1,000 Alpine A110 produced in Dieppe
The new Alpine A110 (which takes the name of the mythical model of the 60s) has passed the mark of 1,000 units  produced in May 2018, which means that current production is at 200 per month and it should soon to increase to 250 per month, which is in line with the objectives initially set by the manufacturer. Renault has indicated that it plans to produce 3,000  units of the Alpine A110 in 2018, on the site of Dieppe (France).

The model is expected to increase in production in 2019 (4,000 units  and in 2020 (5,000 units ). If these numbers are confirmed, we could expect a diversification of the Alpine range, in the same way as at Porsche, with the launch of a sedan and a SUV, built on the same platform and with the same engines  as the A110 coupe (currently, only a 1.8 turbo gasoline engine is available).

Similarly, Porsche moved from the 911 coupe, whose origins also date back to the 1960s, to launch the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne and Macan SUVs much later.

The Alpine brand could become the Premium brand of the Renault group, such as DS for PSA or Infiniti for Nissan. Alpine could  thus perpetrate the tradition of the former French luxury brands that disappeared in the 50s,  such as Delage, Delahaye, Hotchkiss, Salmson and Talbot.

100% Chinese brands see their market share increase in China

In the Chinese passenger car market, foreign carmakers who manufacture in China as part of joint ventures (JV) with local manufacturers/assemblers still account for two thirds of total registrations, as was the case a decade ago.

It should, however, be noted that these foreign manufacturers had already reached as much as 72% of the market for passenger vehicles in 2014, thanks to their sedans, but also to some extent their SUVs. In the same year, the share of 100% Chinese manufacturers in the passenger vehicle market fell to 28%, even though the Chinese government had set them a target to gain a 40% share of the market.

It was the strong growth in sales of SUVs offered by Chinese 100% manufacturers which allowed these manufacturers to increase their market share substantially in 2015 and 2016 (1st quarter). Sales of electric cars also contributed modestly to this growth. From 28% in 2014, the market share of 100% Chinese manufacturers grew to 32% in 2015, and to 36% in the first quarter of 2016, returning to 2006-2007 levels.

This trend shows no signs of decelerating over the course of the next few months, as around twenty new SUVs were unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show by 100% Chinese manufacturers.

Inovev believes that the latter could indeed reach the goal of a 40% share of the market from 2017.

11% of the vehicles produced in UK are sold in UK

Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain are the five largest markets (PC + LUV) in Europe, and except for Italy, these countries are also the largest producers. It is therefore interesting to analyse these countries and see what share of their production is sold on the local market and how much is imported. In a whole, which countries buy the most vehicles produced in their own country. Inovev has calculated this data and shares its first results hereunder.

Germany is the country that buys the most vehicles produced locally. Over total sales PC + LUV equivalent to 3 265 096 units, 60% imports (1 955 605 units) and 40% of vehicles were produced in Germany (1 309 491 units).

The UK is the one that buys fewer vehicles produced locally. Over total sales of PC + LUV accounting for 2 798 121 units, 89% were imports (2 482 734 units) and 11% of vehicles were produced in the United Kingdom (315 387 units).

In France, on total sales PC + LUV accounting for 2 166 275 units, 72% were imports (1 565 218 units) and 28% of vehicles were produced in France (601 057 units).

In Italy, over total sales PC + LUV accounting for 1 477 342 units, 85% were imports (1 262 992 units) and 15% of vehicles were produced in Italy (214 350 units).

In Spain, over total sales, PC+LUV accounting for 969 171 units, 78% were imports (753 988 units) and 22% of vehicles were produced in Spain (215 183 units).

1. African countries (Algeria: 149 760, Egypt 34 531, South Africa 19 265, Angola 9 570, Nigeria: 8 760)
2. South America (Chile 62 640, Peru: 37 174, Venezuela: 32 781, Colombia 31 309, Brazil 21 423, Uruguay: 16 017, Ecuador: 13 773)
3. Middle East countries (Iraq: 90 057, Iran 77 728, Saudi Arabia: 27 994)

2012 European production in the first nine manufacturers by country

The 2012 production breakdown by country in Europe of nine major manufacturers producing vehicles on the continent is very different from one manufacturer to another.

