Production of the Toyota Yaris Cross has just started in Onnaing

- The Toyota plant located in Onnaing (North of France) has just started the production of the Yaris Cross on July 5, 2021. It marks Toyota's entry into the B-SUV segment, the CHR being rather marketed in the C-SUV segment. and the RAV4 in the D-SUV segment. After the gradual increase in the size, weight and price of the Japanese brand's SUVs, there was therefore a place under the CHR and RAV4, a space now filled by the Yaris Cross.

- With this new model based on the TNGA platform (also used by the Yaris), Toyota intends to compete with high volume models in Europe in this segment, such as the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 Aircross, Fiat 500 X, Volkswagen T-Cross, Ford Puma and Opel Mokka. Compared to the Yaris which continues its career, the Yaris Cross is longer (4.18 m or 24 cm more), wider (1.76 m or 1 cm more) and higher (1.56 m or 5 cm more). But it is 5 cm shorter than the Renault Captur and 12 cm shorter than the Peugeot 2008.

- The carmaker's goal is to produce 150,000 Yaris Cross and 150,000 Yaris at Onnaing each year, meaning 300,000 units in total, which represents the plant's maximum capacity. As the Yaris' demand exceed 150,000 units per year, the Czech Kolinplant will help to produce the Yaris, with an estimated capacities of 100,000 additional units per year. Remember that the Kolinplant produces the Toyota Aygo and has just stopped assembling the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108, therefore freeing up capacities for the Yaris.

- The Yaris Cross is expected to contribute to the development of Toyota's sales in Europe, which targets 1.5 million vehicles in 2025 with an electrification rate of 90%. The Yaris Cross is only offered as a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter, 116-hp hybrid engine.

The Tesla Model 3 sold better than the Renault Zoe in France in the first half of 2021

- The Tesla Model 3 sold better than the Renault Zoé in France in the first half of 2021, with 13,084 units compared to 11,652 for the French model. This result seems minor, but it reveals a stagnation of the French brand which had been the pioneer in battery electric vehicle in the 21st century, and which had managed to gradually impose the Zoé on the French market. Renault therefore had the opportunity to develop the electric car market to its own benefit thanks to the lead it had taken in this market, against its competitors.

- This situation shows that under the current conditions of the electric vehicle market, the first customers are moving towards the higher category, meaning from the D-segment, while B-segment, apart from company vehicles or the second house vehicle, does not has not yet convinced a large number of customers, a consequence of an access price that is too high for this segment.

- At the European level, the sales gap between the two cars is even greater as there are 65,348 Tesla Model 3 sold in the first half of 2021 in Europe against 31,411 Renault Zoé.

- Despite that, the Renault Zoe remains the most produced electric car in Europe in the first half of 2021, with 31,411 units, ahead of the Volkswagen ID3 (30,334 units), Volkswagen ID4 (24,361 units), Hyundai Kona EV (21,354 units), Peugeot e-208 (19,141 units), Volkswagen e-Up (17,883 units), Fiat 500 e (17,514 units) and Nissan Leaf (15,562 units).

- But this situation may not last with the ramp-up of Volkswagen ID3 and ID4 which are not yet on highest sales rate. Regarding the electric Renault Twingo, it does not seem that it took customers from the Zoe, its sales being too low (7,557 units) and its dimensions being smaller than those of the Zoe, thus targeting another category of buyers.

Monthly sales of plug-in electric vehicles in China

- Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China continued to grow in the first five months of 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020. The current pace of sales stands at 160,000 units per month, when it did not reached 80,000 units in May 2019 and May 2020. Over the five months of 2021, BEV sales in China total 729,000 units.

- Annual sales volume stood at 833,423 units in 2019 and 995,397 units in 2020, representing 3.9% of the Chinese market (all engines combined) in 2019 and 4.9% in 2020. In 2021, Inovev forecasts expect sales to a level between 1.5 million units and 1.8 million units, representing a market share of around 9%.

- Sales of plug-in hybrid cars (PHEVs) in China continue to grow in 2021, but slower than those of battery electric vehicles, as growth does not exceed 140% for PHEV sales in the first five months of 2021 compared to in the first five months of 2020, when it reached 314% for BEV sales, compared to an exceptionally low basis (due to Covid-19) for both BEVs and PHEVs.

- The current pace of PHEV sales is nearly 40,000 units per month, while it did not exceed 25,000 units in May 2019 and 20,000 in May 2020. Over the five months of 2021, PHEV sales in China total 154,000 units. The annual sales volume stood at 224,215 units in 2019 and 244,393 units in 2020, representing 1% of the Chinese market in 2019 and 1.2% in 2020.

- In 2021, Inovev forecasts expect an annual volume of 300,000 units, representing a market share of around 1.5%.

Stellantis will continue vehicles production at Ellesmere Port

- The PSA group, which had not yet merged with the FCA group, had announced that production of the future Opel Astra (scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021) would be transferred from the two plants in Gliwice (Poland) and Ellesmere Port (United Kingdom) to the plant in Rüsselsheim (Germany). As a result, the plants in Gliwice and Ellesmere Port were exposed to closures.

- Today, the Stellantis group (created from the merger of PSA and FCA) announces that the Ellesmere Port plant will not close, as significant aid from the British state would have saved the plant. Stellantis has indicated that this plant will start from 2022 the production of battery electric versions of the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, Opel Combo and Vauxhall Combo assembled until today at the Vigoplant (Spain) which is saturated due to the strong demand for the thermal versions as well as for the Peugeot 2008, also produced in this plant. In addition, the latest series of Citroën C4 Spacetourercontinues to be produced until 2022.

- The Stellantis group believes that the production volume of electric vehicles should increase considerably in the coming years and that it makes sense to create at the Ellesmere Port plant an electric vehicle production centerfor the Stellantis group. We can suppose that this plant, which produced only 32,000 vehicles in 2020, will host in the future battery electric versions of the Toyota ProAce City and future Fiat Doblo, based on the same platform as the Berlingo and Partner. The capacity of the Ellesmere Port plant is now 100,000 vehicles per year, but could be doubled by 2030 to face the demand.
