Inovev forecasts 25,000 units per year of the new Mitsubishi ASX
The Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi, in which Nissan holds 34% of the capital and which has since been considered part of the Renault-Nissan group, decided three years ago to leave the European market because of too low sales recorded on this market. Then Mitsubishi backtracked a year ago and decided to stay on the European market by borrowing platforms and bodies from other brands in the Renault-Nissan group, in this case Renault and Nissan.

The first model responding to this strategy and unveiled this month is the Mitsubishi ASX, which succeeds the old ASX and takes up the platform and body of the Renault Captur. The carmaker hopes to sell 35,000 units per year in Europe, but this objective seems very optimistic. Instead, Inovev expects 25,000 annual sales.

Obviously, the Mitsubishi ASX version 2023 uses the engines of the Renault Captur from which it is derived, that is to say the 1.0 liter turbo petrol with 91 hp, the 1.3 liter HEV-Mild with 140 hp, the 1.6 liter HEV-Full of 145 hp and the 1.6 liter PHEV of 160 hp. It will therefore not be available in a battery electric version.

Compared to the old Mitsubishi ASX, the new one is 7 cm (4.23 m) shorter and 3 cm (1.80 m) wider. It is 1.54 m high compared to 1.62 m for the old ASX. The new Mitsubishi ASX, which will be produced at the Renault site in Valladolid alongside the Captur, will be marketed in Europe from March 2023.

A second Mitsubishi model is expected in 2023, based on the Renault Clio and succeeding the Mitsubishi Space Star.

Chevrolet wants to make its Equinox EV the best-selling BEV in the United States
Chevrolet exhibited at the 2022 Detroit Motor Show, openned from September 14 to 25, its new battery electric compact SUV called Equinox EV which joins the brand's range of BEVs such as the Silverado EV, the Blazer EV and the Bolt EV. Compared to the Blazer EV, the Equinox EV is more family-friendly and less powerful, and therefore less sporty. The designers wanted to create a vehicle with the least aggressive design possible, inspired by the design of American cars of the 60s.

Based on the Ultium platform, the Chevrolet Equinox EV will be marketed with a choice of two batteries. Two versions are planned, the first with a 155 kW (210 hp) electric motor coupled to a 60 kWh battery and the second with a 213 kW (290 hp) electric motor coupled to an 80 kWh battery. The range reaches 400 km and 480 km respectively. With all-wheel drive, the range drops to 450 km.

The prices of the Equinox EV which will be marketed from the summer of 2023 have been communicated: from 35,000 dollars to 39,000 dollars depending on the version, i.e. a price between the Nissan Leaf (30,000 dollars ), Chevrolet Bolt EV ($32,500), Mini Electric ($35,000) and the Volkswagen ID4 ($39,000), Hyundai Ioniq 5 ($41,000), Kia EV6 ($43,000). In fact, the Equinox EV is priced the same as a Hyundai Kona Electric, which is extremely competitive.

Chevrolet wants to make the Equinox EV the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States, supplanting the Tesla Model Y SUV. It will be assembled at the Ramos Arizpe site in Mexico, alongside the combustion-powered Equinox. It will be offered in Europe but with a length that reaches 4.84 m, it will not be part of the compact models on this market, unlike the USA.

BYD could become the first Chinese automaker
The Chinese group BYD has made a spectacular breakthrough in 2021 and 2022, in terms of sales and production, benefiting in particular from the strong growth in sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) on the Chinese market.

BYD has not only become the world's leading carmaker of plug-in hybrid vehicles and the world's second largest carmaker of battery electric vehicles (behind Tesla), but has overtaken the second independent Chinese carmaker (Changan) and is getting closer and closer to the first Chinese carmaker (Geely). 2022 will end with BYD's production volume close to 1.5 million vehicles, compared to 1.2 million for Changan and 2.0 million for Geely.

But if we take into account the current momentum of BYD, this carmaker could overtake Geely (which is stagnating at the global level) in 2023 or 2024, and thus become in volume the first domestic Chinese carmaker (not linked with a foreign carmaker).

Geely is counting on the new electric Smart to boost its sales and remain the first carmaker not linked with a foreign carmaker.
The BYD range now includes 21 different models, the 5 most popular of which represent 63% of its total sales. Sedans represent 54% of its sales, SUVs 45% and MPVs 1%.

By segment, BYD mainly sells upper mid-range models, since 59% of its sales are made up of D-segment models, ahead of E-segment models (15%), C-segment models (13%) and B (13%).

Inovev forecasts 100,000 then 200,000 units per year of the Toyota BZ3
Toyota, which we learn that its plant in Saint Petersburg in Russia which had stopped production in March 2022 (following the Ukraine-Russia conflict) will be definitively closed from  01. October 2022, has announced the launch of a new battery electric vehicle, the BZ3 sedan, available on the European, American, Chinese and Japanese markets. This sedan is the second battery electric model launched by the Japanese brand after the SUV called BZ4X.

Toyota had been the pioneer in terms of hybrid motorization (from 1997) with the Prius, and had become - by far - the first carmaker of hybrid vehicles in the world, but recently the carmaker decided to change its strategy and to diversify its offer in the market of battery electric vehicles.

The new Toyota BZ3 is part of this policy which has programmed seven new battery electric models launched by the Japanese brand between 2022 and 2025. The letters BZ stand for "Beyond Zero", a term which embodies the strategy put forward by Toyota for its electric vehicles. The objective goes beyond zero emissions by integrating all the other qualities of an electric vehicle.

The BZ3 sedan, which is based on the TNGA platform, is 4.73 m long, a length between a Corolla (4.37 m) and a Camry (4.89 m). Its design takes up the style of the recent Crown unveiled a few weeks ago. Two engines will be available, one developing 132 kW (180 hp) and the other 177 kW (240 hp). The battery capacity will be identical to that of the BZ4X, namely 71.5 kWh and a comparable autonomy, i.e. 450 km according to the WLTP cycle. Inovev forecasts 100,000 BZ3 sales per year in the short term, then 200,000 per year in the medium term and 300,000 per year in the longer term.

Mahindra wants to go electric
The Indian carmaker Mahindra has decided to launch the production of battery electric vehicles (BEV), like many Chinese, European and American carmakers. It is actively looking for investors who could help it launch a range of electric vehicles by 2023-2024. Mahindra thinks the Indian market (it sells practically only in India) is now ready for a transition to electric.

Mahindra plans to launch five battery electric SUVs in different segments over the next few years which, according to him, should represent a third of its total sales in 2027. Remember that Mahindra does not offer sedans because it is traditionally specialized in the SUV category. A first electric model could be launched as early as January 2023. Mahindra will thus be the second Indian carmaker to market electric vehicles after Tata Motors, its rival which dominates the emerging electric car market in India.

Yet in 2021, BEVs accounted for just 1% of the Indian market, or 30,000 units out of 3 million vehicles. But the Indian government wants to increase this percentage to 30% of the market in 2030 and offers carmakers significant aid to push them to design and produce electric vehicles locally. Mahindra has already approached Volkswagen to buy electric motors and batteries from it, and joint model projects are being considered.

The American carmaker Fisker is starting to sell its Ocean electric SUV in India and plans to produce locally, while Tesla has decided to abandon its export plans to India due to high customs barriers.
