Among the 10 best-selling cars in England, 2 are produced in England
- There have been fewer and fewer carmakers established in Great Britain over the past twenty years. Ford has not produced cars in this country since 2012 and PSA, which took over Vauxhall, maintains symbolic production.
- Since the end of the British Leyland group in the 1980s, local carmakers have virtually all disappeared, and the British auto industry has survived in part thanks to Japanese carmakers: Toyota, Nissan and Honda. But Honda has said it will close its Swindon plant next year. The Tata group (Jaguar, Land Rover) and the BMW group (Mini) maintain significant activity in Great Britain, but Brexit could lead these carmakers to take drastic decisions. PSA has threatened to close its British plants in the event of a no-deal with EU.
- As a result, among the ten best-selling cars in Britain in 2020, only two are locally assembled. These are the Nissan Qashqai (fifth sale) and the BMW Mini (sixth sale).
- The biggest sales come from abroad: the Ford Fiesta (first sale) comes from Germany, the Volkswagen Golf (second sale) comes from Germany, the Ford Focus (third sale) comes from Germany, the Opel Corsa (fourth sale) comes from Spain, the Mercedes A Class (seventh sale) comes from Germany, the Volkswagen Tiguan (eighth sale) comes from Germany, the Toyota Yaris (ninth sale) comes from France and the Kia Sportage (tenth sale) comes from Slovakia.
- In total, 87% of passenger cars sold in Britain are imported from abroad, compared to 82% in France and 63% in Germany.

Among the 10 best-selling cars in Italy, 3 are produced in Italy
- Italian carmakers have transferred part of their car production mainly to Poland, where Fiat had a very old subsidiary. But it was above all the collapse of the Alfa-Romeo and Lancia brands that forced the Italian car industry to refocus on the giant Fiat. The consequence of this virtual monopoly created a desire among customers for more diversified competition, which caused a growing demand for foreign models and a weakening of Fiat's position in its national soil. In these conditions, the Fiat group only represents 23% of the Italian market in 2020 against 30% in 2005 and 45% in 1995. This significant weakening on its own national market is one of the reasons which pushed Fiat to join forces with another carmaker to avoid disappearing over time.
- Among the ten best-selling cars in Italy in 2020, only three are made in Italy: the Fiat Panda (first sale), Fiat 500X (fourth sale) and Jeep Renegade (sixth sale).
- The other models from abroad are mainly B-segment models: the Lancia Ypsilon (second sale) comes from Poland, the Renault Clio (third sale) comes from Turkey and Slovenia, the Fiat 500 (fifth sale) comes from Poland, the Volkswagen T-Roc (seventh sale) is from Portugal, the Citroën C3 (eighth sale) is from Slovakia, the Dacia Duster (ninth sale) is from Romania and the Opel Corsa (tenth sale) is from Spain.
- In total, 85% of passenger cars sold in Italy are imported from abroad.

The Korean auto market has not suffered from the lockdown

The Korean auto market has not suffered from the lockdown
- South Korea has been relatively unaffected by the coronavirus, as health security measures were put in place there very quickly. Another consequence of the good management of this crisis was that no lockdown was imposed in Korea, unlike China, Europe and the United States, which prevented the local automotive market from collapsing as in these countries due to plant and dealerships closures.
- The graph below on the right shows that the Korean market did not decline in April-May 2020, since it exceeds the pre-crisis level and even the month of June saw a clear catch-up which compensates the figures of January-February which were a little weak. Thus, over the first 7 months of 2020, the Korean market (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) is growing by 6.9%.
- However, the automobile production in Korea has not been able to prevent a decline in its volumes. The decrease observed in January-February 2020 (-29.6% and -27.6%) and especially in April-May (-23.1% and -38.1%) is explained rather by a lower external demand than by a drop in sales on the national land. The April and May lockdown months were indeed particularly difficult in Europe and the United States, which caused a collapse of sales in these regions, including those of Korean models.
- However, since June 2020, the Korean auto production has returned to its last year level and the coming months should confirm this trend. Over the first seven months of 2020, the production volume in Korea fell by 21.1% compared to -36.7% in Europe, -29.4% in the United States, -28.5% in Japan and -11,6% in China.

Among the 10 best-selling cars in the USA, 8 are made in the USA

Among the 10 best-selling cars in the USA, 8 are made in the USA
- American carmakers have gradually relocated part of their car production to Canada and Mexico, but these relocations have ceased in recent years, without however any significant relocation of vehicles on the US soil.
- On the other hand, we observe that the United States achieves a performance which is unmatched by any European country, meaning importing less than 50% of cars from abroad. Imports are Germany at 63%, France at 82%, Italy at 85% and England at 87%, while the United States is only at 40%. However, Europe as a whole has only 15% of imports and only one car built outside the region among its top 10: the Renault Clio, which is produced at 2/3 in Turkey and 1/3 in Slovenia.
- By comparison, in Asian automobile producers countries, the import rate is even lower: in Korea it is 12%, in Japan it is 6% and in China it is 5%.
- The low rate of imports observed in the United States can be explained in part because the first three major sales, the Ford F Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram, are pick-ups historically produced in the United States and which find the vast majority of their customers locally.
- As a result, the only imported models among the 10 bestsellers in 2020 are the Toyota RAV4 (fourth sale) which comes from Canada and the Chevrolet Equinox (eighth sale) which comes from Canada and Mexico.

The Chinese utility vehicle market grew in 2020
- 詳細
The Chinese utility vehicle market grew in 2020
- While the Chinese passenger car (PC) market has fallen by 18.4% over the first seven months of 2020, due to the coronavirus crisis which has led to several weeks of lockdown, with however a clear improvement observed since May last (+ 7.2% in May, + 2.1% in June, + 8.9% in July), the Chinese market for utility vehicles (UV) grew by 14.4% over the same period. From April, the Chinese UV market exceeded its pre-crisis levels (+ 31.6% in April, + 47.9% in May, + 63.2% in June, +59, 4% in July).
- This significant growth can be explained by the fact that the 2018 and 2019 years suffered from economic tensions between China and the United States which had caused a drop in world trade and a drop in growth in China itself. This growth decline in China had significantly reduced China's demand for utility vehicles. We are therefore now witnessing a sharp increase in demand, supported in particular by public investment.
- With 650,000 more units registered between April and July 2020, the UV market in China reached a level never reached during this period. However, if these this trend reflects an anticipations of purchases supported by public investments, it is possible to see a backfire effect in the last 2 months of 2020 or at the beginning of 2021.
