Kia unveils the new generation of the Rio (B segment)
- Launched in September 2011, the current generation of the B segment sedan Kia Rio disappears at the end of 2016, closely following the five-year life cycle adopted recently by the Hyundai-Kia Group for its most sold models.
- The new Kia Rio, designed in a more European style than the current model, was unveiled this week and will be presented at the next Paris Motor Show in October.
- Still produced in South Korea to be sold on international markets including Europe, the new Rio shares its platform with the Hyundai I20 which is manufactured in Turkey. The new Kia Rio will be available with the same engines as the Hyundai i20: four petrol engines (3-cylinder turbo 1.0l 100hp and 120hp, 4-cylinder 1.3l 85hp and 100hp) and two diesel engines (3-cylinder 1.1l 75 hp and 4-cylinder 1.4l 90hp).
- The new Kia Rio tackles general European B segment sedans like the VW Polo, Ford Fiesta, Opel Corsa, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, Citroen C3, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, Fiat Punto and Hyundai i20 ....
- The sedan B segment represents 32% of the European market in 2015, more than the sedan C segment (20%) and more than all SUVs (20%). This is the first European segment in terms of sales volume.
- Inovev forecasts a production of 250,000 Kia Rio a year in Korea, with 75,000 sales in Europe.

Jaguar Land Rover plans to produce two models on the future Slovak site of Nitra
- The British group Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of the Indian group Tata Motors, has started the construction of its fourth plant in Europe, located this time in Slovakia (Nitra).
- The new plant, which will complement the manufacturing presence of the carmaker in the United Kingdom (490 000 vehicles per year capacity in 2016, 580 000 vehicles in 2017), should be operational in 2018, with an initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year, which could be doubled in the medium term.
- This plant will be the fourth automotive plant in Slovakia, after those of Bratislava (Volkswagen Group), Trnava (PSA group) and Zilina (Hyundai-Kia Group), enabling the country to exceed for the first time the million vehicles per year capacity (1.15 million). The total of capacities of Czech Republic (1.55 million) and Slovakia (1.15 million) - that once formed Czechoslovakia - will reach in 2018 the automotive capacity of France (2.7 million units).
- The Jaguar Land Rover group has not communicated the list of models that will be manufactured in Nitra from 2018.
But given the fact that these models will be two in number (according to the carmaker) and it would be logical that these models are the entry-level vehicles (low labour cost), Inovev thinks it would be the future Defender land Rover and Jaguar E-Pace planned for this date in the carmaker’s Product Plan.

FCA and BAIC could create a JV in China

FCA and BAIC could create a JV in China
- The Italian carmaker Fiat was one of the first carmakers to operate in China, from the late 90s.
The JV, established with the Chinese carmaker Nanjing, manufactured and sold locally the Fiat Palio, Siena, Doblo, Linea and Perla (30 000 to 35 000 units per year). The agreement between Fiat and Nanjing however ceased in 2006, as Fiat was not satisfied with the business results of the joint venture.

The agreement between Fiat and Nanjing however ceased in 2006, as Fiat was not satisfied with the business results of the joint venture.
- Fiat was no longer represented in China, while Nanjing took over production and sales of models of the MG brand,
a former branch of Rover Group. Nanjing was then integrated into the SAIC group that produced and then sold models of the Roewe brand, also a former branch of Rover Group. The two former branches of Rover Group were thus united in one entity.

- In 2012, a year after taking over the Chrysler Group, Fiat decided to establish in China a second time, this time with another Chinese partner: GAC (Guangzhou Automobile Corporation). The JV manufactured and sold the Fiat Viaggio and Ottimo as well as Cherokee and Jeep Renegade. Trade performance of the new joint venture, however, remained unsatisfactory. Four years after the creation of the JV, the FCA group lagged at the 24th place of the carmakers in the Chinese market (88,000 sales over 8 months 2016, 0 6% of the market).
- Consequently the FCA group got is in talks with BAIC with the objective to establish a new JV. BAIC has indeed more assets than GAC. With this new JV, FCA hopes to triple its sales in the Chinese market.
