Overview of the Plants of Africa

The launch of the Renault Plant in Algeria (Near Oran) in November 2014 makes for the perfect moment to discuss plants currently established on the African continent. The number of plants has reached 15 (7 of which are CKD) and their production levels will 750 000 in 2014. The larger amount of African vehicle production is set in South Africa and contains 7 plants in total accounting for 500 000 vehicles each year of which 300 000 are sold locally and 200 000 are sold outside of the country. There are 8 different carmakers present in South Africa (see graph here under).

The second largest producing country in this continent is Morocco with 264 000 units produced. This is even more obvious since the launch of the Tanger plant (Renault) in 2012, with a capacity increased from 170 000 to 340 000 vehicles per year in 2014 (198 000 units produced in 2014). The plant adds to the one already operating in the country, in Somaca. This plant is located in Casablanca (and produces Renault Kangoo and Dacia Logan) with a capacity of more than 100 000 vehicles per year (66 000 vehicles produced in 2014).

The third largest producer on African soil since November 2014 is Algeria, with a plant (Renault) which can produce up to 25 000 vehicles a year but with a capacity that will triple before the end of the decade.

Finally, there are five other assembly plants (CKD) one located in Egypt (Toyota), another in Nigeria (Nissan), a third in Kenya, a fourth in Tunisia and a fifth in Zimbabwe, which operates slowly. The most produced model in Africa in 2014 is the Dacia Sandero (97 000 units over 10 months).
