China purchased 4.8 million BEVs over 10 months 2023
Over the first 10 months of 2023, the world purchased more than 8.0 million battery electric passenger cars (BEV) representing 11% of the market, including 7.5 million in China, Europe and the United States. As for battery electric light utility vehicles, they are still very marginal and it will take several years for their distribution to be at the same share as passenger cars.
 
Regarding battery electric passenger cars, China purchased 4.8 million over the first 10 months of 2023 compared to 3.9 million over the first 10 months of 2022 and 2 million over the first 10 months of 2021. BEVs represent 23% of the Chinese passenger car market this year compared to 21% in 2022 and 13% in 2021. China is of course the world's leading BEV market in 2023, as in 2022 and 2021, representing 60% this year of global BEV sales.
 
Europe (EU + UK + Norway + Switzerland) for its part purchased 1.7 million BEVs over the first 10 months of 2023, compared to 1.1 million over the first 10 months of 2022 and 0.9 million over the first 10 months of 2021. But we have observed a stabilization in volume of BEV sales in this region since March 2023 (while growth continues in China). BEVs represent 16% of the European passenger car market this year compared to 14% in 2022 and 10.5% in 2021. BEV sales growth is slowing in Europe.
 
The United States, for its part, purchased 1 million BEVs over the first 10 months of 2023, compared to 650 000 over the first 10 months of 2022 and 350 000 over the first 10 months of 2021. BEVs represent 8% of the US market this year compared to 6% in 2022 and 3% in 2021. Contrary to what we observe in Europe, the growth in BEV sales continues month after month.
Toyota consolidates its position as world leader over 9 months 2023
Over the first nine months of 2023, global light vehicles production (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) increased by 8% compared to the first nine months of 2022, with a volume of 67 million vehicles compared to 62 million.
 
In this context, the Toyota group consolidates its first place globally, with 8.5 million vehicles produced, ahead of the Volkswagen groups (6.5 million), Hyundai-Kia (5.3 million) and Stellantis (5 million). These four carmakers are increasing in volume compared to last year.
 
On the other hand, the GM group (4 million) located in fifth position, lost 500,000 vehicles compared to last year. This is the largest drop recorded among the top 20 global carmakers.
 
The Nissan group – which has become independent again – reaches sixth place (3.5 million), ahead of the Ford groups (3.1 million), Honda (3 million) and Suzuki (2.3 million).
 
The BYD group (2.1 million), which almost doubled its volume from last year (this is the largest increase recorded among the top 20 world carmakers), reaches tenth place, behind Honda and Suzuki. He was thirteenth in 2022.
 
The Premium carmakers BMW and Mercedes follow each other very closely (2 million and 1.9 million), ahead of the Geely groups (1.8 million) and Renault (1.6 million). Tesla follows in fifteenth place (1.3 million), increasing by 400,000 units compared to last year. Behind, we note the presence of the Chinese Changan (1.2 million), Chery (1.2 million) and Great Wall (800 000). Tata Motors (1.1 million) and Mazda (1 million) fit between these three Chinese carmakers.
The Renault group wants to sell 1 million BEVs in 2031
The Renault group has announced that it wants to sell one million electric vehicles in 2031 compared to 150,000 in 2023. To achieve this objective, it would be necessary to increase the sales volume of its BEVs by 100,000 units each year. Renault specifies that it wants to reach 300,000 BEV sales in 2025 and 1,000,000 in 2031.
 
To achieve these ambitious objectives, the Renault group plans to launch several new models by 2026: Scenic BEV, R4 BEV, R5 BEV, Twingo BEV, Alpine BEV, Master BEV, Trafic BEV in addition to the Spring, ZoéMegane BEV and Kangoo BEV already marketed. To increase its market share, the Renault group plans to launch BEVs priced at less than 30,000 euros (R4 BEV and R5 BEV) and even less than 20,000 euros (Twingo BEV).
 
It should also be noted that with the aim of developing its battery electric vehicles, Renault has created a dedicated financial structure, called Ampère, a subsidiary of the Renault group.
 
Inovev is instead counting on 600,000 BEV sales in 2030 from the Renault groupInovev forecasts 520,000 Renault brand BEVs produced in Europe in 2030 including 126,000 R5 and R5 Alpine, 106,000 Twingo, 93,000 Mégane, 81,000 R4, 75,000 Scenic, 35,000 Kangoo, 10,000 Trafic and 5,000 Master. In addition, Dacia should import 70,000 Spring from China, unless the carmaker decides to produce it in Europe by then (probably in Slovenia, alongside the Twingo BEV with which it could share platform and engines).
Renault will launch 8 new models in the world
Renault will launch eight new models specifically dedicated to overseas markets (production and marketing of models outside Europe) by 2027, or two new models per year on average for the next four years.  Part of these models will be equipped with thermal engines and the other with electrified engines.
 
The carmaker wants to double its sales in regions outside Europe compared to 2019, excluding of course the sales which had been made at the time in Russia. Russia is no longer part of Renault's commercial ambitions, the French carmaker is instead focusing on Latin America, India, the Middle East but also Africa where Renault already has a significant influence, particularly in North Africa.
 
Renault aims to sell a third of its cars with a full electric or hybrid engine in these regions.
 
The B-segment SUV called Kardian is the first model to implement this strategy. This new model will be marketed and produced in Latin America and Morocco, the largest market in the Maghreb.
 
The Kardian, which measures 4.12 m long, is based on a new modular platform which will be used for most of the other seven models programmed by Renault and which can be compared with the CMP Entry platform of the Indian Citroën C3, intended also to models marketed outside Europe. The Kardian is equipped with a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine with direct injection developing 125 hp, or 25 hp more than the European version of this engine. In Europe, 130 hp is achieved by the 1.3 liter 4-cylinder and by the new 1.2 liter 3-cylinder fitted to the Renault Austral and Espace.
Renault will produce Polestars at its Korean assembly site
The Renault site in Busan in Korea (a former Samsung Motors factory) has been experiencing real development difficulties for several years. The different models produced on this site have not been very successful. Even the Koléos (D-segment SUV) which was exported to Europe did not have a very successful commercial career.
 
The factory's production volume decreased from 280,000 units in 2010 to 120,000 in 2020. The Renault Arkana which has been produced in this factory since 2021 has made it possible to increase to the 150,000 unit mark in 2022. But this model is practically the only one to be produced on this site and in 2022, the factory's production volume fell to 130,000 units, or 50% of its capacity. As a result, the Busan factory was seriously threatened with closure in the medium term.
 
Renault's agreements with the Chinese Geely have risen hope for a further revival of the factory's activity. These agreements resulted in the purchase by Geely of 34% of Renault's Korean subsidiary with the aim of producing its battery electric vehicles at the Busan site. Initially, this factory will produce battery electric Polestar models (Polestar is part of the Geely group) and the Polestar 4 will be the first to be produced on this site, from 2025.
 
The Polestar 4 is a battery electric D-segment coupe crossover, 4.84 m long, equipped with a 102 kWh battery. The start of production of the Polestar 4 in Busan will benefit the Alpine brand in the short term, as Renault's sports subsidiary wants to use the Geely platform for its future models intended for the American and Asian markets.
