Toyota to gather its electric models under the brand BZ

Hyundai has announced that its future electric models will be gathered into a sub-brand called Ioniq and Kia will integrate them into a sub-brand called EV. On its side, Toyota has just announced the creation of its new sub-brand BZ which will integrate all its future battery electric models, as today there are none marketed under the Toyota brand.


Toyota, which was pioneered in the hybrid technology from 1997, with the launch of the Prius, and which sells a million and a half a year worldwide, has now adopted the technology of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plans to launch seven BEVs by 2025, i.e. two per year from 2022.


At the end of 2020, the Toyota group was proposing only four BEVs models (including 3 in China and 1 in Europe and USA) out of a total of 55 electrified vehicles, including 45 hybrids (HEV) 4 rechargeable hybrids (PHEV) and 2 fuel cell (FCEV).


Even if Toyota will continue to commercialise hybrid vehicles in large numbers, the fact the carmaker wants to launch several BEVs marks a profound change in strategy.


The first model with the BZ brand will be the BZ 4X presented at the Shanghai Motor Show 2021, based on the Toyota RAV4 (the best-selling SUV in the world), and which should be marketed from 2022. The other future BZ models will be declined below and above the designation 4X, according to their dimensions, the letter X identifying the SUV.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 units per year of the new Volkswagen ID6
Volkswagen presented at the Shanghai Motor Show 2021, the ID 6,  its third BEV based on the MEB platform, after the ID 3 and ID 4, and specially designed for the Chinese market. It is in fact an extended version of the ID 4, which can allow seven passengers instead of five for the ID 4. The total length of the ID 6 is therefore 4.88 m, 30 centimetres longer than ID 4. The width is 1.85m and the height is 1.68m. As it stands, the ID 6 design evoke a mix of minivans and SUVs styles.

The Volkswagen ID 6 will propose three levels of EV motors power (180 hp, 204 hp and 305 hp) and two battery sizes (58 kWh and 77 kWh), allowing two different ranges (435 km and 588 km). The 305 hp version will be all-wheel drive.

The new model will be produced in China, both with SAIC (in Anting) and FAW (in Foshang) which have been producing Volkswagen vehicles under license for over twenty years. One will be named ID 6 X and the other ID 6 Crozz. The German brand now holds between 3 and 4% of the Chinese BEV market, and thanks to the arrival of new models, including the ID 6, hope to reach between 12 and 16% of this market within five to ten years. As a reminder, Volkswagen has a 15% share of the Chinese market of thermal cars.

The German carmaker plans to launch seven different models in China based on the MEB platform by 2023, including ID 3 and ID 4. The ID 5 is expected to appear in 2022, including in Europe. Inovev forecasts 50,000 sales per year of the Volkswagen ID6.

Alfa-Romeo cancels the Giorgio platform for its future models
Following the arrival in 2023 of the STLA Large platform for electrified Stellantis vehicles in D/E segments, the Alfa-Romeo brand will cancel the Giorgio platform on which the Giulia and Stelvio were designed, the only models of the brand still in production today.
All future Alfa-Romeo models will therefore be based on the new STLA Large platform, derived from the STLA Medium, which is itself based on the e-VMP platform, planned for the next Peugeot 3008 launched in 2023. All future Alfa-Romeos will therefore be battery electric or plug-in hybrids.

Two exceptions although to this new platform policy: Tonale C-segment compact SUV which is ready to be produced and which will be marketed in March 2022) and a future B-segment SUV that will be based on the e-CMP platform dedicated to B-segment cars such as Peugeot 208-2008 and Opel Corsa-Mokka. This model will be produced in Poland, at the Tichy plant, probably from 2024. Other versions sold under the Fiat and Jeep brands will also be produced on the same lines.

No doubt that the Lancia brand will also benefit from the launch of a B-segment SUV based on the same platform and which could replace the Ypsilon whose origins date back to 2011 but which keep a customer basis as the Ypsilon is still one of the best-selling cars in Italy today.

Stellantis expects 350,000 annual sales of these four SUVs, including 130,000 Fiat, 110,000 Jeep, 60,000 Alfa-Romeo and 50,000 Lancia. According to the production capacity of Tichy, this production volume therefore implies the end of the Fiat 500 and Lancia Ypsilon production on this plant around 2023-2024.

Stellantis will focus its production on 4 platforms instead of 23
The merger of PSA with FCA has changed the platform strategy developed by the PSA group last year. In addition, the future Euro 7 standard (which could be voted by the European Parliament at the end of 2021) could accelerate the switch to electrified vehicles by 2030. The Stellantis group is therefore now counting on 38% of its sales in BEV + PHEV in Europe in 2025 (against 14% in 2021) and 70% in 2030. The carmaker will focus its efforts on the pooling of platforms between the ex-PSA and ex-FCA models and the generalization of electrified motors throughout its models, to reach a sales level of electrified models of around 70% of its total sales in 2030. In the USA, the objectives are 31% of sales of electrified vehicles in 2025 (compared to 4% in 2021) and 35% in 2030.

Stellantis also plans to install a global battery cell capacity of 130 GWh in 2025 and 250 GWh in 2030, which would be equivalent to equipping 2.5 million electric vehicles in 2025 and 5 million in 2030 (for an average 50 KWh battery). These figures show that Stellantis expects a sharp decline of its sales by 2030, depending on how the market will react to the electrification of the offer. Today Stellantis sales are around 8 million vehicles per year.

Regarding platforms, Stellantis wants to focus on four electrified platforms (compared to 23 today) named STLA. In 2023, the STLA Medium (segments C and D) and STLA Large (segments D and E) will appear, then in 2024 the STLA Frame (large SUV and pick-up) and in 2026 the STLA Small (segments A-B-C). Before this date, the 2nd version of the eCMP will appear at the end of 2022 (segments A-B-C).

Dongfeng launches in Europe BEVs under the Seres brand
Following MG, Polestar, Lynk & Co and Aiways, which sold a total of 30,000 vehicles in Europe last year, Dongfeng is launching in Europe the Seres brand, which markets battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Note that Dongfeng has been struggling in China since 2017, its production volume having been halved in three years.

The Seres brand will be launched with the Seres 3 and Seres 5, followed by Seres 7 next year. Unlike Lynk & Co and Aiways who have opted for a distribution through internet, the Dongfeng group brand intends to rely on traditional and physical distribution groups and local dealers, which is the way adopted by MG (a subsidiary of SAIC group). The Dongfeng brand has announced the creation of 40 dealerships at the end of April 2021 and targets totally 80 at the end of December 2021 and then 100 in 2022. This is roughly the current number of dealerships for the brand MG.  All Seres models sold in Europe are produced in China, where they will be imported. We can therefore expect very competitive prices.

Geely on its side is launching a new brand for battery electric vehicles (after having created Polestar and Lynk & Co) which intends to compete with Tesla in China. This brand named Zeekr will be positioned in the Premium market (where Polestar is already present) and will adopt a specific platform named SEA which will also be used by Polestar, Lynk & Co and Smart. Geely intends to dedicate the Zeekr brand for the Chinese market but does not exclude to export its models all over the world. The first model of the Zeekr brand will be launched at the end of 2021.
