Volkswagen Group electric vehicle sales in 2021
The Volkswagen group sold 452,900 100% electric cars worldwide in 2021, including 92,700 in China (20% of the total). This sales volume is double that recorded in 2020 (+95%) and quadruple that recorded in 2019 (+325%).

The breakdown by brand is as follows: Volkswagen sold 263,200 units (58% of the total), Audi 81,900 (18% of the total), Skoda 49,100 (11% of the total), Porsche 41,300 (9% of the total), Seat 13,000 (3% of the total) and Cupra 4,400 (1% of the total).

The breakdown by model is as follows: 119,600 Volkswagen ID4, 75,500 Volkswagen ID3, 49,200 Audi E-tron, 44,700 Skoda Enyaq, 41,400 Volkswagen e-Up and 41,300 Porsche Taycan. These six models represent 371,700 units, or 82% of all German group electric car sales.

The rest consists of the Audi Q4 (28,371 units), Volkswagen ID6 (18,753 units), Seat Mii (13,000 units), Skoda Citigo (4,400 units), Cupra Born (4,400 units), Audi E-tron GT (4,329 units), Volkswagen e-Golf (2,003 units) and the Volkswagen e-Caddy, Volkswagen e-Crafter and Volkswagen Transporter utility vehicles which total 5,944 units.

The volume of 452,900 electric cars sold by the Volkswagen Group worldwide in 2021 represents exactly 10% of all electric car sales worldwide. The German manufacturer is the world's third largest electric car manufacturer behind Tesla (936,000 sales) and GM (546,000 sales). It is also the leading manufacturer of electric cars in Europe and has just started manufacturing ID3, ID4 and ID6 in China.

Renault wants to go all-electric in 2030
The Renault group has just announced that the Renault brand will become 100% electric in Europe in 2030, but that it will continue to offer thermal engines for countries outside Europe. Remember that last year the Renault brand had set a target of 90% electric sales in Europe in 2030. The program is therefore accelerated, and the manufacturer will therefore have to gradually abandon the thermal versions of the Twingo, Clio, Captur, Arkana , Mégane, Scenic, Austral (replacing the Kadjar) and Kangoo. The Koléos, Espace and Talisman will be discontinued in 2022.

The new generation of 100% electric Renault will arrive between 2022 and 2025. These are the Mégane E-Tech, the R5 E-Tech, the R4 E-Tech and the Alpine models (Mégane, SUV, R5, A110) which will all be electric from 2026.

Renault wants to produce 400,000 electric cars per year in France, which is a figure higher than the brand's entire French production in 2020 or 2021, which is around 350,000 units annually. Renault will use four of the five platforms developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group for electric vehicles (see below).

There remain questions concerning the future of hybrids and plug-in hybrids, the future of light commercial vehicles and the strategy concerning the Dacia and Lada subsidiaries which has not yet been precisely defined.

It should be noted that the achievement of Renault's objectives of going all-electric in 2030 for Europe and of manufacturing 400,000 electric cars per year in France will depend heavily on demand in Europe for this type of vehicle.

The Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo will be 100% electric in PC version
The Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo, launched in 2018, totaled 280,000 units produced in 2021, mainly from Spain (Vigo) and Portugal (Mangualde). They are manufactured in utility vehicle (LUV) and passenger vehicle (PC) versions. Utility versions represent 80% of all these models, or 223,500 units in 2021, with other versions representing only 56,500 units last year.

These models are equipped with petrol, diesel and 100% electric engines. In 2021, electric motors accounted for less than 5% of sales for all of these models.

However, the Stellantis group has decided to only offer the 100% electric version on these models in the passenger car version from January 1, 2022, which seems quite audacious given the current demand. Are we going to witness – as with the Smarts which have gone from all-thermal to all-electric – a drop in sales of the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo in passenger car version? It is quite possible, especially since the fall in sales of these models has already started between 2019 and 2021, when they were still available in three different engines. In the scenario envisaged by Inovev, it will no longer be 56,500 annual sales of these models, but probably less than 10,000, because the price is much higher in the electric version than in the thermal version. This kind of decision undoubtedly contributes to the decline of the automobile markets as a whole, the manufacturers now betting more on profitability (linked to the high prices of vehicles) and no longer on volumes.

The new Lucid Air intends to compete with the Tesla Model S
The production of the Air model of the Lucid brand – 100% electric sedan manufactured in the United States (in Casa Grande in the State of Arizona) with the help of Chinese financing – started in September 2021. A volume of 630 copies sold out between September and December 2021. The automaker said it had 13,000 orders for this model and that its US factory capacity had been set at 34,000 cars per year, but that these could be increased in case of significant success of the model. The Lucid Air is intended for worldwide distribution, like the Tesla Model S it intends to compete with.

Recall that the Lucid Air is a large 4.97 m long 5-door sedan equipped with a 480 hp, 670 hp or 1,080 hp electric motor and a 112 kWh battery allowing a range of 650 km to 837 km depending on the version. The car has rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Its price in the United States is 169,000 dollars, or 144,000 euros in Europe (estimated price), which places it above a Tesla Model S Plaid which is priced at 130,000 dollars in the United States (for 637 km of autonomy) but below a Mercedes EQS which is priced from 130,000 to 160,000 euros in Europe.

The Lucid Air (whose company is run by a former Tesla engineer) is therefore at the top of the range of 100% electric cars. This positioning is very different from that of Chinese electric cars, which tend to invest in the low-end and mid-range of electric vehicles, resulting in much larger volumes (the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV was sold in 427,685 units in 2021 in China , making it the best-selling and most produced car in China).

Renault-Samsung plant in Korea will produce Geely models in 2024
For about ten years, the Korean plant in Busan which belongs to Renault and which manufactures Renault-Samsungs for the Korean market but also some Renaults for the European market has been experiencing difficulties, facing the domination of the Hyundai-Kia group which owns 72% of the Korean market. Renault-Samsung Korea's sales do not exceed 4% of this market.

The French manufacturer tried to produce Renault Koleos and Latitudes there for the European market, then Nissan X-Trails for the American market. An attempt to export its cars from Korea to China ended in failure. Calibrated to produce 300,000 cars per year, the Busan plant exceeded 250,000 units per year only once, that was in 2010, and production volume then fell to 150,000 units in 2012, then 100,000 in 2015.

Since that date, production has been around 100,000 to 150,000 per year depending on the year. In 2021, the Busan plant benefited from the export of 40,000 Renault Arkana to Europe and the sale in Korea of 40,000 Samsung XM3 (its twin brother). These two models represent 60% of production at the Busan plant. But this success is random and will only last a few years.

This is why Renault has decided to completely change its strategy regarding the Busan plant, which is operating at less than half capacity. From 2024, the Busan plant will produce thermal and hybrid vehicles based on Geely models (the largest independent Chinese manufacturer). These models will adopt the AMC platform developed at Volvo in Sweden, as well as the hybrid engines of the Chinese manufacturer. They will be marketed in Korea and then exported throughout Asia.