The three German manufacturers ( Volkswagen , BMW, Daimler ) produce most of their vehicles in Germany (55 %, 77 %, 83 % respectively), their country of origin.

PSA manufactures most of its vehicles in France (55%), its country of origin and Fiat -Chrysler most of its vehicles in Italy (50%), its country of origin.

The country of origin of the brand or group is therefore essential for these five aforementioned manufacturers.

American groups based in Europe (GM, Ford ) have a more balanced production breakdown, although Germany still plays a key role here (41 % and 46 % respectively).

The Renault- Nissan group shows the most balanced production breakdown by country, France (country of origin of the group) representing only 22 % of European production group.

The Hyundai-Kia group which has established more recently in Europe produces only in the central and eastern part of Europe (Turkey , Czech Republic, Slovakia).

2012 French market suffered from purchases anticipated over the period 2009-2012

The French market has benefited from scrapping schemes between 2009 and 2011, encouraging consumers to bring forward purchases. A phenomenon exacerbated by the deferral of vehicle purchases in 2008 due to the global financial crisis and its consequences.

Between 2000 and 2011, the market average was 2.1 million units, while sales reached 2.27 million units in 2009, 2.2 million  in 2010 and 2.17 million in 2011. The French market has accumulated over the past three years an additional volume of 360,000 cars compared to the average.

Sales volume in 2012 was 1.86 million units, 240,000 units less than the average of the last ten years. The year 2013 should theoretically be around 1.98 million units, i.e. showing  a decrease of 120 000 units compared to the average market.

The economic context associated with new patterns of consumption, however, may lower volume of French automobile market down to  1.8 million units per year in the years to come.

2013 Chinese production by province or autonomous region

Inovev has recently compiled vehicle production  data (PC + LCV) in China for 2013 (the year 2014 is being finalized), not only by make and by model but also by plant. We were able to cross-reference the data by province (or autonomous regions) and draw up relevant analyses.

Thus, the first observation is that in 2013 the autonomous city of Chongqing is the largest producing region of passenger cars found in China (1.86 million units), followed by Shanghai (1.85 million units) and the Hubei Province (1.6 million units).

In Chongqing, Ford is the first manufacturer in the city with more than a third of local production (680 000 units), spread over three sites (with a total capacity of 950 000 units). At Shanghai, the VW group is the largest producer in the city, with three plants manufacture 1.08 million units (with an estimated 900 000 units production capacity). Finally, in the Hubei region it is the Nissan Xiangyang plant which produces the most vehicles (with 370 000 units), followed by the Honda plant in Wuhan (325 842 units).

Hyundai is the manufacturer which has the largest production capacity held on one site, namely Beijing (with 1 million units), ahead of VW in Shanghai (900 000 units) and Chery in Wuhu (900 000 units but used only at 50% of its capacity).

Finally, among joint-ventures, VW is the group that has the largest number of production sites (9 sites) ahead of GM (7 sites) and Toyota (5 sites). Among the 100% Chinese manufacturers, Geely has the largest number of sites (7 sites), ahead of Changan (6 sites) and Dongfeng (5 sites).

2013 ranking of models manufactured in the greatest number of plants

In order to market their vehicles worldwide, carmakers have the choice to either manufacture models in dedicated plants and export them, or they can manufacture them directly in the regions where they are sold (CBU or CKD). Which are the models whose production is the most scattered over the world?

By analysing the 15 vehicles that are produced in the greatest number of plant across the world, we can already note two trends: the strong presence of Japanese manufacturers and the lack of German manufacturers. Japanese manufacturers have a strong market share in Asia and America but also the Middle East, which leads them to establish their production sites locally. German manufacturers prefer to export their vehicles from Germany even for Chinese and American markets.

By model, the Toyota Corolla is the world's premier vehicle with a production spread over 8 plants in Japan, China, India, Turkey, the US, Canada and Brazil. The Honda CRV is also a world wide produced vehicle, since it is manufactured in 7 factories in Japan, China, India, the US, India and Mexico. It must be noted that Renault's entry-level model, the Logan, is the most global vehicle of the Renault-Nissan group, with production focused in developing countries (Brazil, Russia, India, Iran, Romania and Morocco).

