thinning month after month (April 2021 is thus at the same level as April 2019).
- The total breaks down into 20,271,271 passenger cars (down 7.7% from 2019) and 5,635,358 light utility vehicles (up 9% from 2019). Regarding passenger cars, Europe is at + 23.2% compared to 2020 but at -25% compared to 2019, China is at + 53.7% compared to 2020 but -0.8% compared to in 2019, the United States is at + 27.5% compared to 2020 and + 0.1% compared to 2019, Japan is at + 8.6% compared to 2020 and -6.7% compared to to 2019.
- Regarding light utility vehicles, Europe is at + 49.7% compared to 2020 but -4.4% compared to 2019, China is at + 47.3% compared to 2020 and + 29.2% compared to compared to 2019, the United States is + 31.7% compared to 2020 and + 14.2% compared to 2019.

Ford launches its 100% electric "Lightning" F-Series pickup

Ford launches its 100% electric "Lightning" F-Series pickup
- Like Tesla and its competitors GM and Stellantis, the American carmake Ford wishes to accelerate and amplify its strategy in the market for 100% electric vehicles, in Europe, China and the United States.
- After the launch of the Mustang Mach E last year, which shows a first step in this market, the carmaker has unveiled its F-150 Series pickup for the first time available with a 100% electric drive. It is to be noted that the F-150 is the lightest and most compact version of all the F Series versions.
- Ford also announced the upcoming launch of a 100% electric version of its US-produced Transit utility van.
- Ford expects 40% of its models sold worldwide in 2030 to be powered by plug-in hybrid or 100% electric powertrains. This could represent a volume of 1.5 million units by that time. However, Ford produced just 37,500 such vehicles in 2020, representing 0.9% of its global production last year.

Ford will produce an electric light utility vehicle in Craiova (Romania) from 2024
- 说明
Ford will produce an electric light utility vehicle in Craiova (Romania) from 2024
- The American carmaker Ford has announced that it will produce a 100% electric light commercial vehicle at its Romanian plant in Craiova from 2024. It will be preceded in 2023 by its combustion engine version (probably diesel) which will succeed to the Transit Connect van whose origins date back to 2003 for the first generation and 2013 for the second generation. Actually, every ten years, the Transit Connect is renewed, and the future generation will be available for the first time in thermal and electric engines.
- Today, the Craiova plant assembles B-segment SUVs - Ecosport (end of life) and Puma - while Transit Connect is produced today at Ford's Spanish plant, in Valencia. It was initially planned to transfer the production of Transit Connect from Spain to the United States which is one of its biggest markets, but ultimately the transfer of production to Romania was chosen. This Romanian plant has a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year.
- The Romanian Craiova plant will be Ford's third European site to produce a 100% electric vehicle, following the carmaker’s announcement to produce electric vehicles in Cologne (Germany) and Kocaeli (Turkey) plants.
- Ford, however, is still far from the production capacities of Volkswagen, which intends to turn Zwickau, Dresden and Martorell into plants capable of producing several hundred thousand electric vehicles each year. In addition, Volkswagen has just announced the construction of a third electric vehicle plant in China, after those in Anting and Foshan, this time located in Anhui province.

The level of sales is not directly related to the price of Brent
- 说明
The level of sales is not directly related to the price of Brent
- Inovev wanted to know if the evolution of the price of Brent oil affects the evolution of auto sales. Used as a standard for setting the price of crude in the stock markets of much of the world, Brent is a good benchmark for the price of oil. The price of Brent obviously has an impact on the price of fuel (gasoline and diesel) even if it tends to smooth out the sharp rises and falls in Brent.
- Inovev compared the official Brent price established annually from 2000 through 2020 against sales of passenger cars in Europe. When we observe the two curves representing these two parameters, we realize that the price of Brent does not have a direct impact on auto sales, even if we take into account the fact that the price of fuel is smoothed compared to the price of Brent.
- We can simply observe that the increase in the price of Brent between 2010 and 2014 coincides with a drop in auto sales, but that it started in 2008, at the beginning of the financial crisis. However, the increase in the price of Brent between 2003 and 2007 did not trigger a decline in sales. On the other hand, the fall of the Brent price between 2015 and 2016 coincides with an increase in sales, but this had started in 2014 and continued until 2019, while the price of Brent had risen between 2016 and 2018. Finally, the price of Brent fell in 2020 as the auto market collapsed.
- There is therefore no direct link between the price of Brent and car sales in Europe. The evolution of the automotive market is impacted at short term by definitively other parameters.
