2023 Munich Motor Show - Inovev forecasts 5,000 units a year of the new Mercedes AMG GT coupe
- Mercedes is presenting at the 2023 Munich Motor Show the replacement for its AMG GT coupe marketed from 2014 to 2021. This new high-performance coupe will support the recent Mercedes SL (2021) available only in a roadster version from which it takes up the platform and engines.
- It is therefore in a way the coupé version of the Mercedes SL (although the bodies are different) since the SL will never be marketed in a coupé version and the AMG GT will never be marketed in a roadster version (unlike the old AMG GT).
- The management of Mercedes felt that the roadster version of the old AMG GT had killed the commercial career of the old Mercedes SL and that the same mistake should not be made twice.
- For its part, the AMG GT sedan continues its commercial career, but it is obvious that with the development of battery electric engines and increasingly severe penalties on high-displacement sports cars, it will not be easy to sell these cars (AMG GT coupé, SL roadster, AMGT GT sedan) in the next few years, except perhaps in the United States and in the Middle East countries…
- The AMG GT coupé competes with the Porsche 911, BMW M8, Aston-Martin Vantage and Chevrolet Corvette. Inovev is counting on a production of 5,000 units per year of the new AMG GT coupe.
2023 Munich Motor Show - Chinese carmakers may present their Premium models
- 说明
2023 Munich Motor Show - Chinese carmakers may present their Premium models
- The Dongfeng carmaker, which should be present at the Munich show, could reveal its know-how in the design of Premium cars, in a country which represents the largest market for Premium vehicles in Europe, with brands such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche.
- Chinese carmakers have developed electric motorization on a large scale with the support of the Chinese government and have even managed to offer competitive electric cars against foreign brands due to unbeatable prices. At the same time, the design of Chinese cars has made great progress, sometimes surpassing the foreign brands. We can call on foreign designers who have more freedom to create new models, because Chinese carmakers are less timid. The next step was to create premium cars capable of competing with those of foreign brands, often through new brands dedicated to this type of model.
- This is what Japanese carmakers had done in other times, creating Lexus (Toyota), Infiniti (Nissan) and Acura (Honda). This is what the Korean Hyundai-Kia did more recently by creating the Genesis brand.
- However, Chinese carmakers are making a difference by adding electric motors to their Premium models, thus confirming their technological lead. Dongfeng's Premium brand is called Voyah and it could unveil its large battery electric sedan, the I-Land at the Munich show, whose design is signed by Ital Design. Xpeng could unveil its limousine called P7, Changan its Avatr 11 SUV, Leapmotor its C11 SUV.
2023 Munich Motor Show - SAIC wants to build an MG plant in Europe
- 说明
2023 Munich Motor Show - SAIC wants to build an MG plant in Europe
- The Chinese group SAIC, which is the largest automobile producer in China (nearly 5 million vehicles produced in 2022), assembles under license Volkswagens and cars from the GM group (Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac) and also produces the MG, Roewe and Maxus brands. As a reminder, these three brands are the last vestiges of the former British group MG-Rover and the light utility vehicle brand LDV which disappeared in 2005 and 2009 respectively.
- MG, a former British brand, has gradually become the best-selling Chinese brand in Europe. In 2022, 114,000 MG were sold in Europe compared to 53,000 in 2021 and 26,000 in 2020. The brand doubles its sales every year on this continent! In the first 6 months of 2023, MG sold 103,000 cars in Europe (including 40,000 in Great Britain), which suggests that the brand will easily exceed 200,000 sales over the whole year.
- It is in this context that SAIC decided to build an MG assembly plant in Europe, either in Great Britain (its historic country and the one that buys the most MGs in Europe) or in continental Europe.
- For SAIC, this decision makes it possible to support the growing commercial success of MG in Europe but also, in the event that the chosen site is located in the European Union, to by-pass potential barriers to the entry for battery electric vehicles (BEV) produced outside the European Union. SAIC's announcement is not an isolated case as BYD has indicated that it also wants to produce electric cars in Europe. Tesla also plans to build a second assembly plant in Europe, after the one in Berlin (Germany).
2023 Munich Motor Show - BYD plans to produce cars in Europe before 2030
- 说明
2023 Munich Motor Show - BYD plans to produce cars in Europe before 2030
- The Chinese carmaker BYD, specializing in battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids, has quickly become the leading Chinese carmaker and is on the way to becoming the leading carmaker in China ahead of the Volkswagen group. He is exhibiting at the 2023 Munich Motor Show after having recently announced that he wants to build battery electric cars in Europe.
- Its range in China is very wide, from the B-segment small car (Seagull) to the D and E-segment large SUVs. In Europe, its current range consists of the Atto 3 (C-segment SUV), sedan Han (E-segment) and the large Tang SUV (E-segment), but the carmaker will also import the Dolphin (C-segment sedan) and the Seagull (B-segment sedan), always with an advantage on the selling price compared to production European, around 10,000 to 15,000 euros depending on the model.
- BYD only sold 3,000 cars in Europe in the first half of 2023, but the automaker is just getting started on this continent. In China, BYD sold 1,248,000 cars over the same period and it is obvious that with such power, the Chinese carmaker will find a way to quickly become one of the main Chinese sellers in Europe, especially if it materializes his desire to produce cars in Europe.
- There is indeed a market in Europe for battery electric cars sold at prices between 15,000 and 30,000 euros, the average price of an electric car being rather between 40,000 and 50,000 euros. A Volkswagen ID4 is worth between 45,000 and 50,000 euros, a Tesla Model 3 is worth between 42,000 and 50,000 euros.
2023 Munich Motor Show - Inovev forecasts 75,000 units per year of the new Smart #3
- 说明
2023 Munich Motor Show - Inovev forecasts 75,000 units per year of the new Smart #3
- Smart (formerly subsidiary of Mercedes and now of the Mercedes-Geely 50-50 joint venture) has started producing in China (Ningbo) at Geely the new Smart #1 which is a battery electric four-door B-segment sedan of 4.27 m long, very different therefore from the battery electric Smart Fortwotwo-door A-segment of 2.70 m long which nevertheless continues to be produced in France (Hambach) until April 2024. As for the battery electric Smart Forfour four 3.50m long A-segment doors, it ceased production in 2022, the Smart #1 can be considered as its replacement.
- At the 2023 Munich Motor Show, Smart will be present and will unveil its new #3, 4.44 m long, which places it in the C-segment. This model produced in China will undoubtedly be more suitable for the Chinese market, which prefers C and B-segment cars. On the other hand, in Europe, the B-segment is still very much in demand and competition is fierce in the C-segment, especially since the price of the Smart #3 should be quite high as the #1 fluctuates between 40,000 and 45,000 euros depending on the version. It will be necessary to count on prices between 45,000 and 50,000 euros in the best case. However, a Volkswagen ID4 is worth between 45,000 and 50,000 euros, and a Tesla Model 3 of the upper segment (D-segment) is worth between 42,000 and 50,000 euros. A Renault Megane E-Tech is priced at 38,000 euros in its basic version. As for Chinese carmakers, an MG 4 is worth 30,000 euros in its basic version.
- The mission of the Smart #3 will be to relaunch the brand's production, which fell to 43,000 units in 2022, compared to 145,000 in 2016 and 123,000 in 2019. Inovev forecasts 75,000 units per year of the new Smart #3 produced in China.
