Malaysian production evolves sporadically since 2005
- Since 2005, the Malaysian automobile production has evolved in spurts (successive increases and decreases). Yet in 2014, it reached a high point compared to previous years, at 595 000 units (against 601 000 in 2013), representing a decline of only 1% compared to 2013.
- Malaysian production is hardly exported and is mostly sold locally. However, they are currently experiencing a slight change in leadership: the Malaysian Proton and Perodua groups represented 58% of the country's production in 2005 and now represent no more than 51% in 2014.
- Indeed, many foreign manufacturers are located in Malaysia (including Toyota and Honda), responding to growing demand of in between 500 000 to 650 000 vehicles per year, and an even greater potential in the medium and long term (750 000 to 900 000 units per year). In 2014, it sold 666 000 vehicles in Malaysia (against 650 000 in 2013), one hundred thousand of which came from abroad (mainly from South East Asia).
- The two local groups Perodua and Proton have failed to enter into alliances with foreign manufacturers. The draft agreement between Proton (established in 1983) and Volkswagen failed and for Perodua (established in 1994), Daihatsu holds 20% of its capital.
