Ford launchs the new F-150 pickup

Ford introduces the new F-150 pick-up, a year after its main competitors launched their pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling model in the US for 32 years.

As the previous model, the new F-150 will be produced on the historic plant of River Rouge (Michigan), near Detroit, and also in the Kansas City (Missouri) plant, at the beginning of 2015. The two sites will together produce 700 000 units per year, mainly for the United States and Canada.

The new F-150 will be 350 kilos lighter through the use of an aluminum chassis and an EcoBoost petrol engine with smaller displacement but more powerful (V6 2.7 litres 325hp, V6 3.5 litres of 365hp and a V8 5 litres of 385 hp).

During the first 9 months of 2014, the previous Ford F-150 still keep its US market leadership place with 557 000 units sold, far ahead of the Chevrolet Silverado (382 000 units) and the Dodge Ram (320 000 units). It is to be noted that the longer versions Ford F-250 and F-350 will be launched in two years and will be produced in another plant, Louisville (Kentucky), with a production of 200 000 units per year.

Today, the Ford F-Series range represents the third of the Ford group's production in North America. Replacing these models is crucial for the US carmaker.
