Inovev forecasts between 250,000 and 300,000 new Tesla Model Y per year
Electric car manufacturer Tesla has unveiled its fourth model, the Model Y, which will be on the market from the end of 2020. It is a D-segment SUV based on the Model 3 sedan platform (200,000 units have already left the Fremont, California plant).

In the Tesla range, the Model Y will be between the Model 3 and the Model S in terms of price. The manufacturer has indicated that it will cost about 10% more than a Model 3, i.e. between €56,000 and €69,000 in Europe. The commercialization of this model should begin in the USA and China in 2020, and in Europe in 2021.

The manufacturer announces a range of 368km for the cheapest version and 540km for the most expensive version (estimated WLTP cycle). Model Y should take some Model 3 customers, given the continued success of SUVs around the world. It could also take customers from the Model X in its 7-seat configuration, as it will be much cheaper.

The Model Y will compete with the Jaguar I-Pace and the future compact SUVs of the Volkswagen group, which will be launched in the years 2020-2022. Tesla made sure to introduce its Model Y model before the Volkswagen group's SUVs, when they should be on the market around the same time. Inovev expects  production of  200,000 units per year of the new Model Y in the USA, to which must be added between 50,000 and 100,000 units produced in China.

The best concept cars shown in Geneva
At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, Audi presented a Q4 E-Tron concept that is an SUV with a 100% electric motor. This  car fits in the manufacturer's SUV range between Q3 and Q5. According to the manufacturer, this concept is very similar to the production model that will be on the market from autumn 2020.

Skoda presented a Vision IV concept that prefigures the brand's first model built on  the MEB platform used on all Volkswagen Group electric models. The Skoda model ,which  adopts a compact SUV line ,could be launched in 2020 or 2021.

Honda presented a 100% electric 4-door compact sedan concept that will be on the market in the first half of 2020. Honda expects all its models sold in Europe to be electrified (100% electric  or hybrid) from 2025. Today, Honda  sales  are only  at 1% of the European market.

Fiat presented a compact  electric 4-door sedan concept called Centoventi  that could be marketed in the early 2020s as the  successor to the Panda. Fiat wants to make it the cheapest electric car on the market.

Mercedes presented an EQV concept that prefigures the 100% electric V-Class  that will be on the market from 2020. This evolution was foreseeable since the launch of the electric Vito last year.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 new Ssangyong Korando per year
Ssangyong  (a subsidiary of Indian manufacturer Mahindra) is a modest- sized,  Korean manufacturer of SUVs , never exceeding 200,000 sales per year. Its current range includes the Tivoli (B segment), Korando (C segment), Rexton (D segment) and Rodius (E segment), as well as the Musso pickup truck ,which replaces the Actyon Sports.

At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, Ssangyong presented the new generation of the Korando, whose style is strongly inspired by that of the Tivoli. The previous generation of the Korando was launched  in 2010.

This  new Ssangyong  SUV  is making a real  leap forward since ,for the first time ,it will be available in a 100% electric version. The Korando will  also be available in a petrol version (4 cylinders 1500 turbo) and a diesel version (4 cylinders 1600 turbo).

The Korando competes with the generalist SUVs in the C segment, such as the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota CHR, Honda HRV, Renault Kadjar, Peugeot 3008, Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland, Ford Kuga, Volkswagen T-Roc, Seat Ateca, Skoda Karoq, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, none of which is currently available in a  100% electric version.

Ssangyong  Korando is produced in the manufacturer's Korean factory in Pyongtaek. Inovev expects annual production of 50,000 units per year, with 30,000 sold in Korea and 20,000 exported.

Geely plans to build 50,000 new Polestar 2 per year
Polestar is a brand of the Geely group, created in 2015, and  dedicated to Volvo based, 100% electric, premium cars . While the Polestar 1 is a 100% electric coupé, the Polestar 2, presented  in Geneva, is a 100% electric 4-door sedan that develops a power output of around 400 hp and boasts a range of 500 kilometers. Its CMA platform is  the base for the Volvo XC40 and Lynk&Co 01, 02, 03.

The Polestar 2 is a direct rival of the Tesla Model 3 which has just arrived on the European market.

The Polestar 2 will arrive on the European market from the first quarter of 2020, just a few months after its launch in China. It will be produced in Volvo's Chinese factory in Daqing, , which already produces the Polestar 1 coupé and will produce the Polestar 3, which will be a compact SUV, next year.

Geely aims for an annual production of 50,000 Polestar 2 out of a total of 100,000 units for all Polestar models, including the Polestar 1 coupe, Polestar 2 sedan ,and Polestar 3 SUV.

Of this total, the manufacturer hopes to sell some tens of thousands of these three models on the European continent. Tesla sold 30,000 electric cars in 2018 in Europe, without the Model 3 which started selling in Europe  in February 2019. Geely's objective for Polestar therefore seems quite ambitious.

Global sales of electrified cars in 2018
While the Chinese government has introduced quotas for manufacturers based in China so that their sales of electrified cars  are around 10% of their total sales on this market in 2019 ,and will be  even more in the following years, the European Union has preferred to act differently but with a comparable target: it imposes a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions for  new vehicles sold in Europe by 2030.

There are several ways for manufacturers to reduce their CO2 emissions. Electrification is one of the routes that shows rapid results. Today, the share of  100% electric vehicles  is  about 1% of the market in Europe compared to 4% in China. If we include plug-in hybrid cars, this share rises to 2% in Europe compared to 5% in China. If we also include non-rechargeable hybrid cars, this share rises to 5.5% in Europe compared to 5.5% in China.

There are therefore - in terms of market share - as many electrified cars in Europe as in China, but there are many more 100% electric cars sold in China than in Europe and many more non-rechargeable hybrid cars sold in Europe than in China.

We can now expect strong growth in sales of electrified cars in both China and Europe. The next Frankfurt Motor Show will give a clear idea of the electric car of the 2020s.
