The new Chinese carmaker Li Auto has produced 380,000 cars in 2023
- The Chinese carmaker Li Auto, created in 2015, launched its first vehicle on the Chinese market in 2021. Named Li One, the vehicle which adopts the style of a large SUV is powered by a plug-in hybrid gasoline engine (PHEV) and not by a pure electric engine as with most of the new Chinese carmakers that have appeared since 2015.
- Sold at 90,491 units in China in 2021, the Li One ended its commercial career in July 2023, following problems linked to its design. But new SUVs have taken over in 2022 and 2023: the L7, L8 and L9. These models, very close to each other, differ by their length (from 5.05 m to 5.22 m) and their wheelbase (from 3.00 m to 3.10 m) but their engine is common: it is a 1,500 cc turbo petrol delivering 152 hp (113 kW). The electric motor coupled to it can develop a total of 440 hp (330 kW). The empty weight of these three models each exceeds 2.5 tonnes.
- These models allowed the brand to sell 133,000 vehicles in China in 2022 and 376,000 in 2023, proof that Li Auto has managed to find its place in the Chinese market, more quickly than NIO or Leapmotor for example. Over the first two months of 2024, Li Auto sold 52,000 vehicles in China, representing a potential of 312,000 units for the whole year. In terms of production, Li Auto produced 380,000 vehicles in 2023 compared to 146,000 in 2022.
- Li Auto occupies 13.5% of the Chinese PHEV market in 2023, second behind BYD which represents 47.5% of the Chinese PHEV market. If Li Auto wants to increase its market share in China, it would need to complete its range with battery electric models. A large, battery electric minivan is reportedly about to be launched.

- The Chinese smartphone producer Xiaomi presented its first car, the SU7 (“Speed Ultra” 7), a battery electric D-segment sedan which openly competes with the Tesla Model 3, also from the D segment, sold at 300 000 units in China last year and more than a million since its launch in the country in 2020. The Tesla Model 3 is thus the seventh best-selling car in China in 2023 and the Xiaomi SU7 dreams of taking its place.
- The Xiaomi SU7 will be produced by the Chinese carmaker BAIC Motor in one of its factories located in Beijing at the rate of 100,000 units per year, but the level of orders having already exceeded this production capacity, BAIC Motor will have to increase it (we are talking about 120,000 units for the second half of 2024 and 150,000 units in 2025), to reduce delivery times which today reach between six and eight months depending on the versions.
- The Xiaomi SU7 is based on the “Modena” platformand has an electric motor of 295 hp (220 kW) in the rear-wheel drive version and 665 hp (495 kW) in the all-wheel drive version. The battery has a capacity of 74 kWh, 94 kWh or 101 kWh depending on the version chosen by the customer. The carmaker announces a range of between 700 km and 800 km depending on the CTLC cycle.
- In terms of performance, the Xiaomi SU7 intends to position itself at the level of the Porsche Taycan (265 km/h for the most powerful version) for half the price. But the boss of Xiaomi himself admitted that the company was losing money on each car sold, and that massive price increases would undoubtedly be necessary in the coming months.

Production in Spain: The Opel Corsa remained the most produced model in Spain in 2023
- As in 2020, 2021 and 2022, the Opel Corsa (B segment sedan) remained the most produced model in Spain in 2023. This model, based on the CMP platform since the takeover of Opel by PSA, benefits from a relatively stable commercial career, with a production volume of around 200,000 units per year (225,000 in 2023). The Corsa traditionally benefits from a strong distribution in Germany (under the Opel brand) and in England (under the Vauxhall brand).
- The Peugeot 2008 (B-segment SUV) relocated from France to Spain in 2020 recorded an excellent second place in 2023 as in 2021, ahead of its direct competitor the Renault Captur (B-segment SUV), in third position, with a volume of 172,000 units produced compared to 147,000 units for Renault.
- In fourth position, with 146,000 units produced in 2023, the Volkswagen Polo (B-segment sedan) which was the most produced car in Spain from 2009 to 2019, suffered from the launch of the T-Cross and the Taigo which took much more customers on the Polo than on the competition, because they are very close to the Polo, in the same segment in particular, the T-Cross being an SUV variant of the Polo and the Taigo an SUV coupe variant of the Polo.
- The Volkswagen Polo has lost more than half of its sales and production volume since the launch of these two models. From 300,000 units produced in 2018, the Polo fell to less than 150,000 in 2023. Remember that the T-Cross began its career in 2019 and the Taigo in 2021. These two models weighed down the career of the Polo which will never return to its best levels.

- After being the most produced model in the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2019, the Nissan Qashqai (C-segment SUV) regained its first place in 2023, thanks to the (late) launch of the third generation at the end of 2021, after a fall of its sales recorded in 2020 and 2021. The Qashqai, which had reached a peak of 300,000 units produced in 2012 and 2016, had fallen to 150,000 units in 2020 and just over 100,000 units in 2021. In 2023, The Qashqai recorded 200,000 units produced and regained the top spot in the UK, beating the Mini (B-segment sedan) by a few thousand units. But the Qashqai is still far from its production peak of 300,000 units recorded in 2012 and 2016.
- Compared to the Nissan Qashqai, the Mini benefits from a much more stable commercial career, its production volume hovering around 200,000 annual units each year. The new generation of the Mini being launched at the of 2024, its production for 2023 (185,000 units) remained however among the lowest of the decade.
- In third position, the Toyota Corolla (C-segment sedan) has recorded a relatively stable production volume for around ten years, between 100,000 and 150,000 units per year, if we combine its figures with those of the Toyota Auris which was a simple renamed Corolla marketed between 2007 and 2018.
- In fourth position, the Nissan Juke (B-segment SUV) saw its production volume increase to 100,000 units in 2023 thanks to the (late) launch of its second generation in 2019. But we are still far from the figures reached in 2012 (150,000 units produced) by the first generation.

- The Fiat Panda (A-segment sedan) remained the most produced car in Italy in 2023, with 140,000 units produced near Naples in the south of the country. Since 2012, this model, previously produced in Poland (while the vast majority of Panda production was intended for the Italian market), has been at the top of production in Italy. Production of the Panda experienced a peak in 2019, with 200,000 units produced, before falling to 150,000 units in 2020-2021 and then 120,000 in 2022. The Fiat Panda rose again in 2023 in a context of growth in Italian and European markets but the model is old. It is renamed Pandina in 2024 and is expected to be ended in 2027.
- A new Panda will then be launched on July 24. This new Panda will be a B segment vehicle (and no longer an A-segment like the old Panda renamed Pandina). Its dimensions will be closer to those of the old Punto than to those of the old Panda.
- It should be noted that until 2012, the most produced car in Italy was the Fiat Punto (B segment sedan) which had reached a volume of 450,000 units produced in 2006 before collapsing from 2007 and especially in from 2009. The Punto was stopped in 2018 without being replaced, a strategy which was criticized by many observers. The launch of the new Panda will therefore finally give an successor to the Punto, eight million examples of which were sold in Europe between 1993 and 2018.
- Behind the Panda, we note the good performance of the Jeep Renegade (B-segment SUV) with 85,000 units produced, some of which exported to the United States, which is ahead of the Fiat 500e (battery electric A-segment sedan) and Fiat 500X (B-segment SUV) with 75,000 and 45,000 units produced, respectively. Remember that the Fiat 500 with a thermal engine is produced entirely in Poland.
