Update on BYD electric bus factories around the world (excluding China)
The Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles BYD has announced in recent years the construction of electric bus factories in several countries outside China. Inovev takes stock of the current situation:

§ Hungary: factory in the north of the country producing 400 electric buses per year
§ USA: factory in California (Lancaster) producing 300 electric buses per year
§ Canada: Ontario plant to open in 2018 to produce electric buses and electric trucks
§ France: plant under construction in Allonne (Hauts de France) which will produce 200 electric buses per year from summer 2018

In total, the production of BYD electric buses will be around a thousand units a year, excluding China, and the desire of the OEM is now to expand these operations to the production of electric trucks, which could complement the manufacture of electric buses in the years 2020-2025.

This strategy is similar to that of Tesla, which is preparing for the launch of an electric truck in 2020, while traditional manufacturers of thermal engine trucks are starting to take an interest in this type of engine; however to date there has been no major launch of this type of product.

BYD ‘s further ambition is to  invest the electric taxi  world market.

Inovev expects the Subaru Impreza to reach 200,000 sales in 2018
The smallest of the Japanese manufacturers, Subaru, begins marketing in Europe its new Impreza (C segment sedan) already marketed since the beginning of 2017 in Japan and North America. In China, Subaru is not present and must therefore forgo the volumes of the world's largest market. In Europe, sales of Subaru remain weak, notably because of a weak sales network, and the new Impreza will certainly have difficulty competing with the long established  incumbent European models. Its competitors will be Asian C-segment sedans, such as the Mazda 3, Toyota Auris, Nissan Pulsar, Honda Civic, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee'd.

In 2017, Subaru decided to manufacture the Impreza not only in Japan but also in the United States for the North American market. This decision boosted the Impreza's worldwide production, which rose from 80,000 in 2016 to 180,000 in 2017, a figure close to the record set in 2012. The Impreza has found its place in the North American market, competing with the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra who are among the top ten PC.

The Subaru Impreza is equipped with a gasoline engine of 1600cc developing 114hp and packaged flat, as in the other Subaru models. The length of the model reaches 4.46m i.e.1cm less than the Mazda 3 and 6cm less than the Honda Civic. According to Inovev, the Subaru Impreza should reach 200,000 sales in 2018.

PSA group begins marketing the DS 7 Crossback
The PSA Group begins the European commercialization of the DS 7 Crossback, which is a D segment SUV competing with Renault Koleos, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, but also Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. The DS 7 Crossback is the first model launched since the separation of the Citroën and DS brands in 2014. It will be followed by DS 3 Crossback in 2019 and DS 4 Crossback in 2021, two SUVs of different size.

However, the DS brand should not become a brand made up only of SUVs. While SUVs now account for a quarter of global sales and are still growing, DS needs more diversity to attract more customers and expand its sales potential.

The DS 7 Crossback is designed on the EMP2 platform, shared with the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. Its length is 4.58m, 8cm less than the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Mitsubishi Outlander, Peugeot 5008 or the D segment Renault Koleos. It is however 13cm longer than the Peugeot 3008 or the  C segment Renault Kadjar.

The DS 7 Crossback is manufactured in Mulhouse (France) for the European market, and will be manufactured in Shenzhen (China) in 2018 for the Chinese market. It will be competing with the Citroën C5 Aircross on the Chinese market. Inovev expects 15,000 sales in 2018, 25,000 in 2019, 30,000 in 2020 and 35,000 in 2021.

BYD to set up an assembly plant in Morocco
The Chinese manufacturer BYD, specialized in the design and marketing of electric cars (it is one of the  world’s first three manufacturers of electric cars), announced that it was going to build an assembly plant for this type of vehicle in Morocco, near Tangiers. After Renault (starting in 2012) and PSA (starting in 2018), BYD is the third car manufacturer to set up production in this country. BYD's plant is expected to start up in 2020 and commercialize its electric cars on both the European and African markets. BYD preferred this option rather than exporting its models from China.

BYD is an electric car pioneer, having marketed its first model in 2008 and will sell nearly 100,000 cars of this type in 2017, which is 13% of the global market share of 100% electric cars and 30% share Chinese market 100% electric cars. In the European market, where BYD is currently absent, it will probably take several years for the brand to become known and sell its models in number, especially as European manufacturers will launch a multitude of new electric models in the world in years 2020-2025.

The best niche for BYD to experience relative success here would be to occupy the low cost category of the 100% electric car market, which would explain the choice of a production site with low labor costs.

Renault begins marketing the Alpine A110
Alpine was a French brand of sports cars, whose models were manufactured in Dieppe (Normandy) between 1955 and 1995. The peak of production was reached in 1972 with a volume of 1,481 cars produced in the year. In total, 26,841 cars were manufactured in this plant over a period of 40 years.

At the end of 2017, the Renault group will launch the new Alpine A110 coupe, which perpetuates the style of the Alpine coupes of the 60s and 70s. This C-segment coupe, manufactured at Dieppe's historic Alpine site, at around 5,000 units per year, is the first new model of the brand that disappeared in 1995 and was resurrected this year.

It will try to capture some of the customers of sports coupes like the Porsche Cayman, Toyota GT86, Nissan 370Z or Subaru BRZ. If the success of this coupe is confirmed, Alpine could become the Premium brand of Renault, as Infiniti is for Nissan, and other products could  then be added. There is talk of a SUV based on the coupe and even a four-door sedan. Alpine could eventually offer a range like that of Porsche, but it would probably take about ten years to do so.

The Alpine Coupe A110 is equipped with a turbo petrol engine of 1800cc developing 250hp. Its weight is limited to 1,100 kg thanks to the use of aluminum for its structure and bodywork. Its length is 4.18m, its width is 1.80m.
