The future 100% electric Alpine coupé will be manufactured in England at Lotus

The future 100% electric Alpine coupé will be manufactured in England at Lotus
- Among the four novelties of the Alpine brand planned for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, the future coupé with 100% electric motor launched in 2026 which will succeed the current A110 will be produced abroad, in Great Britain, at Lotus.
- Indeed, the British manufacturer was asked for the joint design of the future Alpine coupé, the latter having to use a Lotus platform specially adapted to sports driving. This association between Lotus (part of the Geely group) and Alpine (part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group) makes it possible to reduce and pool production costs for a family of models which will be dedicated to a low volume of sales.
- The Alpine A110 coupé launched in 2017 has thus sold a total of 12,000 copies in four years, or 3,000 per year on average. It will therefore be replaced in 2026 by the new 100% electric coupé designed in partnership with Lotus. This model will be preceded by the launch of the Megane Alpine in 2023 (with 100% electric motorization), the R5 Alpine in 2024 (with 100% electric motorization) and the Alpine crossover in 2025 (with 100% electric motorization).
- The association between Lotus and Alpine is part of a vast more global association plan between the Chinese group Geely and the Franco-Japanese group Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi which plans to reorient the Renault brand towards 100% electric Premium models in China and Korea, thanks to the supply of engines and platforms from the Geely group, more specifically from Volvo Cars (CMA platform).

New automakers suspend production in Russia

New automakers suspend production in Russia
- Manufacturers BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai-Kia, Mazda and Mitsubishi have announced that they will suspend production in Russia, as have Stellantis, Renault and Volkswagen. Toyota has decided for its part to definitively cease automobile production in Russia. Nissan has not yet made a decision on this.
- In addition, Honda, Volvo, GM, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston-Martin and Porsche that do not produce in China have decided to suspend the sale of vehicles on the Russian market.
- The Hyundai-Kia group has become a major producer in Russia for about ten years. In 2021, the Korean group manufactured 400,000 vehicles there, i.e. 30% of all automotive production in Russia, as much as the Renault group (300,000 Lada + 100,000 Renault). If Hyundai-Kia decided to leave Russia, it would cause immense damage to the Russian automobile industry which could induce Chinese manufacturers to take its place. But Russia representing only 6% of the Korean group's production and sales worldwide, this would cause relatively little damage to Hyundai-Kia.
- Toyota is more modest since it represents only 6% of Russian production in 2021, but has been progressing every year for the past ten years. Toyota produces less than 100,000 vehicles in Russia (80,000 units in 2021).
- Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes and BMW together produce only 80,000 vehicles in 2021, or about 20,000 units each. If these manufacturers left Russia, the damage caused by this departure would be very minimal.

- Note that for the first time, the Toyota group becomes the leader of the US market in 2021, ahead of GM, Ford and Chrysler (Stellantis). The old "Big Three" now occupy only 40% of the US market, the fourth American manufacturer (Tesla) not exceeding 2% of this market. The Japanese occupy 35% of the US market, the Koreans 10% and the Europeans 10%.
- The first three places are occupied by Ford F-Series (-7.8%), Dodge Ram (+1.0%) and Chevrolet Silverado (-11.4%) pickups.
- Behind, two SUVs occupy 4th and 5th places, these are the Toyota RAV4 (-5.3%) and Honda CRV (+8.3%). The first sedan occupies 6th place, it is the Toyota Camry (+6.6%) which is ahead of the Honda Civic (10th), Toyota Corolla (13th) and Honda Accord (16th). The Camry supplants the SUVs Nissan Rogue (7th), Jeep Grand Cherokee (8th) and Toyota Highlander (9th). This is ahead of its competitor the Ford Explorer (14th). Tesla manages to place a model in the Top 25, it is the Model Y located in 17th position.
- SUVs accounted for 53% of the US car market in 2021, and the top 25 accounted for 16. Sedans accounted for 24% of passenger car sales in the USA in 2021, and the top 25 accounted for 4. Note that we does not count any car from GM, Ford or Chrysler among these 4 sedans, the Big Three having decided to put an end to the marketing of their sedans. Finally, pick-ups represented 19% of the US market in 2021, and the top 25 has 5, including 3 on the podium.

The top 25 best-selling models in Europe in 2021
- The European market reached 11,762,568 passenger cars in 2021, compared to 11,951,813 in 2020, which corresponds to a decrease of 1.6% year-on-year. Compared to 2019, the drop reached 25.5%.
- The ranking of the top 25 sales changed substantially last year. Admittedly, the Volkswagen Golf remains the European market leader, but is closely followed by the Peugeot 208. The Golf lost 32% of its sales compared to 2020 while the Peugeot 208 kept practically the same sales volume (-0.3%) while supplanting its main competitor the Renault Clio. The Peugeot 2008, which is progressing strongly (+25.5%), goes from 13th to 3rd place. In particular, it is ahead of its main competitor, the Renault Captur, which is in 10th position. This is down 10.3% compared to 2020, which prompted the manufacturer to offer a non-rechargeable hybrid engine, as on the Clio. The Renault Clio (-19.2%) fell from second to fourth place, now closely followed by the Dacia Sandero which increased by 19.9%, from 12th to 5th place. The Volkswagen T-Roc (+16.7%) rose from 14th to 6th place, driven by strong sales growth at the expense of the Volkswagen Golf. This is followed by the Opel Corsa (-8.9%), the Toyota Yaris (+6.2%) and the Fiat 500 (+54.6%) which is growing strongly thanks to its 100% electric version which represents almost a sale on three. These ten best-selling cars in Europe represent 15% of the global market.
- SUVs accounted for 47% of passenger car sales in Europe in 2021, and the top 25 has 10. Sedans accounted for 49% of passenger car sales in Europe in 2021, and the top 25 has 15.

The top 25 best-selling models in China in 2021
- The Chinese market reached 26,274,820 passenger cars in 2021, compared to 25,309,069 in 2020, corresponding to a 3.8% increase year-on-year. Compared to 2019, the increase reached 2.0% but a decrease of 6.4% compared to 2018.
- Even though the Volkswagen Group is still the sales leader in the Chinese market in 2021, the best-selling model is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV which has made a spectacular breakthrough since its launch in 2020. This 100% electric model of 2.90 m long sold nearly 430,000 units last year, an increase of 134% compared to 2020. This model, which is the only segment A among the Chinese top 25, is more of a vehicle for the city, while the other 24 models in the top 25 are more targeted city-road.
- The Volkswagen Lavida is in second position in the top 25 (-6.2%) and is ahead of the Toyota Corolla (4th), Tesla Model 3 (5th), Buick Excelle GT (7th), Nissan Sylphy (9th) and Nissan Bluebird sedans (10th). The Volkswagen Bora and Sagitar suffered a strong fall in 2021.
- The Great Wall Haval H6 (3rd) and Changan CS75 (6th) are the best-selling SUVs in China. They supplant the Wuling Hongguang MPV (8th) which remains a remnant of the traditional (but declining) MPV market. Only a very low price allows this rather old model to still sell more than 250,000 units in 2021.
- SUVs accounted for 47% of the Chinese car market in 2021, more than sedans which accounted for only 45% of sales. There are 15 sedans, 9 SUVs and 1 minivan in the top 25 of 2021.
