Inovev forecasts 20,000 units a year for the new Audi E-Tron Sportback
- It was recently reported in one of our Auto-Analyzes that the Audi E-Tron produced in Belgium in the plant of Forest (Brussels) started at a low production rate, as its sales will not exceed 20,000 units in 2019 while the carmaker’s target was set at 45,000 units per year.
- The launch of this first Audi BEV cannot predict the success of future VW group's BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). Indeed, the Audi E-Tron is a D segment SUV of a premium brand sold at a starting price of 85,000 euros, while the VW ID 3, which will be launched in 2020, is a C segment sedan from a mainstream brand, the first in Europe, with a price which will not exceed 40,000 euros. This model will therefore target at a wider market.
- Regarding the Audi E-Tron, the carmaker has announced a new coupe version (named Sportback) that will be added to the current E-Tron. Audi hopes to double the sales volume of E-Tron with two different bodies.
- The new E-Tron Sportback has the same technical characteristics as the standard E-Tron and will be produced in the same Belgian plant in Forest, at a rate of 20,000 to 25,000 units per year according to Inovev.
- Inovev believes that the E-Tron models will be able to get Audi closer to its initial goal of 45,000 units per year, as the two models are not targeted exactly the same customer base.
- As a reminder, the Audi E-Tron use the MLB platform and not yet the SEM platforms used on the Volkswagen ID.

Aston-Martin unveiled its first SUV
- The British luxury firm Aston-Martin has unveiled its first SUV, named DBX. Until now, the firm of Gaydon only offered coupes and cabriolets, and a sedan, but never a SUV. It has therefore followed the strategy of its competitors such as Porsche, Maserati or Lamborghini, offering a luxury SUV, as this body sales continue to increase worldwide and represent 40% of the global market in 2019.
- Aston-Martin has built a plant, especially for this new model, with a production capacity of 10,000 vehicles a year in Saint Athan, Wales (United Kingdom). Aston-Martin plans to sell 10,000 units of the DBX each year, which will be added to the 4,000 coupes and cabriolets produced annually in Gaydon.
- The new Aston-Martin SUV (which is the first 5-seat model of the brand) will be marketed in Europe, North America and China, but all models will come out of the Saint Athan assembly lines.
- Its competitors are the Porsche Cayenne, Maserati Levante, Lamborghini Urus, and to some extent the Bentley Bentayga.
- 5.04 m length, 2.00 m wide and 1.68m high, the DBX is equipped with a gasoline twin turbo V8 4-liter engine of 550ch developed by Mercedes AMG. The weight of DBX is 2,245 kg.

The future PSA-FCA group will have to manage 14 different brands

The future PSA-FCA group will have to manage 14 different brands
- The PSA-FCA merger will enable the world's fourth largest group to have 14 different brands, more than the number of brands present in the Volkswagen Group. These brands will be: Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel, Vauxhall, Fiat, Alfa-Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Abarth, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Chrysler.
- On these 14 brands, four have exceeded one million sales in 2018 (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Jeep). Four brands are considered Premium brands (Alfa-Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Abarth) and produce less than 100,000 units per year.
- The new group has 22 different platforms including 14 used on FCA models and 8 PSA models. One of the first project will be to reduce the number of platforms and replace several (old) FCA platforms by the more modern PSA ones, essentially CMP and EMP2 named platforms. The group will create new Fiat models based on PSA platforms. This evolution will also open the possibility to electrify some models of FCA, today to impossible to electrify, due to lack of appropriate platform.
- The platforms of the large Jeep and Ram pickups will remain more or less similar, while those of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger / Challenger, reminiscence from the DaimlerChrysler group, will be cancelled.
- On the other hand, the “Giorgio” platform (with longitudinal engine) which is used today by Alfa-Romeo and Maserati, could be used for future Peugeot, Citroën and DS high-range models, and also for the possible renewed of Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger / Challenger.
- It is to note that the Ferrari brand is no longer part of the FCA group since 2016.

Tesla adds a pickup to its range

Tesla adds a pickup to its range
- Tesla, The Californian carmakers of 100% electric cars (BEVs), has unveiled its fifth model, after the launch of Model S (2013),
Model X (2015), Model 3 (2018) and Model Y (2019). This time is a pickup with futuristic lines, suggesting a stealth aircraft.
Model X (2015), Model 3 (2018) and Model Y (2019). This time is a pickup with futuristic lines, suggesting a stealth aircraft.
- This 100% electric pickup, named Cybertruck, will be in production from the autumn of 2021. Despite its unusual style, the Cybertruck use the codes of the pick-up segment, with a cabin designed for six passengers and a cargo bed that can carry 1.5 tons of goods. However, it contrasts with a body made of ultra-resistant steel and with a set of batteries that will allow it to get an estimated range of 800km (WLTP cycle), a range never obtained until then by a BEV.
- The Tesla Cybertruck will be marketed in a highly competitive market, but very traditional, because pick-up customers, especially American, are very conservative and very devoted to their favorite brand. Cybertruck competitors are mainly Ford (Series F), Chevrolet (Silverado) Golden Dodge (Ram). The Tesla pickup will also compete with the RivianR1T, also a BEV pick-up but with a more conventional style.
- In conclusion, Inovev remains skeptical about the future of this new Tesla model. The sales volume could be between 25,000 and 50,000 units per year. Announced price started at $40,000 for the basic model (250 km of range of autonomy), which is $10,000 more than the basic version of the Ford F-150. The top range is set at $70,000 (800 km of range autonomy).

In 2019, Tesla has 16% of the global EV market (BEV + PHEV)
- Details
In 2019, Tesla has 16% of the global EV market (BEV + PHEV)
- The Californian carmaker Tesla has seen its sales grown strongly since the launch in 2018 of the D segment Model 3 sedan. In 2019, on the first 9 months, Tesla becomes the world leader in the market for electric vehicles (100% electric - BEV and plug-in hybrids - PHEV) with a market share of 16%, far ahead of the Chinese BYD (12% ) and the French-Japanese group Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (9%).
- In comparison, in the same period, Toyota and Volkswagen have respectively 12.6% and 12.2% of the world vehicle market, all engines combined.
- Tesla's position is already very strong in the market of BEV and PHEV, even before the launch of the Model Y SUV, the Cybertruck pickup truck and a future roadster.
- On the other hand, the German carmakers are preparing an offensive in the market of the BEV, in particular the Volkswagen group with its ID models range, the Daimler group with its EQ models range and the BMW group with its i models range. These carmakers are therefore expected to catch up with Tesla in a few years.
- Also, Chinese carmakers can see their influence increase significantly in the BEV market due to the introduction of progressive quotas on the Chinese market, supporting the production of electric cars.
- Finally, it should be noted that Tesla's market share among all carmakers and all energies does not exceed 0.4% in 2019.
