Ford is considering removing Fiesta, Fusion, and Taurus from the US market
- The Ford group plans to eliminate its Fiesta (segment B), Fusion (D segment) and Taurus (E segment) sedans from its US market offering. Only the Focus sedan (C segment) would remain to represent Ford in the US sedan market. And this model, it seems, would be imported from China and no longer manufactured in North America.
- Ford wants to follow the evolution of the US market where sales of sedans have been collapsing for several years in favor of SUVs. In 2017, sedans account for only 35% of registrations in the US market.
- However this volume still represents 6 million cars in 2017. In addition, this is happening at a time when the price of oil is at its lowest, which promotes sales of SUV, but this price can only increase in the future. The rise in the price of oil is inevitable in the long term, because the reserves will gradually become scarce.
- Finally, abandoning the sedan segment to the advantage of SUVs will leave the field open to Japanese and Korean manufacturers, who will become even stronger in this market. They already have seven cars in the top ten US PC, including in the first six places. Ford’s abandon could aggravate this situation and put eight or nine Asian cars in the top ten. FCA has already discontinued its Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart, and GM is also considering reducing the range of its sedans. This general retreat of US automakers demonstrates their determination to abandon declining segments.

Fiat inexplicably prolongs Punto career in Europe

Fiat inexplicably prolongs Punto career in Europe
- The current generation of the Fiat Punto was born in 2005, on a common GM-Fiat platform, the same as for the Opel Corsa which was launched in 2006 and which was replaced in 2014.
- Generally, the life cycle of a European B-segment model is 7 to 8 years on average (the Volkswagen Polo was launched in 2009 and was renewed in 2017, the Peugeot 208 was launched in 2011 and will be renewed in 2019, the current Renault Clio was launched in 2012 and will be renewed in 2019). But the Fiat Punto will begin its 13th year in 2018 ...
- From 450,000 sales recorded in Europe in 2006, the Fiat Punto fell to 300,000 sales in 2009, then 150,000 sales in 2012 and 50,000 sales only in 2017.
- Rather than replace it with a B-segment sedan, the FCA group let the Punto die slowly and preferred to launch the 500L minivan in 2012 and then the 500X mini-SUV in 2014, whose dimensions and interior space are close to those of the Punto, but meaning that FCA group has no model to compete with the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Opel Corsa, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3.. The Italian manufacturer seems to be content with his Panda and 500 in the A segment and his Tipo in the C segment. One may wonder if FCA really wants to replace the B-segment Punto as announced a few years ago, because this replacement seems to be constantly postponed.

The range of European SUVs on 1 January 2018
- 说明
The range of European SUVs on 1 January 2018
- Inovev has recorded the number of different SUVs marketed in Europe as of January 1, 2018. Inovev only selected B, C, D and E segment SUVs, as A and F segment SUVs accounting for only a fraction of SUV sales in Europe.
- A total of 78 SUVs are on the European market and 15 are in preparation. Therefore close to 100 SUV will be marketed in Europe in 2019 if we include those As (Suzuki) and F (Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maserati, Lamborghini) segments.
- Of the 78 SUVs currently offered on the European market, 18 SUVs are B segment (plus 4 in preparation), 25 are C segment (plus 4 in preparation), 22 are D segment (plus 4 in preparation) and 13 are E segment (plus 3 in preparation). C and D segment SUVs will therefore remain more numerous in the coming years. They account for 57% of SUV sales in 2017.
- Of the 78 SUVs currently offered on the European market, 29 SUVs are marketed by Premium brands ( plus more than 10 in preparation) while general manufacturers market 49 (plus 5 in preparation). Premium manufacturers will therefore further strengthen their SUV range more than will general manufacturers.
- In 2017, SUV sales accounted for 30% of the European VP market, up from 26% in 2016. The many SUVs in preparation show that this sales growth is expected to continue over the next few years.

Inovev forecasts 250,000 to 300,000 sales/year for the new VW Jetta

Inovev forecasts 250,000 to 300,000 sales/year for the new VW Jetta
- Volkswagen unveiled the new generation of the Jetta sedan, which was originally a notchback version of the Hatchback Golf, but which gradually gained its independence in the 2000s with a body of its own. The previous version of the Jetta dates from 2010. The new generation introduced at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is larger and for the first time features three side windows. It is similar in style and size to the American Volkswagen Passat which is manufactured in Chattanooga, and is based on the MQB platform.
- The VW Jetta is traditionally presented in Detroit because the two main markets for this sedan are the United States and Mexico (where it is produced). We do not include here the VW Jetta made in China, because this model has its own life cycle, its own body, and it is only available on the Chinese market.
- As for the Jetta made in Mexico (Puebla), its replacement is taking place at a time when it has been declining for several years in its two main markets, the United States and Mexico. As for exports to the European market, we see that they have gradually fallen to zero in 2017. The new Jetta will not be marketed in Europe, given the failure of this model on this market, customers preferring to choose the Golf (the top selling model in Europe) or even the Passat. Inovev expects between 250,000 and 300,000 sales for the Jetta produced in Mexico.

FCA stops production of Fiat models in China and India
- 说明
FCA stops production of Fiat models in China and India
- The Fiat brand has not been successful on the world's largest car market (China), nor on the fourth (India). As a result, the FCA Group has decided to stop the production of Fiat models in these two countries and focus its efforts on developing the production of Jeep models, a brand that benefits from the global enthusiasm for SUVs.
- Production of Fiat models (Viaggio, Ottimo) reached a peak of 70,000 units in China in 2014, all sold locally, then sales collapsed as of 2015.
- In India, production of Fiat models (Punto, Linea) reached a peak of 25,000 units in 2009, all sold locally, then sales declined constantly from 2011.
- The production of Jeep models under FCA control (Renegade, Compass, Cherokee) started in China in 2015 and India in 2017, and the level achieved in China in 2017 is very satisfactory, since it already exceeds 200,000 units, or a figure equivalent to that of Peugeot, but reached in just two years.
- In India, it is still too early to judge the performance of the Jeep brand. Nevertheless, the discontinuation of production of Fiat models in China and India, in addition to the recent Fiat production stop in North America, shows the growing disinterest for the Fiat brand from customers and FCA Group management.
