The Chinese market of battery electric vehicle in 2020
- China registered 1,271,958 battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles in 2020, up from 1,177,421 units in 2019, an 8% increase year-over-year. These vehicles represented 6.3% of the Chinese passenger car market in 2020, compared to 5.5% in 2019.
- This volume is lower than that recorded in Europe in 2020 (1,364,813 sales). However, the number of BEVs is higher in China than in Europe, reaching 995,397 units in China (+16% compared to 2019) while it does not exceed 745,684 units in Europe.
- It seems that the Chinese electric market has been boosted by the arrival of Tesla “Made in China” at the beginning of 2020, as the American carmaker has become a leader in this market in the first year of its local production, both at the level brand and model. The Model 3 thus became the best-selling electric model in China in 2020, with 137,459 units, outstanding models like the BAIC EU-Series or BYD Yuan.
- New models arrived on the Chinese market in 2020, with some success such as the NIO ES6, Weltmeister EX5, XPeng P7, but it is above all the success of the Wuling Hong Guan Mini EV that impresses, with 127,651 sales from the first year. This very compact model is in the wave of the Smart EQ Fortwo, as it measures 2.92 m long, 1.49 m wide and 1.62 m high. It has a range of 120 km to 170 km depending on the battery capacity. This model became the cheapest electric vehicle in China.

Review of electric car sales in Europe in 2020
- 说明
Review of electric car sales in Europe in 2020
- The large Europe (European Union + United Kingdom + Norway + Switzerland + Iceland) registered 1,364,813 battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles in 2020, compared to 559,871 in 2019, which represents an increase of 144 % year over year. These vehicles represented 11.5% of the European passenger car market in 2020, against 3.5% in 2019. The share of these models tripled between 2019 and 2020. This 2020 total is broken down into 745,684 BEVs (+107% compared to 2019) and 619,129 PHEVs (+210%).
- The carmaker offer increases (both BEV and PHEV) and bonuses has pushed the strong sales growth of electric vehicles in Europe in 2020, even if demand is concentrated in a few countries, as in the 29 European countries Listed nearly 80% of sales of this type of car are concentrated in 6 markets: Germany, France, England, Norway, the Netherlands and Italy.
- Given the generally high retail price of these vehicles, it makes sense that the demanding markets are the richest European countries, but what will happen when the sale of pure thermal vehicles will be banned? We could then see a drastic drop in sales of new cars in some markets, because buyers (at least non-professional individuals) will not necessarily be able to acquire an electric car. These customers could transfer to second hand vehicles (thermal or electric) or keep their old vehicles longer.
- The best-selling vehicle in Europe in the BEVs category is the Renault Zoé which for the first time reached 100,000 annual sales, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (87,000 sales) and the new Volkswagen ID3 (57,000 sales).

- The Renault-Nissan group sold 7.7 million light vehicles (passenger and utility) in 2020, down 24% compared to 2019. This is one of the biggest drops recorded in 2020 for a carmaker. The Franco-Japanese group is suffering from a significant drop in its three main entities, the Nissan group (Nissan, Infiniti, Datsun), the Renault group (Renault, Alpine, Dacia, Samsung, Lada, Jinbei-Huasong) and Mitsubishi Motors.
- The Nissan group suffered a drop of 22.2% in 2020, its sales having fallen to 4 million units, the Renault group suffered a fall of 21.3% last year, its sales having fallen to 2,9 million units and Mitsubishi suffered a drop of 33.1% last year, its sales falling to 820,000 units.
- However, the Renault-Nissan group remains the third largest carmaker in the world, behind Toyota and Volkswagen. It is still far ahead of the GM and Hyundai-Kia groups, which also recorded sharp declines last year.

• Europe remains its largest market, with 1.89 million vehicles, or 25% of its global sales (compared to 27% in 2019).

• These four markets represent 62% of the Renault-Nissan group's worldwide sales in 2020.

The Toyota group sold 9,528,438 vehicles in 2020
- The Toyota group (Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus, Hino) has published its sales figures for the year 2020. Its worldwide sales reached 9.53 million units including heavy utility vehicles (passenger and utility vehicles), which represents a drop of 11.3% compared to 2019. Without heavy utility vehicles, the Toyota group has sold 9.39 million light vehicles (passenger and light utility vehicles). In both cases, the Japanese group is ahead (for the first time since 2015) of Volkswagen, as the German group did not exceed 9.12 million light vehicles and 9,31 million vehicles including heavy utility vehicles (-15,2% compared to 2019). The collapse of the European market caused the Volkswagen group a loss of 900,000 sales in 2020, while the Toyota group lost only 100,000 in the same market last year. It was this difference of 800,000 units that caused Toyota to overtake Volkswagen in 2020.

- The breakdown by market is as follows:

• These four markets represent 69% of the Toyota group's global sales in 2020 (compared to 67% in 2019).

The FCA group sold 3.55 million vehicles in 2020
- 说明
The FCA group sold 3.55 million vehicles in 2020
- The FCA group (Fiat, Alfa-Roméo, Lancia, Maserati, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram) sold 3.55 million light vehicles (passenger and utility) in 2020, down 19.6% compared to 2019. From January 1, 2021, FCA's figures will be combined with those of PSA, as the two carmakers have merged to give birth to the Stellantis group.
- For 2020, the FCA group remains predominant in the American market, thanks to its historical local brands Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram. The carmaker sold 1,824,408 vehicles in this market last year, equivalent to 51% of its global sales. As the PSA group does not sell in this market, but mainly in Europe, the Stellantis group will focus more in Europe at the global level. The American market will only represent around 25% of sales and the European market around 50%.
- FCA group's worldwide sales in 2020 break down as follows:
• The USA remains its main market, with 1.82 million vehicles, or 51% of its worldwide sales (compared to 50% in 2019).
• Europe is its second market, with 810,000 vehicles, or 23% of its worldwide sales (compared to 29% in 2019).
• Brazil is its third market, with 430,000 vehicles, or 12% of its global sales (compared to 10% in 2019).
• These three markets represent 86% of the FCA group's worldwide sales.
- China only represents 40,000 sales in 2020, or 1% of its global sales. As for PSA, the FCA group is poorly performing on the Chinese market, and the Stellantis group will have to initiate a whole new strategy in order to be able to relaunch its sales in the world's largest market.