Beyond the number of plants used to produce a vehicle, it is interesting to relate to production volumes. The ratio between the production volume / number of plants, shows that the Ford Focus is the model which has the highest volume (an average of 200 000).  Naturally these volumes are more driven by production in China, Germany and the US, than production in Russia and Argentina.

2013 Sales by body type

On the three largest global markets, China, the United States of America and the European Union, the face of the automobile market (sales by body type) has transformed itself and is very different today.

Indeed, if global sales are divided into five distinct types of bodies (1 / sedans (with trunks) and estates 2/ hatchbacks 3/ SUVs and crossovers 4/ MPV 5/ pick-ups), we can observe that sedans with trunks and estate vehicles are very well established in China (64% of sales in 2013) and in the USA (48% of sales), while they represent only 19% of the market in Europe.

In Europe, it is Hatchback that are the most present, with 51% of sales in 2013. Conversely, these hatchbacks represent only 12% of sales in China and only 3% in the USA.

SUVs (and crossovers) can see their market share progress throughout the past dozen years, representing 17% of their sales in Europe, 19% in China and 31% in the USA in 2013.

Victims of the success of SUVs, minivans have seen their market share decrease, representing only 13% in Europe, 5% in China and only 4% in the USA.

Finally, pick-up represent 14% in the U.S. while they are marginal in Europe and China.

2013 Worldwide production of the first 12 manufacturers

Inovev has listed the top 12 automotive groups based on their production volume (PC + LCV) worldwide in the first 10 months of 2013.

This ranking takes into account the Chinese production achieved for foreign manufacturers and not Chinese assemblers. For example, the production achieved by Shanghai-VW for Volkswagen has been accounted for Volkswagen and not for SAIC or that produced by Dongfeng-PSA for PSA is accounted for PSA and not for Dongfeng. The classification thus formed shows the dominance of the Toyota group ahead of the GM group, Volkswagen, Renault-Nissan and Hyundai-Kia, in the first five places.

One can note the presence of ten generalist manufacturers in the top ten and two premium manufacturers in 11th and 12th place (almost shoulder to shoulder).

By nationality, we note the presence of three Japanese automakers (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki), three German manufacturers (Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler), two American carmakers (GM, Ford), two French carmakers (Renault-Nissan PSA), a Korean carmaker (Hyundai-Kia) and an Italian carmaker (Fiat-Chrysler).

These twelve manufacturers account for 80% of the global car production in 2013.

2015 Automobile export in Thailand: Up 7% to 1.2 million units

Thailand's automobile export volume increased 7% in 2015 compared 2014 to 1.2 million units, reaching a record high for the fourth consecutive year. Export volume of passenger vehicles went up 11.4% to 460,000 units aided by rising exports of Eco Car-compliant models. Passenger pickup vehicles (PPV) rose 28.8% to 83,000 units. One-ton pickup trucks, which account for the bulk of exports, increased slightly, up 2.1% to 658,000 units.

Apart from Toyota and Ford all carmakers increased volume. Toyota decreased 11.5% to 377,000 units. The market in the Middle East shrank due to the falling price of crude oil, negatively affecting Hilux sales which account for some 80% of all exports to the region. Mitsubishi increased 7.5% to 290,000 units. The carmaker began exports of the new Triton in February 2015 and simultaneously increased the number of export destinations to 150  countries.

Honda went up 36.8% to 72,000 units thanks to rising exports of the HR-V to Australia and Mexico. Suzuki expanded 3.7-fold to 38,000 units. Strong performance is credited to increased number of export destinations. Suzuki launched exports of the Celerio to Europe in September 2014 and of the Ciaz to ASEAN in July 2015.

The Federation of Thai Industries forecast in early 2016 that export volume would increase as much as 3% to 1.25 million units in 2016; however, this figure was downwardly revised in April. Toyota set its annual target on par with the previous year's level at 370,000 units. The carmaker intends to counterbalance poor sales in the shrinking Middle East market by focusing more on Oceania, Europe and the US. Meanwhile, Mazda set its 2016 export target at 950,000 units, up 10%, and Suzuki at 51,000 units, up some 30%.
