The Dodge Ram overtook the Chevrolet Silverado in the first quarter of 2019
In the first half of 2019, for the first time, the Ram brand (formerly the  pick-up division of the Dodge brand owned by the FCA group) surpassed the GM group's Chevrolet brand in the US heavy truck segment.

The Ram pickup, renewed in 2018, sold 120,000 units in the first three months of 2019, while the Chevrolet Silverado, also renewed in 2018, did not exceed 115,000 units. In recent years, Dodge Ram sales had moved closer to Chevrolet Silverado sales in the U.S. market, demonstrating that the Ram could exceed it at some point. However, the gap between the two models remains small.

Inovev will observe the US big pickup market in the coming months to see if the Ram will be able to outperform the Silverado over the long term.

This heavy truck market represents more than 2.3 million vehicles per year (out of a total of 17.5 million vehicles of all categories combined) and it is the Ford F-Series that has traditionally and largely dominated this market for many years, exceeding 900,000 annual units in its best years.

These three vehicles have been leading the American market for all vehicles since the 1980s.

In 2018, 909,330 Ford F-Series, 585,581 Chevrolet Silverado and 536,980 Dodge Ram were sold. These three models are ahead of the GMC Sierra (219,554 units) and Toyota Tundra (118,258 units) in their category.

Global Automotive Production in 2018
Global automobile production (PC+LCV) fell by 1.3% in 2018 compared to 2017, mainly due to the decline in the world's largest market, China (-2.8%), which now accounts for 30% of global registrations.

Global automobile production (LCV+LV) therefore fell to 94,340,947 units in 2018, compared with 95,583,533 units in 2017.

By region, we note:

• Asia produced 51,991,785 vehicles in 2018 (55% of world production), down 2% from 2017.
• Europe (including Turkey) produced 19,180,034 vehicles in 2018 (20% of world production), down 2.7% from 2017.
• North America produced 16,979,676 vehicles in 2018 (18% of world production), down 2% from 2017.
• South America produced 3,227,772 vehicles in 2018 (4% of world production), up 1% from 2017.
• The BRUS Region (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Serbia) produced 1,851,876 vehicles in 2018 (2% of world production), up 12.7% compared to 2017.
• Africa produced 1,109,804 vehicles in 2018 (1% of world production), up 21.5% from 2017.
• Oceania stopped producing vehicles in 2018,i.e. Australia ,as New Zealand had ceased production in the 1990s.

Ford will also remove the Ka from its European product range
Ford Europe decided last year to reduce its exposure in Europe by reducing the number of models available to customers on the continent.

After the discontinuation of its C-Max and Grand C-Max compact (C segment) MPVs in 2019, followed by the (D segment ) Mondeo and (D segment) Galaxy and S-Max MPVs scheduled for 2020, another model has been added to the list of deleted models. This is the Ford Ka (A-segment sedan) that was imported into Europe from India and Brazil.

As a result, only the Fiesta (B-segment sedan), Focus (C-segment sedan), Puma (B-segment SUV), Kuga (C-segment SUV) and the Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom and Transit SUVs will remain in Ford's European range.

The Puma SUV will be unveiled in the coming weeks. It will gradually replace the Ecosport, SUV of Indian and Brazilian origin, which is also produced in Ford's Romanian plant in Craiova, where the Puma will be manufactured.

Ford Europe's strategy is to focus on a limited range of products targeting growing segments. Commercial vehicles remain the American automaker's most profitable models in Europe, because they are cheaper to produce than a sedan or minivan and are produced in large quantities. The Fiesta and Focus sedans are produced in large quantities. SUVs are generally sold at a higher price than the sedans from which they are derived; however, at Ford in Europe SUV volume is insufficient. Ford is therefore focusing its efforts on promoting its SUVs.

What would be the advantages of selling JLR to PSA?
If an agreement between the FCA and PSA groups fails, the French manufacturer could switch its focus to the Jaguar Land-Rover group, which belongs to the Indian group Tata Motors.

The British luxury car group is currently experiencing real difficulties due in particular to the uncertainties linked to the introduction of Brexit, the drop in diesel vehicle sales and the decline in the Chinese automobile market. In addition, the Indian group Tata Motors had invested heavily in diversifying the range of Jaguar and Land Rover models just before the Brexit vote, and the return on investment seems to be resulting in heavy losses.

Moreover , the launch of the British group's first electric car, the Jaguar i-Pace, and the construction of a new plant in Slovakia, in Nitra, required major investments, at a time when the European and global automotive market was beginning to decline. The manufacturer's debt is now very high and the manufacturer has recently decided to drastically reduce costs. It will cut 10% of its workforce and slow down its production (its factories will be shut down for a week in April).

It would not be surprising in this context if Tata Motors would consider selling the JLR group to another manufacturer. The PSA group seems best placed to acquire Jaguar and Land Rover, as the French manufacturer is looking to expand its offer, particularly in the Premium category where it is currently not very active. The DS brand would need to develop at least another ten years in order to achieve real legitimacy in this category.

Inovev forecasts 200,000 new Mazda CX30 SUVs per year
At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Japanese automaker Mazda unveiled a new C-segment SUV that will fit between the CX3 and CX5. It is called the CX30 because there is already a CX4 on the Chinese market that has a completely different body.

The CX30 is based on the platform of the recent Mazda 3 sedan, with which it could  compete. The new model responds to the strong worldwide demand for C-segment SUVs.

The CX30 will compete with general-purpose SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar, Peugeot 3008, Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland, Ford Kuga and Jeep Compass.

Mazda SUVs already represent half of the manufacturer's sales in 2018 (more than the world average) and it is very likely that the launch of the CX30 will further increase the share of SUVs in Mazda's sales.

Its length of 4.39 m places it halfway between the CX3 that appeared four years earlier (4.28 m) and the CX5  that was renewed last year (4.55 m). By way of comparison, a Nissan Qashqai is 4.37m long and a Peugeot 3008 4.45m long.

Logically, the Mazda3's engines should be found under the hood of the CX30, i.e. the 122 hp 2.0 SkyActiv-G 4-cylinder petrol engine and the 116 hp 1.8 SkyActiv-D 4-cylinder diesel engine, but probably not the 175 hp 2.2 engine  of the CX5.

Inovev expects 200,000 sales per year of the Mazda CX30, which will be manufactured in Japan at the Hofu site.
