The Top 20 of the European market in 2020
- The year 2020 marked by the coronavirus crisis caused a fall in the European car market but did not completely change the ranking of the best-selling cars in Europe. The Volkswagen Golf thus remains the best-selling car in Europe in 2020, with 285,984 units sold, representing a decline of -31.3%, which is much higher than the decline of the European market as a whole (-24.5%). The leader of the European market has probably suffered from competition of the Volkswagen ID3 which is in the same segment, while the T-Roc and Tiguan had already taken customers to the Golf in previous years. The Volkswagen risks losing its leadership position in 2021.
- The Renault Clio holds its second place, with 226,638 units sold in 2020, doing a little better than the market as a whole (-23.1%), but it is followed by the Peugeot 208 (191,859 sales; -12, 6%) and Opel Corsa (190,162 sales; -8.6%) which share many components and which do much better than the market as a whole. These two models could replace the Renault Clio in 2021.
- The Renault Captur (168,427 sales; -20.3%) gained two places compared to 2019. The Volkswagen Polo (162,836 sales; -34.1%) and Tiguan (161,572 sales; -34.2%) fell of three places compared to 2019, to sixth and seventh place.
- It should be noted that the Ford Focus now sells better than the Ford Fiesta (161,500 sales against 151,632) and that the Peugeot 2008 (149,871 sales; -7.2%) is the model among the Top 20 Europe which has the best sales evolution in 2020 compared to 2019, thanks to its new generation marketed from January 2020.
